Suzhou Metro is one of China's most extensive and efficient metro networks, seamlessly connecting the city's historic districts with modern urban centers.
The metro is renowned for its cleanliness, efficiency and affordability, with fares ranging from 2-7 RMB depending on distance traveled.
While it can get quite crowded during peak hours (try to avoid 7-10 AM and 5-8 PM if possible!), it remains the most convenient way to navigate between Suzhou's classical gardens, modern commercial centers, and the picturesque canalside areas.
Suzhou Metro Lines and Station List

The Suzhou Metro system comprises 6 operational lines, each identified by a distinct color on maps and signage (Lines 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 11). While the city center is primarily served by underground sections, many suburban stretches of the network run on elevated tracks, offering scenic views of the city.
Most Frequently Used Major Lines
- Line 1 (Green): The essential north-south backbone of the city. It connects Suzhou Railway Station in the north to vibrant southern districts. Key Stations: Pingjiang Road (historic canal street), Leqiao (for the Suzhou Museum and Humble Administrator's Garden), and Times Square (modern shopping and business).
- Line 2 (Red): A major east-west artery. It is particularly useful for travelers as it links the Suzhou North Railway Station to the city's core. Key Stations: Shantang Street (famous ancient street), Guangji Road (city center shopping and transfers), and Sanyang Square (commercial hub).
- Line 4 (Blue): A crucial line that circles the southern and eastern parts of the city center, providing efficient access to several attractions and bypassing the need to travel through the busiest central interchange stations. Key Stations: Guanqian Street (busy pedestrian shopping street), Lindun Road (for the Suzhou Industrial Park), and Tongli Ancient Town (access to the water town).
How to Use the Suzhou Metro

Suzhou Metro | Step 1 Ticketing Options
You can purchase one-way tickets at the automatic ticket vending machines with cash or by scanning a code.
You can also purchase or recharge the Suzhou Public Transport Card at the automatic card vending machine.
There are two types of card vending machines. One can only be used for recharging, while the other can sell and return cards as well as recharge. There is a sticker on the waist of the machine for instructions. Basically, there is a card available for sale and refund at every subway station. The payment methods supported include scanning codes from common payment apps and UnionPay physical cards.
Suzhou Metro | Step 2 Security Check
The security check in Suzhou Metro is slightly more lenient than that in other cities. Just open your small bag and let the security inspector take a look. Restricted items can be referred to other cities or national railways.
Suzhou Metro | Step 3 Entry

Single-trip tickets, daily tickets, physical or NFC transportation cards should be directly affixed to the sensing area above the turnstile for entry. Just align the ride code with the scanning window. For the Metro Metropolitan ride code, the Bluetooth function needs to be turned on. At some stations, the gates are piloted to remain open all the time. If you enter without having your ticket checked, the gates will close.
Suzhou Metro | Step 4 Boarding Trains

There are trains running in different directions or with different destinations. Please pay attention. The announcements inside the carriages of the Suzhou Metro are relatively quiet, and some lines do not have very intuitive display screens in the carriages. It is essential not to miss your stop.
Suzhou Metro | Step 5 Exiting & Transfers

Single-trip tickets for exiting the station are directly inserted into the ticket gate of the turnstile for collection. The operation method for other types of tickets and cards is the same as that for entering the station. At several virtual transfer stations (such as Terminal 2 of Hongqiao Airport, Suzhou Railway Station, Nanjing West Road, etc.), non-one-way tickets can enjoy continuous charging and are not counted as exiting the station.
The single ride on the Suzhou Metro is limited to 4 hours. If you exceed this time limit, you will need to pay the minimum fare of 3 yuan. If you need to exit at the same station within 15 minutes after entering the station, you can go to the service desk to cancel your entry record and then exit manually. There is no charge.

Suzhou Metro Top 5 Transfer Hub
- Guangji Road Station (Lines 1 & 4): This is the most critical interchange in the city center, connecting the north-south Line 1 with the semi-loop Line 4.
- Leqiao Station (Lines 1 & 4): Serves as a major transfer point for the western part of the city center, providing access to the Suzhou Museum and the Humble Administrator's Garden.
- Suzhou Railway Station (Lines 2 & 4): The primary hub for integrating long-distance travel (high-speed trains, conventional trains) with the metro network.
- Sanyang Square Station (Lines 1 & 3): An important and often busy interchange in the eastern commercial and industrial park area.
- South Guangji Road / Lindun Road Area (Proximity Strategy): While not a single station, the close proximity of South Guangji Road (Line 4) and Lindun Road (Line 1) stations creates a de facto "super hub" in the heart of the Suzhou Industrial Park (SIP).
Suzhou Metro Transfer Guide
1. Search through map software
The simplest and most straightforward method is to make use of map software, such as Autonavi Maps and Baidu Maps. Just search for the destination you want to go on the map APP, and you can get a variety of transfer options. In addition to the transfer plan, you can also see the time required for the journey, which is convenient for reasonably planning the travel time.
2. Site Guidance
If you can't use the relevant map APP, you can check the track of the line at the subway station or inside the subway. All the stations where you can transfer have relevant signs. As long as you find the station where the line you need to transfer to is located, you can transfer easily.
3. Consult the staff or passengers
If you are still not sure, you can ask the subway station staff or other passengers. They are usually willing to offer help.
