The city looks magnificent and atmospheric. But that's not the only thing to see nearby. In 2925, a new city, Busan, opened 49 minutes' drive from Wuchen. It's a stylized version of the old days, and it's worth learning, too.

We got a free upgrade to a bigger room with a nicer view and owner was very friendly and nice. Highly recommended as it is only a 5 mins walk from West Gate.

What Is Wuzhen? A Journey into China's Enchanting Water Town

What Is Wuzhen? A Journey into China's Enchanting Water Town

Wuzhen is a breathtaking 1,300-year-old water town nestled in China's Zhejiang Province. Recognized as a National AAAAA Tourist Attraction and celebrated as one of China's Top 10 Charming Towns, this UNESCO World Cultural Heritage candidate is a true gem. Wander through its historic streets to discover a stunning collection of traditional Jiangnan architecture and enchanting canal systems that have stood the test of time.

Stroll along charming stone-paved streets, glide through serene canals on a traditional boat, and immerse yourself in the rich heritage of local crafts and tea culture. Wuzhen Water Town stands as a beloved gem among the ancient destinations of the Yangtze River Delta.

Where Is Wuzhen Located? A Look at Its Geography and Surroundings

Wuzhen is tucked away in the northern part of Tongxiang City, within the Jiaxing area of Zhejiang Province. Ideally situated in the heart of the Yangtze River Delta, it lies conveniently between the bustling cities of Shanghai and Hangzhou.

Many travelers often wonder if Wuzhen is part of Shanghai, but it’s actually a distinct destination! Administratively, Wuzhen is located in Zhejiang Province. It sits about 80 kilometers southwest of downtown Shanghai and 60 kilometers north of Hangzhou. The historic Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal flows along its northern edge, while charming, smaller canals wind their way through the heart of the town itself.

The river system divides the old town into four distinct sections: Dongzha (East Zone), Xizha (West Zone), Nanzha (South Zone), and Beizha (North Zone). While Nanzha and Beizha are primarily residential, Dongzha and Xizha are the two scenic zones open to visitors.

Wuzhen Opening Hours

  • Dongzha: 7:00 AM – 6:00 PM (summer), 7:00 AM – 5:30 PM (winter). Last entry is 30 minutes before closing.
  • Xizha: 9:00 AM – 10:00 PM. The lights stay on until late, with extended hours on weekends.

If you only have one day, the golden hours are the early morning, when mist blankets the canals (roughly 5:30–7:30 AM in summer, shifting to 7:00–8:00 AM in winter—a window only available to those staying overnight inside the West Scenic Area, or Xizha, which opens to day visitors around 9:00 AM), and the blue hour at dusk (roughly 5:00–6:30 PM in winter and 7:00–8:00 PM in summer, as the lanterns flicker on against the fading light)—that magical time when the lanterns illuminate one by one against the darkening sky.

Try your best to steer clear of major Chinese public holidays—especially National Day (October 1–7) and Labor Day (May 1–5) (keep in mind that exact dates follow China's official holiday calendar and can shift from year to year)—as the town gets incredibly crowded. You'll always have a better experience visiting on weekdays rather than weekends.

Note: Opening hours, lantern-lighting times, and Chinese public holiday dates can shift from year to year—be sure to check the latest schedules on the official Wuzhen tourism site (ewuzhen.com / wuzhen.com.cn) before you head out on your adventure.

Xizha (West Scenic Zone): The Heart of Wuzhen Tourism

Xizha is the larger, more developed scenic area, which is why it’s a must-visit for most travelers exploring Wuzhen. Fully restored in 2007, it boasts nearly 400,000 square meters of Ming and Qing dynasty architecture, 72 ancient stone bridges, and nearly 10 kilometers of winding waterways.

Siza strikes a unique balance between historic preservation and modern comfort. While traditional buildings line the canal, step behind their charming facades to discover well-appointed hotels, cozy restaurants, inviting teahouses, bookstores, and vibrant cultural venues. It’s a destination thoughtfully designed for those looking to settle in and stay a while.

