"This was the most satisfying hotel experience of our trip to Japan. From the moment we were welcomed at the entrance to our final farewell wave as the shuttle bus departed, every detail was impeccable. The rooms, dining, and hot springs were all absolutely faultless."

"I would really like to give this place a full five star because of the spacious room and good service but the location was quite far from the main station and shuttle buses were limited (only 3x per day to the station and back). Taxis from the station to the hotel costs around 900 yen (additional booking fees would be incurred if the hotel books for you as opposed to hailing one along the streets) which is ok but when you need it too often (because it can get really dark at night on the route without street lights), it’s additional costs to factor in. Having said that, it is a peaceful place to be with the mountain view at the back of the hotel. Free drinks were provided and I like the spacious dining / living area which is really good for groups to have debrief. Hotel staff were also really helpful in giving recommendations for food as restaurants tend to close quite early and they also helped me to call a cab on my last day."

"You’ll need taxi or car to go to Rakuten Stay if you bring suitcase, as Nikko don’t have a well pedestrian walk and it’s a bit hard if you pull your luggage by yourself. The check-in process quiet confusing as there’s no reception and the easiest way is to call the Rakuten Stay straight away and ask room number and door passcode and you can do the check-in process inside your room. The room is really nice and it’s huge, we even get our own onsen which is really nice. The price also not that expensive, compare to hotel room if you’re more than 2 people. Overall really enjoy my stay despite the confusing check-in, but the help center really assist me patiently"

"Having read both the good and bad reviews, I visited with mixed expectations and trepidation. I figured a few things would be ok, considering the price included two meals and it was a weekend during the autumn foliage season, but I was pleasantly surprised. The owner's service was simply wonderful. He was polite, kind, and humorous, and he even gave me information about traffic congestion and recommended local spots. The hotel itself wasn't new, but it was well-maintained, and there was an open-air bath in my room, so although I didn't try out the outdoor baths, the bath was nice. The only problem I had was that I had to walk up and down quite a few stairs to get to my room, and wearing slippers and socks made it difficult to walk. All the food was delicious, too. I'd definitely stay at this hotel again if I visit Nikko."

"This is an absolutely fantastic hotel, definitely a 5/5! The staff were incredibly helpful and provided excellent service. The location is perfect, and the facilities are comprehensive. The food was delicious, especially the dinner buffet which even featured crab legs. The ambiance was wonderful. You could easily spend your entire trip just enjoying the hotel, and it would be thoroughly worthwhile. It offers incredible value for money; the quality far exceeds the reasonable price. We've stayed here many times, and each visit has been consistently impressive. We've never been disappointed and will definitely be back again. We genuinely love this hotel!"

"The hotel's location is fantastic, right across from the JR station and very close to Tobu Nikko Station. A bus stop is also just a two-minute walk away, offering great convenience. The hotel environment is quite pleasant. The lobby isn't luxurious but is tastefully decorated, and the staff speak English. They thoughtfully provide toiletries like makeup remover and facial cleanser, which is very convenient. Complimentary afternoon beverages are also a nice perk. The room size was acceptable, and it was cleaned well. However, there was a noticeable urine smell in the bathroom; I couldn't tell if it was from the drainage system or due to the building's age. Also, bottled water was not provided in the room, and there was no humidifier."

Amazing
GGuest UserThe room was spacious, the bed was comfortable, and the view was great. The free cocktail and coffee services in the lobby were nice, as well as the free drink bar (including one beer per person) near the entrance to the hot spring. The paid massage service was also good. The meals were decent, especially the grilled beef, which simply melted in my mouth. The restaurant staff welcomed us warmly and provided friendly service. Cons: The variety of hot springs was lacking, and the view from the hot springs was almost blocked, which was disappointing. The lockers for valuables used combination dials, and foreign guests often didn’t know how to use them, locking their room keys inside and struggling to reopen them. This was a major inconvenience. They should switch to a key-and-wristband system like other onsen hotels. The room itself felt like an old, once-grand mansion that had seen better days. The furniture had many scratches, and the surfaces were worn and peeling. It made me think it must have been impressive in the past. Still, the room was definitely more spacious compared to other hotels.

