Osaka’s Airports: Kansai International and Itami Domestic
If you're flying to Osaka direct from Australia, it’s a safe bet to say you're landing at Kansai International Airport. Every direct route from Australia goes there along with every other international flight into the region.
Osaka Itami Airport is the city’s primary domestic airport. Funny thing though: it actually used to be called Osaka International Airport in English. As you can imagine, a lot of tourists were caught off guard, ending up at the wrong airport. The confusion got bad enough that the operator dropped that name in 2025 and rebranded it Osaka Itami Airport.

Osaka Airport Terminals
Here’s a breakdown of the terminals at both Kansai International Airport and Itami Domestic Airport.
Kansai International Airport Terminal 1
Terminal 1 is the Renzo Piano building that handles nearly everything at KIX, and at 1.7 kilometres it's the longest airport terminal in the world. Take that as a fun fact and as a warning, as the walk to your gate could turn into a bit of a hike, so this is one airport where you shouldn’t be cutting it fine.
The terminal has just come out of a four-year renovation (completed in June 2026), so everything is brand new. International departures area is now about 60% bigger than it was before, security screening has the latest tech and consolidated into an expanded checkpoint that handles about 6,000 passengers an hour, and you’ll have the joy of shopping at Japan’s largest walk-through duty-free store.
Kansai International Airport Terminal 2
Terminal 2 was Japan's first purpose-built low-cost carrier terminal, and its domestic side reopened on 1 April 2026 after a renovation that brought in self-service bag drop, three 20-metre smart security lanes, a bigger boarding lounge and a four-outlet food court.
Only three airlines use it: Peach, Jeju Air and Spring Airlines. Every other carrier at Kansai is in Terminal 1.

Osaka Itami Airport Terminal
Itami Domestic Airport has just one long terminal, but divided into three sections: North Terminal, Central Terminal, and South Terminal. Japan Airlines and its regional partners use the North, ANA and IBEX use the South, and the Central section holds most of the shops, restaurants and the observation deck.
Getting Between Terminals in Osaka
Kansai Terminal 1 to Terminal 2: To transfer between terminals at Kansai International Airport, there’s a free shuttle bus every 7 to 9 minutes. Note that you can’t walk between these terminals, as they’re 4 kilometres apart and treated as separate entities for immigration, which also means there’s no airside transfers between them.
Kansai to Itami: If you’re flying into Kansai and then have a domestic flight from Itami, there’s one public option: the limousine bus. It takes about 70 to 80 minutes of driving through Osaka. There’s no train link, and taxis are expensive. The bus costs ¥1,950 (around A$17.50) for an adult.

The old-fashioned bakeries along the roadside displayed freshly baked pastries; the golden-yellow crust of the egg yolk pastries was so flaky it crumbled easily. The owner stood at the door, warmly inviting us in to try them. My colleague stood in front of the glass display case for a long time, saying it reminded her of her grandmother always buying pastries from this bakery when she was little, and how she could find a sweet wife cake in her schoolbag after school. A faint aroma of braised meat wafted through the air, and we followed the scent into a braised food shop tucked away in the alley. Shelves were filled with all sorts of braised ingredients; the glistening goose meat gleamed enticingly under the lights. The owner skillfully sliced a plate of goose meat, drizzled it with special braising sauce, and the goose skin was crisp and springy, the meat tender and juicy—every bite was savory and flavorful. We picked out several boxes of different pastries to bring back to our colleagues in the office. After leaving the shop, we continued walking, passing a small stall selling fish ball noodles. The proprietress was pressing fish balls by hand at the entrance, the fresh fish paste transforming in her hands… The bouncy fish balls, when dropped into boiling water, floated up and were bursting with freshness. She gave each of us a freshly cooked fish ball to try for free. The hot, chewy texture was full of the sweetness of the fish. We strolled along, encountering all sorts of interesting snack shops and enthusiastic local owners. Without any itinerary or pre-planned trip, we were filled with unexpected surprises. We wandered through one hidden food corner after another in the alleys, seeing many authentic shops that we would never notice on a normal trip. These ordinary flavors, without the fancy packaging of trendy shops, were more heartwarming than any carefully crafted photo spot. We chatted about old snacks we ate as children, our laughter filling every path we walked. It wasn't until the afterglow of the setting sun stretched our shadows long that we realized we had unknowingly spent the whole afternoon shopping. Our hands were full of packed snacks, and our wrists were still stained with a little bit of the custard we had just tasted. Our hearts were filled with a sense of contentment and joy. When they got back to their accommodation that evening and opened the packed pastries, the flaky crust of the egg yolk pastry fell all over the table. The two of them picked it up and ate it at the same time, getting their hands covered in butter.