The undisputed highlight is the night. As the sun fades, thousands of red lanterns illuminate the canals and bridges, their reflections dancing on the calm water. Most day-trippers head out in the late afternoon, so staying overnight lets you experience the town in its most peaceful and atmospheric state—from the early morning mist on the water to the glow of lanterns after dark.

Xizha is also home to the Mu Xin Art Museum, Wuzhen Grand Theater, Zhaoming College, Bailian Tower, and Zhongqiao Bridge. Boat tours, art exhibitions, and canal-side dining are all part of the experience.

Dongzha (East Scenic Zone): A More Authentic, Local Experience

Dongzha, one of Wuzhen’s two main scenic areas, is steeped in history, compact in size, and refreshingly less commercialized. As the first section opened to visitors, it retains a more authentic, lived-in atmosphere. With many areas still home to local residents, Dongzha offers a genuine, unscripted experience that feels far less staged than Xizha.

Culture and history take center stage here. Dongzha is the proud home of Mao Dun's former residence—a tribute to China's first Minister of Culture and one of the 20th century's most influential literary figures. You'll also find a charming collection of small museums and studios to explore: the Ancient Bed Museum, showcasing beautifully ornate carved beds; the indigo dye workshop, where Wuzhen's iconic blue calico is crafted; plus the Leather Theater, the Coin Museum, and the Woodcut Museum.

You'll find traditional folk performances happening all day long, featuring everything from shadow puppets and flower drum operas to thrilling high-pole boat shows. Just a heads-up: the East Gate closes in the late afternoon, so there's no night viewing—be sure to plan your visit for the morning or early afternoon. Most travelers find that two to three hours is the perfect amount of time to soak it all in!

A Brief History of Wuzhen: 7,000 Years of Civilization

A Brief History of Wuzhen: 7,000 Years of Civilization

The story of human settlement in Wuzhen stretches back an incredible 7,000 years to prehistoric times. Archaeological discoveries reveal that Neolithic communities once called this place home, back when it was known as Wudun and Wushu. During the Spring and Autumn Period, this site sat right on the border between the Wu and Yue states, leading the Wu kingdom to construct defensive walls here.

The town truly began to take shape around 1,300 years ago during the Tang and Song dynasties. A bustling commercial street flourished along the ancient post road, while the local waterways transformed into vital transport routes. The name "zha"—meaning fence or gate—dates back to the Southern Song Dynasty, when wooden stockades were erected to defend against pirates. By the Ming and Qing dynasties, Wuzhen had reached the height of its economic prosperity. Hundreds of shops lined the canals, and the local silk and dye industries thrived, complemented by dozens of beautiful temples and ancestral halls that dotted the town.

Wuzhen officially received its name in 1950, with large-scale preservation and restoration efforts kicking off in the late 1990s. Dongzha was the first to open its doors, followed by Xizha in 2007. This meticulous restoration work, which utilizes traditional materials and time-honored methods, has even earned international heritage protection awards.

The Bridge Within a Bridge: Tongji and Renji Bridges

The "Bridge Within a Bridge" is Wuzhen's most photographed spot and one of its most iconic sights. It’s not just one bridge, but two—the east-west Tongji Bridge and the north-south Renji Bridge—that meet in a perfect right angle.

Standing under the arch of either bridge, you can look through and perfectly frame the other, creating the optical illusion of a bridge within a bridge. Tongji Bridge spans 28.4 meters with a single arch of 11.8 meters and has been rebuilt five times throughout history. Renji Bridge is 22.6 meters long. Together, they form the classic view that appears on nearly every Wuzhen travel poster.

Mao Dun's Former Residence and Museum

Mao Dun (born Shen Yanbing, 1896–1981) stands as one of modern China's most celebrated novelists and served as the nation's first Minister of Culture. Born and raised in Wuzhen, his childhood in this enchanting water town left an indelible mark on his writing, most notably in his acclaimed masterpiece, Midnight.