AAnonymous UserThe hotel is about 20 minutes away from Kinugawa Onsen Station. We arrived in the morning and there was no shuttle bus to the hotel. We waited for a while at the taxi station but there was no car, so we walked to the hotel. It is recommended to tell the hotel the arrival time and ask the hotel to book a taxi. When leaving, we booked a shuttle bus in advance. The shuttle bus fee is 300 yen per person. The hot spring in the hotel is comfortable, and the dinner is a buffet, which is very rich.

Jjlow123Most of the reviews are outdated so I thought I'd give an updated review. For one thing, there is WiFi (I have informed the landlady that the website indicates otherwise). This place is a traditional-style inn. You'll be sleeping in a futon (some Google-fu should help you know how to use one), use two pairs of slippers (one for moving around the house, one exclusively for the toilet) and will also bathe in a Japanese-style shared bathroom. The front gate and bathroom close at 10pm, which is not an issue as everywhere in Nikko closes early and it's too dark to hike outdoors (in early Autumn). We loved using the onsen to relax after a day of strolling around and hiking, and the delicious Japanese-style breakfast was lovingly prepared by a friendly old granny. The premises are old but well-maintained. Toilets, bathroom and onsen were great but we were there during off-peak season so we didn't need to share so much. Should we return to Nikko, this place will be our first choice!

RRosie33The bunk bed was so large compare to average bed size with comfy and clean blanket and sheet. There is personal locker with key, lamp, charge station, body and face towel, slipper, and free flow kimono and amenities. The soap, shampoo, body lotion, and face wash are provided. I think it is super fantastic compared to the cheap price. We can use public onsen (male and females are in different rooms so it is so convenient). From 15.00-22.00, in the Lake-View Lounge, we can drink and eat snacks for free: all kinds of alcohol, various soft drinks machines, coffee machines, beer, ice, tea, etc. So fantastic!!!!! There are library and game corners as well. This hotel is just across the Chuzenji Lake, 900m from Kegon lake. There is one and only convenient store (10mins by walk from hotel) which is open 08.00-20.00. Even though there are view restaurants nearby, however, you must be aware that food here is quite difficult to access. Restaurants mostly close as early as 3 or 4 pm. I will definitely come here again.

HHoSVery old school ryokan run by very friendly who has been working there for many years. Your name will be displayed on the board next to the entrance of the ryokan to show that they were currently welcoming these guests staying at the ryokan! We stayed there for 2 nights with free parking and we didn’t have to drive anywhere until we checked out as the ryokan is within walking distance to the 3 major world heritage listed shrines including The Toshogu Palace. Avoid room 312 or 313 (which we stayed) which are the smallest rooms. Those rooms in the middle parts are bigger and more comfortable. Do ask for any room facing the back of the ryokan and avoid those facing the front where you only see car parks with coaches coming in the morning bringing tourists to the shrines. The onsite Onsen for ryokan guests, breakfasts and dinners are the highlights. You’d love the traditional Japanese meals served there and you won’t be hungry. Would I come back to this ryokan again? Yes definitely due to its location and friendly staff.

