Osaka’s Airports: Kansai International and Itami Domestic
If you're flying to Osaka direct from Australia, it’s a safe bet to say you're landing at Kansai International Airport. Every direct route from Australia goes there along with every other international flight into the region.
Osaka Itami Airport is the city’s primary domestic airport. Funny thing though: it actually used to be called Osaka International Airport in English. As you can imagine, a lot of tourists were caught off guard, ending up at the wrong airport. The confusion got bad enough that the operator dropped that name in 2025 and rebranded it Osaka Itami Airport.

Osaka Airport Terminals
Here’s a breakdown of the terminals at both Kansai International Airport and Itami Domestic Airport.
Kansai International Airport Terminal 1
Terminal 1 is the Renzo Piano building that handles nearly everything at KIX, and at 1.7 kilometres it's the longest airport terminal in the world. Take that as a fun fact and as a warning, as the walk to your gate could turn into a bit of a hike, so this is one airport where you shouldn’t be cutting it fine.
The terminal has just come out of a four-year renovation (completed in June 2026), so everything is brand new. International departures area is now about 60% bigger than it was before, security screening has the latest tech and consolidated into an expanded checkpoint that handles about 6,000 passengers an hour, and you’ll have the joy of shopping at Japan’s largest walk-through duty-free store.
Kansai International Airport Terminal 2
Terminal 2 was Japan's first purpose-built low-cost carrier terminal, and its domestic side reopened on 1 April 2026 after a renovation that brought in self-service bag drop, three 20-metre smart security lanes, a bigger boarding lounge and a four-outlet food court.
Only three airlines use it: Peach, Jeju Air and Spring Airlines. Every other carrier at Kansai is in Terminal 1.

Osaka Itami Airport Terminal
Itami Domestic Airport has just one long terminal, but divided into three sections: North Terminal, Central Terminal, and South Terminal. Japan Airlines and its regional partners use the North, ANA and IBEX use the South, and the Central section holds most of the shops, restaurants and the observation deck.
Getting Between Terminals in Osaka
Kansai Terminal 1 to Terminal 2: To transfer between terminals at Kansai International Airport, there’s a free shuttle bus every 7 to 9 minutes. Note that you can’t walk between these terminals, as they’re 4 kilometres apart and treated as separate entities for immigration, which also means there’s no airside transfers between them.
Kansai to Itami: If you’re flying into Kansai and then have a domestic flight from Itami, there’s one public option: the limousine bus. It takes about 70 to 80 minutes of driving through Osaka. There’s no train link, and taxis are expensive. The bus costs ¥1,950 (around A$17.50) for an adult.

All the corners in the rooms are padded, and hidden child safety locks are discreetly installed behind cabinet doors, ensuring children's safety without compromising the overall elegance. Sitting on the stone bench in the courtyard feeding the fish, even my usually boisterous child has calmed down, saying this place is more fun than an amusement park.

- Security: 4F, clears around 6,000 passengers an hour.
- Timing: There’s 1.7 km of terminal here, so allow for the walk to your gate.
Kansai (KIX) Terminal 2:

- Timing: no railway station here, so you’ll need to add the shuttle ride from Terminal 1 to your arrival calculations (it takes about 7 minutes, plus waiting for it to arrive).

Kansai (KIX):
- Before you land: Register on Visit Japan Web for QR codes covering the arrival card and customs declaration. KIX uses a joint Kiosk that reads your passport and QR code in one step and clears immigration and customs together.
- International: Immigration (Joint Kiosk or standard counters), baggage claim, customs, then out to the ground-floor arrivals hall.
- Domestic: Straight to baggage claim, no immigration.
Osaka Itami (ITM):
- Domestic only, so no immigration or customs. North Terminal for JAL, South for ANA and IBEX. Central for shops and the monorail station.
Duty Free at Osaka Airport
Since the completed renovations, Duty free at Kansai Airport is now the largest walk-through duty-free store in Japan. You’ll find it after passport control in the international departures area. Expect the classic luxury brands, including a few that are making their first appearance at any Japanese airport, and a good selection of Kansai specialities for any last-minute souvenirs.