Step into his former residence in Dongzha, a beautifully preserved traditional courtyard house where he was born and spent his early years. The adjacent museum offers an intimate look at his life, showcasing his original manuscripts, personal belongings, and photographs that trace his remarkable literary journey. It’s a site of genuine historical significance and a must-visit for anyone with a passion for modern Chinese literature.

Mu Xin Art Museum: Where Ancient Town Charm Meets Contemporary Art

Perched right on the water in Xizha, the Mu Xin Art Museum is a stunning tribute to Mu Xin (1927–2011), the legendary poet, painter, and calligrapher who hailed from Wuzhen. With a design by a renowned Japanese architect, the museum itself is a masterpiece of contemporary style, creating a beautiful contrast against the backdrop of the ancient town.

Inside, you'll find a permanent collection showcasing Mu Xin's paintings, writings, and personal artifacts. The museum also hosts a rotating schedule of temporary exhibitions and cultural events. It has truly become a major cultural destination in its own right, drawing visitors who are passionate about art and literature. Please note that it is closed on Mondays.

Fanglu Pavilion: Where Tea Culture Comes to Life

Fanglu Pavilion—or the "Pavilion of Visits to Lu"—is Wuzhen's most iconic teahouse, deeply intertwined with the legend of Lu Yu, the Tang Dynasty tea scholar revered as the Patron Saint of Tea.

Legend has it that Lu Yu once accidentally consumed poisoned tea leaves while in the Wuzhen area. Fortunately, a local tea merchant named Lu Tong discovered him and saved his life. In gratitude, Lu Yu shared his profound expertise in tea cultivation and preparation. The teahouse was later christened "Fanglu" to honor this fateful meeting. Today, it remains a bustling teahouse where visitors can relax by the canal, sipping local tea while watching boats drift lazily past.

Art Wuzhen: Where Global Contemporary Art Meets Ancient Town Charm

Art Wuzhen, formally known as the Wuzhen International Contemporary Art Exhibition, is a recurring global art event that turns this ancient town into a sprawling, immersive gallery. Since its 2016 debut with the theme "Utopias and Heterotopias," it has showcased works by dozens of international artists across various venues, including the historic Xizha district and the repurposed North Silk Factory.

The exhibition seamlessly blends contemporary installations, video art, and sculptures with traditional buildings and industrial heritage sites, sparking a captivating dialogue between the past and the present. Held roughly every two to three years, Art Wuzhen has transformed the town into a vibrant cultural destination that goes far beyond its historical roots, standing proudly alongside the renowned Wuzhen Theatre Festival.

Be sure to stick around for the magical, lantern-lit evening before you head home. You can skip Dongzha entirely, or just catch a quick glimpse in the morning—it’ll be a whirlwind, but it’s definitely doable.

Two Days, One Night (Recommended)

This is your perfect Wuzhen itinerary.

  • Day 1: Arrive by midday. Spend your afternoon exploring Dongzha (it’ll take about 2–3 hours). Then, check into your hotel in Xizha and enjoy the rest of the day at your own pace—take a sunset boat ride, grab dinner by the canal, and wander the lantern-lit streets after dark.
  • Day 2: Rise with the sun to catch the canals in their quiet, misty morning glory before the crowds roll in. Spend your morning exploring the Mu Xin Art Museum and any other hidden gems in Xizha you didn't get to yesterday. Plan to head out by late morning or early afternoon.

Three Days, Two Nights (A Relaxed Pace)

With three days, you have the luxury of adding in some side trips! Spend two full days leisurely exploring both zones, then dedicate a half-day to Wucun (Wuzhen Village) for a taste of rural life, or mix things up with a day trip to Tongxiang or the nearby water town of Nanxun.