Kansai (KIX) Terminal 1:
- Check-in: international on 4F, domestic on 2F. Jetstar Japan is here, not Terminal 2.
- Security: 4F, clears around 6,000 passengers an hour.
- Timing: There’s 1.7 km of terminal here, so allow for the walk to your gate.
Kansai (KIX) Terminal 2:
- Check-in: Peach, Jeju Air and Spring Airlines only. Self-service bag drop and three 20-metre smart security lanes.
- Timing: no railway station here, so you’ll need to add the shuttle ride from Terminal 1 to your arrival calculations (it takes about 7 minutes, plus waiting for it to arrive).

- Before you land: Register on Visit Japan Web for QR codes covering the arrival card and customs declaration. KIX uses a joint Kiosk that reads your passport and QR code in one step and clears immigration and customs together.
- International: Immigration (Joint Kiosk or standard counters), baggage claim, customs, then out to the ground-floor arrivals hall.
- Domestic: Straight to baggage claim, no immigration.
Osaka Itami (ITM):
- Domestic only, so no immigration or customs. North Terminal for JAL, South for ANA and IBEX. Central for shops and the monorail station.
Duty Free at Osaka Airport
Since the completed renovations, Duty free at Kansai Airport is now the largest walk-through duty-free store in Japan. You’ll find it after passport control in the international departures area. Expect the classic luxury brands, including a few that are making their first appearance at any Japanese airport, and a good selection of Kansai specialities for any last-minute souvenirs.

Blown away by the bakery downstairs! Not only do they have freshly baked bread, but also delicious and affordable food from the hotel restaurant. I loved how plentiful the hotel shuttle bus and taxis were! 😍
On our first night, we got an upgraded room. While it was bigger, the toilet and shower were combined. Since we were traveling with an elder, I was concerned about the safety of climbing in and out of the bathtub. After speaking with the front desk, they changed us back to our original room type. The next day, the hotel staff even brought our luggage directly to the new room and helped set up the extra bed – I was so grateful! ❤️

Facilities: The facilities are comprehensive, with all daily necessities provided in the room, so there's no need to buy extra or bring your own. Each floor has self-service washing machines with both washing and drying functions, which is very convenient. Just prepare one-yen coins, or you can exchange them at the front desk.
Hygiene: The hygiene is excellent, very clean overall. If you need your room cleaned, you need to put the cleaning sign on the door before 2 PM; otherwise, it won't be cleaned.
Environment: The environment is superb, right in the city center, very close to Shinsaibashi and Umeda commercial districts, just one subway stop away. The subway is the Midosuji Line (red line), and it's about a 700m walk from the hotel. It's also quiet despite being in a bustling area. The hotel surroundings are very peaceful, with a 7-Eleven and a coffee shop right outside, and many restaurants and cafes nearby.

The air conditioning finally works independently, allowing for individual control and adjustment. The air felt much fresher, unlike before when the AC always seemed insufficient. The location is superb; you can take the airport bus directly to the Uehommachi Kintetsu Bus Terminal, and on your way out, you can also easily get a direct bus to the airport. While the subway isn't on a main line, it's still quite convenient. Nearby is a somewhat old-fashioned Kintetsu Plaza, where you can find pretty much everything for shopping and dining. They clean the rooms everyday unless you put the do not disturb magnet up!

The location is fantastic, right to the right of the JR station's central exit. You step out of JR and you're there. It's surrounded by shops, right in the heart of the commercial district.
Check-in is on the 19th floor, and the guest rooms are from the 20th to 27th floors, offering great views.