On our first night, we got an upgraded room. While it was bigger, the toilet and shower were combined. Since we were traveling with an elder, I was concerned about the safety of climbing in and out of the bathtub. After speaking with the front desk, they changed us back to our original room type. The next day, the hotel staff even brought our luggage directly to the new room and helped set up the extra bed – I was so grateful! ❤️

Location: Situated above Daimaru department store. If you're coming from Kansai Airport via Haruka, it's about a 15-minute walk to the hotel following the JR Osaka signs. The entire route is indoors. It's even closer if you take the JR local train to Osaka Station. After exiting the platform, find the Central South Exit. Walk to the very end where there are stairs going down – *don't go down*. Instead, take the stairs going up on either side. The left side leads to the main entrance of Daimaru, and the hotel entrance is on the right. Take the elevator directly to the 19th-floor reception. There are countless shops in the vicinity, all centered around Osaka Station. To get to Daimaru from the hotel, you must take the elevator down to the first floor.
Service: This is a well-established hotel, and the service is excellent. The front desk, restaurant, and floor staff all demonstrate professionalism. Mineral water is provided daily, and the hotel has an ice machine and vending machines. Breakfast is plentiful. Guests can purchase it for 4100 JPY per person.
Room: The room size is decent; you can easily open three 24-inch suitcases. It's clean, and the air conditioning works well.
Summary: Convenient for shopping and dining, and very easy to get to surrounding areas by JR: Kobe in 30 minutes, Kyoto in 40 minutes, and Nara in 60 minutes. Clean, tidy, and good service – an ideal choice.FromAU$ 107