Combining with Other Destinations

Wuzhen pairs perfectly with a visit to Hangzhou (just 1 hour away by train), Suzhou (1 hour), or Shanghai (1.5 hours). Many travelers love including it as part of a larger Jiangnan water town tour, or as a delightful day trip or overnight escape to complement their Hangzhou or Shanghai itinerary.

It’s a convenient and much more budget-friendly option than staying inside the scenic area, though you will miss out on that magical early morning and late-night atmosphere.
  • South Zha Old Street area (¥100–200/night): You'll find budget-friendly options in this free, less commercialized southern part of town.

The hotel service was warm and attentive, and the local scenic spot is truly top-tier in the country! The fly in the ointment is that the room facilities are in dire need of an upgrade. For example, the sink is too shallow and the faucet is too low, making them very awkward to use. The bathroom window lacks a screen—leave it closed and it smells stuffy; open it and mosquitoes get in. The leather armchair has a sagging seat that hasn't been fixed. The bathroom is already tiny, yet they crammed in a large, useless bathtub. The shower stall is so cramped you can barely move your arms and legs, and the toilet is long overdue for a replacement!

The hotel is stunning and full of design, featuring minimalist architecture surrounded by lush greenery and the charm of Jiangnan's water towns. It is truly the perfect place for a vacation. The check-in process was thoughtful and attentive, and a butler even escorted us to the room. The hotel also offers travel photography services; special shoutout to the photographer, Junjie, who was fantastic—he provided amazing emotional support and created such a fun, joyful atmosphere. It didn't feel awkward at all, and the photos turned out gorgeous and natural. Highly recommend the photo shoot! The attention to detail is exceptional.

Title: A cozy artistic inn, rooms so perfect they're like something out of a painting Text: I stayed at TongAn Inn for a few days, and my overall experience was fantastic. The biggest highlight of the inn is its artistic space – the entire area is tastefully decorated, making you feel very relaxed, just like being at home. But what surprised me most was the room. Honestly, I've only ever seen such perfect rooms in pictures. Clean, comfortable, and every detail meticulously arranged. I had a wonderfully happy stay; it was simply impeccable. Breakfast also left me very satisfied. While the variety wasn't extensive, it was more European-style, and the condiments were served separately, allowing you to add them to your taste – unlike street food where a whole bunch is just sprinkled on directly. For a foreign tourist like me, who can't eat too much spicy food, this was a very thoughtful touch. A special thank you goes to Ms. Qian Wei at the front desk. She was incredibly warm and patient, helping me resolve various small issues during my stay, which made me, a foreign tourist, feel particularly welcome. Although there was a language barrier, her smile and service attitude left a lasting impression on me. If you're coming to this city and looking for a unique place to stay that isn't run-of-the-mill, I highly recommend TongAn Inn. I wish the inn thriving business and Qian Wei all the best in her work!

First of all, I really appreciate the front desk service. The young man who helped me with my luggage and check-in was very satisfying. However, after checking in, there were a few things I wasn't happy with. After coming back from sightseeing in the afternoon, I called twice between 2 PM and 5 PM asking for children's slippers, but they were never delivered. In the end, I had to go out again and contact the front desk myself. Secondly, due to the ancient-style decor, the overall room lighting was a bit dim. But the text on the bottles of toiletries in the bathroom was too small. I had to look closely to distinguish them, let alone my parents, as most people over 50 have presbyopia to some extent. Also, I hope there could be a sign near the sink drain explaining how to release the water.

I had to change my initial room due to an issue with the power outlet, and was relocated to the room above the trendy restaurant ”2C Bing”. To my surprise, it turned out to be the popular internet-famous restaurant 2C Bing itself, so I ended up having two meals there. I ordered different dishes each time, and every home-style dish was genuinely delicious. According to the owner, each guesthouse is only allowed to set up two tables, which is why there's always a queue for a table. The room has a charming, antique style with well-maintained amenities and a pretty decent size. Staying right inside the scenic area allows you to take a night walk and experience the unique night scenery of Wuzhen's water towns.

