10246 reviewsMy husband and I were there. We chose a departure point at 8:30 AM, which was easy to find, right outside the metro. We went on October 2nd (Chinese national holiday week). They say it takes about 1.5 hours to get to this section of the wall if there's no traffic, but it's actually 1.5 hours from the last meeting point, which is 9:30 AM. We left at 8:30 AM and didn't arrive until 12:40 PM, due to heavy traffic. We initially didn't understand what the "transfer" meant inside, but it turns out that's where buses depart and take you to the beginning of the wall. As we understood it, there are two routes: red and green. The red route requires you to take the funicular up and then walk for about 1.5 hours to Tower 23, then back to the funicular and down. Funiculars are very fast. The green route requires you to take the funicular up, which we understood is a walk, and then the descent is downhill. We were taken back by bus to the nearest metro station; the ride took two and a half hours. We were in Boris's group. The journey was grueling, but the view on the wall was incredibly beautiful.

A great place, though the two-hour wait in line for security spoiled the experience a bit. Surprisingly, the square wasn't crowded. It's a landmark in China, like Red Square in Russia.

If you come to Beijing and don't visit Tiananmen Square, you're missing out big time! It's like the heart of Beijing, bringing together major landmarks from all four directions. It's a vast, expansive square. Getting into the square is incredibly difficult, requiring passing through many security checkpoints. But once you're inside, you'll realize just how massive it is—everything seems twice the scale! And you absolutely can't miss the entrance gate to the Forbidden City, adorned with statues of important Chinese leaders. You have to stop and take a picture there! 😘

Tiananmen Square is quite magnificent overall, but it's not a must-see. You can visit it before going to the Forbidden City. Chairman Mao can't be seen there, so you don't need to go specifically; just look at the exterior of the buildings.
(Although I didn't go to the Forbidden City, if you want to go, remember to refresh the official website seven days in advance to get tickets. Don't be like me and only try to go when you arrive; you can't get tickets at all.)

Buying a freshly fried rice cake, dipping it in brown sugar, and enjoying its warm, sweet, and soft texture, while squeezing into the crowd to listen to a few lines of opera—even if you don't understand the tune—feels lively and welcoming, full of the warmth and life of everyday life, and your heart feels a sense of joy and celebration.

I was in Beijing during the October holidays. I bought a combination ticket. Everything was fine; you could walk everywhere, and they sent an audio guide with information about the buildings. One suggestion for the future: since the entrance was on the east side, it would have been more convenient to have the audio guide and the map of the sites described from the entrance side. I ended up getting confused about which audio tracks were which.

A very large park. We were there on October 1, 2026, and there were a lot of people, but overall we were prepared for it. There weren't any lines as such, just a continuous stream of people, but thank God there was plenty of room to walk. It's best to spend the whole day there.

This was a great way to experience the Summer Palace on our first visit. The tour guide explained everything well and patiently walked us around. He showed us many neat things and even the kids were engaged.

Located in the northwestern suburbs of Beijing, the Summer Palace is the largest and best-preserved imperial garden in China. Its predecessor was the Qingyi Garden, built by Emperor Qianlong to honor his mother. It was later burned down by the Anglo-French allied forces. During the Guangxu era, Empress Dowager Cixi misappropriated naval funds for a large-scale reconstruction and renamed it "Summer Palace" as her retirement residence. It skillfully blends the gentle beauty of the Jiangnan water towns (such as West Lake in Hangzhou) with the grandeur of northern imperial architecture, earning it the reputation of a "museum of imperial gardens."
Garden Layout and Key Attractions: The Summer Palace covers an area of 2.9 square kilometers (approximately 40 times the size of Prince Gong's Mansion!), with water accounting for three-quarters of its area. The Summer Palace is primarily composed of two main areas: Longevity Hill and Kunming Lake.