GGuest UserThe exterior of the hotel is pretty, but the interior of the hotel is dated and needs a bit of updating. There were parts of the hotel that were completely shut down (maybe there are saving up enough money to one day renovate). However the facilities and rooms are well maintained and the onsens are beautiful and peaceful. There are 2 main onsens, that are separated by men and women. Each day the onsens are switched, in the morning you will go to one, and in the evening before dinner you can experience the other onsen. Onsite there is a really nice restaurant and gift shop that featured local products at reasonable prices. There is a 24 hour coffee/tea station that is free to use. It's a short 10 minute walk from Kinugawa Onsen Station. When you arrive they provide you a yukata to wear while you are staying at the hotel. The rooms are spacious with options for a western bed or japanese style (sleeping on the floor). We opted for the western bed to be higher off the ground as we thought it would be colder to sleep on the ground. Although the rooms are very well heated and was a bit too warm, that we needed to open the window to cool the room down. The rooms have nice views of the countryside. They provide a pitcher of ice water in the room and you can go to the front desk to refill with ice if more is needed. The bathroom is quite large and has both a shower and toilet in a separate room of the bathroom; although we mostly bathed in the onsen. There is a 7-eleven nearby that was open 24 hours, but otherwise there isn't much else around the hotel. Also the town of Kinugawa Onsen closes quite early, around 8pm it's quite deserted. We were there at the end of November 2024, and it seemed that the hotel was mostly unoccupied, so we felt like we had the place to ourselves. It was a very nice one night stay.

GGuest UserThe impressions are the most rosy. About the pros: 1. The hotel looks well-kept and new. The room is large, with a balcony, toilet with shower, there is a mini-bar, tea accessories, pajamas, yukatas, everything is in place. Small gifts. Everything was very nice. There is a coffee machine in the lobby area, you can take books to read, there is a souvenir shop. 2. Warm attitude during the serving of food, especially during dinner. The taste of the food and the quality for me were excellent. As a foreigner unfamiliar with the traditions of the cuisine, we are grateful for the opportunity to touch the culinary microclimate of the region. Although I understand that my opinion cannot be considered expert. 3. A good area with onsen. There is an indoor pool and rotenburo, there is no need to bring towels from the room. There is a small common lounge area with drinks and ice cream. Minor minuses: 1. If you go to the hotel by taxi, it takes you to a gravel path, and then you calmly get there by walking a little to the official entrance of the hotel. But if you walk, and it's about 20 minutes from the station, then knowing that you went through a more convenient service entrance, the detour to the main entrance will seem strange, although in the end it has its own charm. 2. The service at the entrance to the hotel seems a little blurry. Especially after the service in the same restaurant. But we arrived late in the evening, so it is likely that everyone was just tired by the time we arrived. 3. The hotel held a lecture on our evening, but it was in Japanese. Although I do not see a mechanism by which it could be made more accessible. Hiring a translator who would translate into English for a couple of foreigners is strange. Conducting it in English when most of the guests were Japanese is wrong. The hotel is not cheap, but I think it is worth the money. I highly recommend it.

TTsusiefirst of I would like to thanks always trip.com for very nice & convinient bookings everytime,we stay new sakura hotel, because the interior of the hotel is mostly sakura theme, the carpet, the gorgeous chandelier, the wall design, etc.or cherry blossom in Japan,& so very affordable prize,we spend only 18,000 yen for 2 adults, with 2 breakfast & 2 dinner.Very near from kinugawa onsen station, only 3 hrs.from Tokyo. We amazed the room,so very big for the two of us,for very cheap prize, can accomodate even 10 person, the buffet breakfast & dinner also is so good but the most I want to share is the drink all you can alcohol beverages for 1 hour, like beer, japanese wine, sours, all kinds of softhdrinks,I enjoyed for self service alcohol drink all you can!the hotspring also is very good but the cons is take care in the outdoor spring because of the concrete stairs, especially for the elderly when slippery, there's & a little bit far from our room, the young staff also at the counter is nice & most of them are young japanese lady,so very entertaining,so many free amusement like billiard, majong, etc.with a nice sorrounding sightseeng site.& last after check out they give 2000 yen discount coupon for the next visit,Thanks God & trip.com for a nice autumn tour moment in kinugawa onsen Tochigi Perfecture Japan

玩转星球-KevinThe most important buffet dinner during the stay was served very late, and the dishes were often empty, which is very rare in Japan. Because it was less than 700 yuan and included two meals, although the hotel had many flaws, it was understandable, but the faucet in the room seemed to be broken, and the water flow was not smooth, which should be replaced. Overall, this room was acceptable.