We really enjoyed our stay at this hotel. It is very comfortable and modern, and the location is excellent: it is very close to the main tourist entrances and attractions. We could reach both on foot in less than 15 minutes. That made a big difference, because we could go out in the morning, come back at lunchtime to rest at the hotel, and then go out again with energy to explore and relax. For us, that was very important. The room was extremely comfortable, and the bed and pillows were very comfortable too. The shower was very large, and shampoo was provided. The bathroom did not have a Japanese-style toilet, but that wasn’t a big issue for us. One thing to keep in mind: the hotel has a policy of not changing the sheets or making the bed automatically every day. If you want that done daily, you may need to ask, and even then, don’t count on it. Still, overall it was a great stay, and I would recommend it, especially for the location and comfort.

Our family of seven went to Wuzhen Xizha, and we originally booked the Hilton Garden Inn, but there were no rooms available. We saw this hotel was located with the Hilton, so we booked it, as it was convenient for walking to the scenic area. Although the room wasn't large, the two 1.2-meter beds pushed together were perfect for our situation. I'd say it was the most comfortable night's sleep we had during our entire trip. While the room facilities were average, the great thing was that all the towels were disposable, so hygiene was impeccable. Although breakfast wasn't provided, there's an 8.1 breakfast shop not far away, which allowed us to experience Wuzhen's local breakfast.

This guesthouse was such a great find for our trip to the scenic area! The owner is a local and recommended some amazing, authentic restaurants that weren't expensive at all. The room was clean and cozy, and the toiletries were comfortable and reassuring to use. The front desk lady was very thoughtful, helping us with our luggage. The service was flawless throughout, I truly recommend this place to anyone visiting!

The breakfast is OK, parking is easy, and the breakfast is at the Four Seasons Hotel. So the breakfast at the Four Seasons Hotel is just so-so. The parking lot is the same as the Four Seasons Hotel, so there are many hourly rooms, so the cleaning is not very good. People with cleanliness obsession should avoid it. The room is really small.

I was very satisfied with my stay. The room was clean and tidy, and the breakfast offered a rich variety of options. Some of the chefs also spoke English, which was a plus. It would be even better if the menu for dishes and drinks included English translations. The hotel's proximity to the high-speed rail station made getting around incredibly convenient.

The hotel's public areas are really nice, and the rooms are clean and tidy. The staff are always friendly and greet you when they see you. The laundry room on the 13th floor was a huge convenience on such a rainy day. The gym is also free to use, and the breakfast offers a wide variety of options, so you'll definitely leave full.

This hotel boasts an excellent location, less than a 10-minute walk from Dongzha Scenic Area. Although not a large hotel, I found the service to be incredibly thoughtful overall. First off, the staff's attitude was wonderful, especially at the front desk (and with other hotel staff I encountered) – I truly felt at home. Secondly, the cleanliness was impeccable; both the rooms and public facilities, including the underground parking, were spotless. What also stood out was their attention to detail. They contacted us in advance to communicate and provide helpful travel tips and other important information, which made everything so easy and felt very caring. The breakfast area was pleasant, very clean, and the food tasted great with some local specialties.

A big thank you to Xiao Fu for the thoughtful service; he patiently answered our questions, helped coordinate various matters, and even upgraded our room. He was incredibly reliable. We were very satisfied with both the food and accommodation. Adults and children alike had a wonderful time. The rural holiday atmosphere was truly immersive and worth experiencing. Very close to Xizha. It's a large guesthouse with many rooms and warm service. However, because it also hosts tour groups for dining and rest, the cleanliness of the courtyards and public areas is a bit lacking, and there are many weeds. It's clear they're struggling to keep up. The restaurant is good; the food is excellent for a guesthouse. Breakfast is also very good for a guesthouse. The shower water pressure in the room is a bit low; those with long hair might take a while to wash it. There's a parking lot and EV charging stations. When you come to Wuzhen, don't forget to see the night scenery…