We booked a quad room for our family of four, and everyone got a great night's sleep. Shopping at department stores and drugstores was incredibly convenient, and there were plenty of dining options nearby. The picture shows our first meal, which we randomly picked on the 8th floor right below the hotel – it was delicious! The public transport nearby can take you to any attraction you want to visit. Both check-in and check-out were self-service and easy to use.
Things to note:
1. Remember to ask the front desk for skincare products.
2. There's a microwave in the corner of the lobby for heating food.
3. For extra trash to be collected, you need to stick a yellow sticker (found behind the door) on the garbage bag.
4. There's no water in the room, but you can get drinking water in the lobby, or buy it daily from FamilyMart downstairs.
Oh, and the direct airport bus service is really a big plus! I'm not a travel expert, but following a guide made everything straightforward. I saw mixed reviews for this hotel, but I still wanted to share my genuine experience for others' reference. This hotel popped up as the top result when I searched for hotels in Osaka on Ctrip, and it definitely lived up to its reputation. The location is excellent – not far from the airport express line and several subway stations, plus it's within walking distance to Nihonbashi, Shinsaibashi, and Dotonbori, which is super convenient. The hotel has a good number of rooms, and what's particularly great is that there are many twin rooms with ample space. Each room comes with a microwave, a fridge, and a table. We mostly ate breakfast in our room, buying milk, salads, bread, and rice balls from the nearby 7-Eleven, which was cheap and easy. There's also plenty of space to hang clothes, and they provide a generous supply of hangers – a must-have for washing clothes daily in the summer. On the fifth floor, there's a self-service laundry room, and on the sixth floor, a shared 'kitchenette' where you can do some simple cooking and get water, which was very handy. If you're going to Universal Studios Japan, you HAVE to stay here! You can't get any closer to the park. I took the Shinki Bus directly from Sannomiya, Kobe, to the park entrance, and then it was just a short walk to the hotel. You can drop off your luggage first; they have a dedicated luggage storage room. The front desk will give you a card to access it and can even exchange coins for you to use in the lockers. The coins are returned after you retrieve your luggage. The room facilities are complete and comfortable, and the room itself is super spacious! The location is absolutely fantastic! The airport shuttle bus goes directly to Universal Studios. After getting off, it's just a short walk following the signs. Right outside the hotel's back door, a right turn leads you straight to the subway station 🚇.
We booked a triple room. It wasn't huge, but considering it's Japan and in the Universal area, it's probably to be expected. It was a bit snug, which is typical for Japan, but for the price, I felt it offered pretty good value for money.
Stepping out of the hotel, you're right in the middle of a commercial center, with everything for eating, drinking, and shopping – a true one-stop shop. It's incredibly convenient for indulging in some retail therapy and delicious food.
Here's a little tip for Universal Studios: If you want great photos, try to find one of the staff members. They are excellent photographers and the pictures turn out amazing. We randomly asked an elderly cleaning staff member that day, and it turned out he was a photography pro! Every single shot was fantastic, providing 100% emotional value. Convenient walking distance to and from the Sakaisuji-Honmachi Station serving the Chuo Line [C] and Sakaisuji Line [K], makes for an easy thoroughfare to all parts of the city, Umeda, and Universal Studios, too. Great amenities are its upper floor Onsen on the 14th floor, along with the swimming pool and gym facilities for an additional (2 700¥) per visit. Room size is fairly spacious for solo travelers, but opt for beds for two persons or couples. The hotel does not have laundry facilities though the nearest laundromat is about 6-blocks away. Very clean and open 24/24.
This hotel has a chapel inside on the second floor for those who are observant travelers (for Christian devotees). There are several other temples and shrines all within distance from the hotel itself. Accommodations are very good from a short stay to a business traveler’s perspective or personal experience within this part of Osaka’s financial districts. The breakfast exceeded my expectations; they had my favorite wagyu beef, ice cream, a variety of drinks, fruits, and even snacks that could double as souvenirs. However, the room felt a bit cramped and dated. For instance, there was only one chair and a small table, making it difficult to eat takeout. The TV wasn't mounted on the wall, which made the space feel even narrower. If there was a long sofa by the window, it would prevent guests from having to sit on the bed immediately upon entering the room.
During checkout, I realized I had been misled by the hotel package. Extremely satisfied with this hotel! The room size was just right, and housekeeping did a fantastic job every day, keeping it spotless. The location is also great and super convenient. The subway station is right across the street, and from our room, we could even see the Ferris wheel of the Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan. Getting to Universal Studios Japan was a breeze too, just three stops away, and we were at the park in about 20 minutes. You can find amenities like shower caps, toothbrushes, razors, face masks, and loofahs at the self-service machine next to the check-in counter on the 2nd floor. The hotel is conveniently located within 100 meters of the Subway K Line, Hankyu KH Line, and Keihan Main Line HK. The Subway M Line is also within 700 meters. Location is perfect. Breakfast was perfect. Lounge would be better with more food varieties but they had a lot of drinks options including sake, champagne, wine and beer on top of the usuals which was great.
One thing i didnt like is that their rooms are super tiny. We got a triple room and it was so tight. Next maybe two doubles is required for more space. Another disappointment is that they don't provide lotion which i think is a basic amenity. And that every certain hours of the night 10-ish -2am (everyday) you can hear super noisy motorcycles revving in the main street randomly. I always opt for five-star hotels when I travel, but summer prices were just too high this year. So, I took a friend's recommendation and booked this place instead. 👍
It's about an hour from Kansai Airport, and Exit 13 is the closest to the hotel. The downside is there's no elevator there, so if you have a lot of luggage, I'd suggest Exit 16, which has one.
The hotel's service and facilities are excellent. The room was quite spacious by Japanese hotel standards, and the bedding was incredibly comfortable – we slept soundly every night. The location is also fantastic, about a 15-minute walk to Shinsaibashi. We stayed for five nights this time and visited Kobe and Kyoto. The Chuo and Midosuji subway lines right downstairs were super convenient.
I have to mention one particular incident. Check-out was at 11 AM, and our flight wasn't until 5 PM on the last day. Thinking we had plenty of time, my child and I went to Nipponbashi that morning. It wasn't until we got there that I remembered check-out was at 11! Luckily, my mother wasn't with us; she was having coffee at a cafe across from the hotel. I immediately contacted her and asked her to rush back to check out. But to our surprise, her Huawei phone couldn't connect to the hotel's Wi-Fi when she got back, and the only Pocket Wi-Fi device was with me! 😵💫 Since the reservation was under my name, the front desk needed to confirm check-out with me personally. But there was a language barrier, and my mom had no internet. She was incredibly flustered at that moment. Just then, a Chinese-speaking staff member appeared. He first calmed her down, telling her not to worry and that he would find a way to contact me, also explaining that the hotel's network was often unstable. He then took out a device and tried to connect her phone to the Wi-Fi in the lobby, but after many attempts, it didn't work. So, he took my mother back to the room and tried many more times until it finally connected, and he was able to reach me... His professionalism and meticulous work attitude deeply touched our entire family. We'd like to express our gratitude once again! I will definitely choose Tokyu Stay Osaka Hommachi again next time I visit Osaka. 👍FromAU$ 97