We booked a quad room for our family of four, and everyone got a great night's sleep. Shopping at department stores and drugstores was incredibly convenient, and there were plenty of dining options nearby. The picture shows our first meal, which we randomly picked on the 8th floor right below the hotel – it was delicious! The public transport nearby can take you to any attraction you want to visit. Both check-in and check-out were self-service and easy to use.
Things to note:
1. Remember to ask the front desk for skincare products.
2. There's a microwave in the corner of the lobby for heating food.
3. For extra trash to be collected, you need to stick a yellow sticker (found behind the door) on the garbage bag.
4. There's no water in the room, but you can get drinking water in the lobby, or buy it daily from FamilyMart downstairs.
Oh, and the direct airport bus service is really a big plus! I'm not a travel expert, but following a guide made everything straightforward. I saw mixed reviews for this hotel, but I still wanted to share my genuine experience for others' reference. My child loved the room's decor and facilities. We could see most of Universal Studios Japan from the room. The TV had Phoenix Satellite Television, but I couldn't find any Universal movies. The staff were incredibly friendly. We received a princess-themed toiletries set upon check-in. We stayed for two nights, and the cleaning on the second day was just as thorough as on the first day, which was a huge plus. The hotel restaurants were all delicious. My child didn't want to leave. There's a Sushiro and a food street nearby, along with various Lawson convenience stores. The machine even comes with detergent and fabric softener, so my clothes smelled great and felt fluffy. The reception area is huge, with a simple yet elegant design, highlighted by a beautiful staircase that creates a welcoming atmosphere. The dining area is also quite simple, but the food selection was sufficient to give us enough energy for a fun and exciting day at Universal Studios Japan (USJ). The bed and pillows were incredibly comfortable, making it easy to rest after a long day. The toilet and shower area were very clean, although there was a slight odor whenever the water was turned on or the toilet was flushed. I'm not sure what caused it, but we experienced the same issue at our previous hotel as well. Fortunately, Keihan provided a toilet deodorizing spray, which was a thoughtful touch. One of my favorite features was the hair dryer and hair straightener provided in the room. They were of excellent quality and very convenient to use. The hotel's location is fantastic. It has its own direct access to Universal CityWalk and is also very convenient for reaching USJ. I absolutely loved staying at this hotel! The staff were easy to communicate with, friendly, and all spoke English, which made our stay even more enjoyable.
The only downside was the steam bath on the 31st floor, which requires an additional fee. Personally, I think this should be included as part of the hotel's amenities and made complimentary for all guests.

A nice big hotel near Kyobashi station and Osaka Castle, wonderful area with many food places and easy access to many parts of Osaka.
The hotel itself is very clean, fresh linen, fluffy towels and the usual amenities.
At the moment there is construction work next door but it wasn’t really that bad, couldn’t tell you much about the onsite onson as I have tattoos and unable to go there and I’m not sure about the breakfast either as we were always up early to be where we had to be.

I chose the Royal Park Hotel at Osaka Kitahama Station again this time. The room was spacious and clean. You can find amenities like shower caps, toothbrushes, razors, face masks, and loofahs at the self-service machine next to the check-in counter on the 2nd floor. The hotel is conveniently located within 100 meters of the Subway K Line, Hankyu KH Line, and Keihan Main Line HK. The Subway M Line is also within 700 meters. Pleasantly surprised at how convenient this hotel is to the shopping malls and the famous Dotonbori district, all within short walking distances. Hotel staff are friendly and helpful. Breakfast is yummy with a fairly wide selection of food and beverages. Would highly recommend Cross Hotel to especially shopaholics as no transportation needed. Fantastic location! Just cross the traffic light and you are right in the heart of Shinsaibashi. Whoever loves Lululemon it is just right opposite the hotel. The room come with washing machine which is great for families. The only thing not good is that the hotel lighting is insufficient. It’s a little bit dim. The room was a bit small, I booked a twin room for 2200 a night at the end of May. It was okay though, haha, the location is great, very convenient to get anywhere. It's right next to the station, and there are plenty of places to eat nearby. Hermes is right downstairs.