This is genuinely the best hotel I've ever booked. It included two scenic area tickets, so no need to buy them separately, and a choice of either lunch or dinner, plus complimentary morning tea. Everything was truly high-quality. The location is excellent – not damp and very spacious. I stayed in a standard room, which was divided into two sub-rooms, 'A' and 'B', each accessible by card, plus a small lounge area. The environment was superb. The hygiene was excellent, and the facilities were comprehensive; every detail was thought of, which was very thoughtful – truly befitting an international ancient town. Every staff member was wonderfully polite, enthusiastic, and attentive; it was clear they were well-trained. Staying inside the scenic area made it very convenient for exploring and dining. Both sides of the river featured small handicraft workshops, characteristic of a thousand-year-old ancient town. The unified management of the scenic area was exceptionally good, and there were shuttle buses just outside, which was very convenient. It was very quiet for sleeping, yet on the other side, there was a bar street, so you could enjoy both peace and activity. This place offers incredible value for money. I'll definitely come back with my kids next time to take our time exploring and dining. I highly recommend it to everyone!

Staying at the Hidden Villa Design Hotel in Wuzhen was such a find! The location is fantastic, super close to the scenic area – just a few minutes' walk. It was so convenient for exploring, and getting back to the hotel was a breeze. The hotel itself features a modern, minimalist design. The black and white marble bathroom feels incredibly luxurious. The room was spacious, and the large bed with soft, skin-friendly linens was incredibly comfortable. The blackout blinds offered excellent privacy. A soak in the tub was just what I needed to unwind after a long day of sightseeing, and I loved the separate wet and dry areas in the bathroom. They even had a smart toilet and a hairdryer – all the little details were perfectly taken care of. The amenities within the courtyard exceeded my expectations! The huge outdoor pool was incredibly photogenic, and there was a row of adorable shared electric scooters, which were perfect for a relaxing ride around the neighborhood. The front desk staff were warm and attentive, responding quickly to any requests. The parking lot even had charging stations, so no worries if you're driving. The overall environment was quiet and peaceful, and the facilities were new, clean, and odor-free. It perfectly blends design aesthetics with comfort. I'd definitely choose this place again on my next visit to Wuzhen!

The B&B's location is pretty good, quite close to Wuzhen Xizha Scenic Area, about a 15-20 minute walk to the entrance. The facilities are just decent. We booked a family room this time, which consisted of two separate connecting rooms. The space was quite small, and it seems the B&B has been open for some years now as some of the facilities are a bit old and the shower water wasn't hot enough. The service could also be improved. Unlike other B&Bs, they didn't contact us in advance to confirm our itinerary or proactively add us on WeChat. However, they did give us a souvenir when we left and helped us send a package, which we appreciated. The room rate was also quite high during Chinese New Year, jumping from over 300 RMB on weekdays to over 1200 RMB, which wasn't very friendly, especially since Wuzhen Scenic Area was also packed with people during the holiday. So, overall, the experience wasn't great.

I chose this hotel after comparing various options around the Wuzhen Xizhazi Scenic Area. Living abroad, I couldn't travel with my parents and family, but I really wanted to find a nice place where they could be comfortable, relaxed, and have a wonderful experience during their trip. They couldn't stop praising the accommodation, saying it far exceeded their expectations. Aside from the top-notch, attentive service and the fantastic environment, the breakfast was absolute highlight. Hearing all their compliments makes me eager to stay here myself one day. A huge thank you to the hotel for the exceptional service! Please forgive the amateur photography skills in the photos my parents took 😊. Anyway, it's a well-deserved five-star review! Thumbs up!

The air conditioner's internal air outlet looks dark and the bath towel is also hard to say. The toilet can't be flushed on the last day of leaving the store. Oh, I know it. I feel used to it. It's not a big deal. Hehehe, there was a power outage in the morning. The other wall is separated from the outside at 7 o'clock in the morning. Free morning service. Piling construction. Hehehe.