The Imperial Hotel Osaka boasts an excellent location near Sakuranomiya Station, offering stunning river views from its upper floors and even a glimpse of Osaka Castle in the distance. Below, the riverside greenery and small beach create a serene and lovely atmosphere.
The hotel has a vintage charm, and while some facilities show their age, it didn't detract from a comfortable stay. The mattress was just right – not too soft, not too firm – and even the single beds were spacious. Room insulation was good, and the shower had strong, hot water, which was very pleasant. However, the lighting was a bit dim, making it slightly inconvenient for getting ready.
This visit was specifically to experience the 'Miyake' (a term for the three most prestigious hotels in Japan) level of service, and indeed, this venerable hotel delivered polite and thoughtful service without feeling overbearing. For instance, when checking out, knowing we had plenty of time before our flight and planned to explore Umeda further, they proactively reminded us about their shuttle service to the airport if we were heading there directly. When we said we were going to Umeda, they even asked if we'd like to leave our luggage at the hotel. They also directly helped us with calling a taxi, specifying the destination, and handling our luggage. I truly loved their Japanese staff!
However, it seems the hotel has hired some South Asian staff for housekeeping. I noticed some dust on the glass shelf in the bathroom and on the TV cabinet. But these are minor issues, and overall, the cleaning was quite thorough.FromAU$ 173

The room view was average, and the hotel is a bit of a walk from Shinsaibashi Station. The elevator had a noticeable unpleasant odour when going from the ground floor to the 3rd floor. Overall, the experience was just average.

My teenage boys thoroughly enjoyed the onsen, night ramen, ice cream, and massage chairs. The Dormy Inn is very conveniently located—Kitahama Station (Brown Line) is less than a 2-minute walk away, and Yodoyabashi Station is about a 7-minute walk at a normal pace. Convenience stores and restaurants are also within 1–3 minutes’ walk.

There's a women's shower on the 4th floor, men's showers on the 6th, and a men's bathhouse and microwave on the 10th. Downstairs, there are convenience stores, pharmacies, and places to eat nearby. The room was super small, but quite clean, and they provided towels and plastic slippers. Because it's close to the train tracks, there's a bit of noise. Location was impeccable, just diagonally opposite Namba and the Nankai line that leads to Kansai airport. Lotsa food in the vicinity of the hotel.
The room looked new, were clean, quiet and relatively spacious for up to 2 people. By relatively spacious, I could leave open a suitcase on the couch at the foot of the bed without having too much issues moving about.
The toilet was the standard Japanese style inbuilt capsule with the auto-washing WCs and nice-smelling shower gel, shampoo n conditioner. Other amenities, like toothbrush, lotion, shaver, cotton buds, etc. can be self-picked at the lobby for free.