I always opt for five-star hotels when I travel, but summer prices were just too high this year. So, I took a friend's recommendation and booked this place instead. 👍
It's about an hour from Kansai Airport, and Exit 13 is the closest to the hotel. The downside is there's no elevator there, so if you have a lot of luggage, I'd suggest Exit 16, which has one.
The hotel's service and facilities are excellent. The room was quite spacious by Japanese hotel standards, and the bedding was incredibly comfortable – we slept soundly every night. The location is also fantastic, about a 15-minute walk to Shinsaibashi. We stayed for five nights this time and visited Kobe and Kyoto. The Chuo and Midosuji subway lines right downstairs were super convenient.
I have to mention one particular incident. Check-out was at 11 AM, and our flight wasn't until 5 PM on the last day. Thinking we had plenty of time, my child and I went to Nipponbashi that morning. It wasn't until we got there that I remembered check-out was at 11! Luckily, my mother wasn't with us; she was having coffee at a cafe across from the hotel. I immediately contacted her and asked her to rush back to check out. But to our surprise, her Huawei phone couldn't connect to the hotel's Wi-Fi when she got back, and the only Pocket Wi-Fi device was with me! 😵💫 Since the reservation was under my name, the front desk needed to confirm check-out with me personally. But there was a language barrier, and my mom had no internet. She was incredibly flustered at that moment. Just then, a Chinese-speaking staff member appeared. He first calmed her down, telling her not to worry and that he would find a way to contact me, also explaining that the hotel's network was often unstable. He then took out a device and tried to connect her phone to the Wi-Fi in the lobby, but after many attempts, it didn't work. So, he took my mother back to the room and tried many more times until it finally connected, and he was able to reach me... His professionalism and meticulous work attitude deeply touched our entire family. We'd like to express our gratitude once again! I will definitely choose Tokyu Stay Osaka Hommachi again next time I visit Osaka. 👍FromAU$ 92

The room was spacious and well-equipped. Although the hotel is a bit old, it's very well-maintained.
Upon checking in, a staff member accompanied us all the way to our room.
The window offered a view of the Osaka city skyline and a beautiful riverside scenery, perfect for a stroll, and we could watch the sunset from our room.
The hotel has an annex, but the shops inside were mostly closed and rundown. There was one restaurant open during the day, with windows facing the river, offering light meals and afternoon tea.
The biggest drawback was the inconvenient transportation. There's a free shuttle bus every 20 minutes from outside the Starbucks at JR Osaka Station's Sakurabashi exit, which takes about 15 minutes to reach the hotel. Walking to the nearest subway station takes about seven to eight minutes. There are very few restaurants or shopping malls near the hotel.FromAU$ 175

My teenage boys thoroughly enjoyed the onsen, night ramen, ice cream, and massage chairs. The Dormy Inn is very conveniently located—Kitahama Station (Brown Line) is less than a 2-minute walk away, and Yodoyabashi Station is about a 7-minute walk at a normal pace. Convenience stores and restaurants are also within 1–3 minutes’ walk.
Aside from the cold winter temperatures, everything was excellent. There was no room cleaning during our 6-night stay; however, fresh towels were replenished daily. This is a quiet district, and if not for the winter chill, we would have gladly explored more of the surroundings on foot.FromAU$ 105

I have stayed in this hotel 3 times now and look forward to staying again. The rooms are the usual compact size, are clean and comfortable. The ground floor area has a microwave, free soft drinks and coffee and is quite pleasant.

Right next to Shin-Imamiya subway station, so getting around is incredibly convenient. The front desk staff rotate, with two people on duty at a time, including locals, Chinese, Koreans, and Indians. There's a women's shower on the 4th floor, men's showers on the 6th, and a men's bathhouse and microwave on the 10th. Downstairs, there are convenience stores, pharmacies, and places to eat nearby. The room was super small, but quite clean, and they provided towels and plastic slippers. Because it's close to the train tracks, there's a bit of noise.
