Which Cruise Lines Sail from Sydney?
Sydney is a major cruise port, so pretty much every major cruise line you'd want to sail with operates cruises from here. This is one of the world's largest natural harbours, after all. Here are some cruise lines to have on your radar:
- Carnival Cruise Line: Carnival Cruise Line operates their vessels Carnival Adventure and Carnival Splendor, with year-round departures from Sydney. If you're familiar with cruise lines and are wondering where P&O Australia went, it was folded into the Carnival brand in March of 2025.
- Royal Caribbean: Big-ship cruising to the South Pacific and New Zealand, typically over the peak season from October to April. Royal Caribbean is also opening Lelepa, its private island destination in Vanuatu, in 2027.
- Princess Cruises: One of the biggest cruise lines operating from Sydney, offering dozens of itineraries that cover everywhere from the South Pacific and New Zealand to far-away destinations such as Southeast Asia and Hawaii..
- Cunard: The famous Queens call into Sydney each summer on their world voyages, and you can book one-way sectors departing Sydney, anything from a few weeks to Singapore or Hong Kong up to the full run home to Southampton. If you want white-glove ocean liner tradition sailing out past the Opera House, this is it.
- Celebrity Cruises: Premium ships like Celebrity Edge running New Zealand and South Pacific itineraries over the Australian summer.
- Luxury and boutique lines: Viking, Holland America, Oceania, Silversea, Regent, Seabourn and Norwegian all call at or turn around in Sydney, mostly on longer or seasonal voyages.

Sydney Cruise Terminals: Circular Quay and White Bay
Sydney has two cruise terminals, one at Circular Quay, and the other at White Bay, a 15-minute drive away. If you need to get your bearings first, make sure to check out our detailed article on Sydney Maps.
Circular Quay Cruise Terminal (Overseas Passenger Terminal)
Most Sydney cruises leave from the Overseas Passenger Terminal (OPT) at Circular Quay, right on the harbour in The Rocks. Trains, ferries and buses all meet here, so you can step off public transport and almost straight up the gangway. If you've got a spare morning either side of your sailing, a whale watching cruise or simply a ferry ride from Circular Quay is another good way to get out on the water before or after your cruise.
Getting there:
- Circular Quay Station is what to aim for on the train (the airport train terminates here) or the ferries if you’re coming via the harbour. From the station, head north along George Street in the direction of the Harbour Bridge (it’s hard to miss!). It’s about a 5- to 10-minute walk from the station. - There's no onsite parking at the OPT on cruise days, so I’d recommend using public transport wherever possible. Otherwise, you’ll need to use a nearby secure parking garage or on street parking, but if you’re departing on a longer cruise, I’d be worried about the cost.
- Drop offs are limited to just two minutes outside the terminal.
The bonus of sailing from the OPT is the send-off. You’re right beneath the Harbour Bridge and you’ll pull out past the Opera House, two of the most famous sights in Australia. Surely this is one of the best cruise departure points in the world.
Getting away:
Once you’re returning from your cruise, note that you'll have to head up to Level 3 of the OPT to catch a taxi home. Pick-ups are in the same area as drop-offs.

White Bay Cruise Terminal
The White Bay cruise terminal sits at James Craig Road in Rozelle, in Sydney's Inner West, and it handles the ships small enough to fit under the Harbour Bridge. That in of itself is a good selling point, as sailing under the Harbour Bridge is a bucket-list item for many Sydney visitors.
It's a modern, well-run terminal, but it's in an industrial port area with no train station nearby, so you’ll have to arrive by car or a taxi.
- On Cruise days, to reduce the impact of traffic, vehicle access is available from The Crescent and James Craig Road; see the map below.
- The terminal is about a 10-minute ride from the CBD, and 30 to 45 minutes from the airport (taxis operate a $60 fixed fare into Sydney).
It's a cool little terminal once you're inside (it won a World Architecture Festival award, of all things), but give yourself extra time on the way there. There are check-in desks, a cafe, toilets, and seating, but no shops or restaurants around it.

Generally, a short cruise is thought of anywhere from 2 to 5 night sailings. Some are a "cruise to nowhere" style break where the ship is the destination, others are themed sailings built around music, comedy or food, and then there are the more classic ones exploring the Aussie coastline—including seasonal Sydney whale watching cruises that offer incredible ocean encounters without even needing an overnight stay. A popular longer run is to Moreton Island off the coast of Brisbane and back.
Carnival runs the most of them, with Royal Caribbean and Princess adding short getaways between their longer itineraries. Prices start surprisingly low; 3-night getaways regularly appear from around AUD 440 to 480 per person twin share for an interior cabin, which is pretty good bang for your buck.
For anyone who hasn’t cruised before, this is where I’d recommend starting. A long weekend at sea—or even a quick whale-watching trip through Sydney Heads—will tell you very quickly whether ship life is your thing, and if it is, the South Pacific is waiting.

The scheduled time was four hours, but the time flew by. There was a very decent buffet, an unexpectedly large selection, and all the essentials. The staff was very friendly, but that's not the most important part of the trip. The main thing was that we managed to see three whales, and it was an incredible experience. Of course, I imagined they would be closer or jumping like a circus 😅, but this isn't a waterway, so it was truly captivating and unforgettable when the whales actually showed up! Amazing whale-watching experience in Sydney! 🐋I really enjoyed this experience from start to finish. The scenery and the whole environment were absolutely beautiful, and we were lucky enough to see a lot of whales! It was amazing watching them in their natural environment, and the experience was even better than I expected. I booked the cheapest twin room on the 26th floor, offering a direct view of the Bell Tower from above. The room was incredibly spacious, probably over 50 square meters, and even had a bathtub. It’s in a good location at Darling Harbour. It’s very accessible to both harbour area and central business district, but at the same time it is situated along a relatively quiet street. The train station is 5-10 minutes away. Our room was spacious and there’s a water station per floor. Staff were friendly and helpful.

The hotel's amenities are really subpar; it's nothing like a 4-star hotel. Sofitel properties in China are much better configured. I stayed at their hotels in Sydney and Gold Coast this trip, and I definitely won't be staying with this brand again. The bathroom sink was like something out of a hostel – small, single basin, and so low and shallow that when you wash your face or hands, water splashes all over your waist and stomach. We arrived quite late on the first day, and the air conditioning wasn't central, it was very noisy, and the fridge also made a lot of noise. Plus, we were at the end of a hallway. I contacted Ctrip customer service; we couldn't switch rooms on the second day, but they moved us on the third. However, in the new room, the toilet seat didn't have a soft-close mechanism, so it would either slam shut or just fall down. The towels were placed on a tiny shelf – I don't know if that's a deliberate design choice by the hotel? Anyway, it's hard to put into words… all the rooms are at the end of hallways. I absolutely will not stay at any Sofitel brand hotels again… This is my second time in Australia this year, and it's winter, the off-season. Hotel prices were higher than what I booked in February, and my experiences in Gold Coast and Sydney were disappointing… Cairns was even worse, essentially a hostel-level hotel by Chinese standards, with twin beds less than 1 meter wide each… When booking a hotel, it really has to be an international brand, but Sofitel is a chain, and the one in Sydney was truly bad…FromAU$ 281

I stayed for five nights, and the hotel's location is excellent. Everything listed below is within a 10-minute walk: Sydney's bustling pedestrian streets, QVB (Queen Victoria Building) for shopping, luxury stores near Sydney Tower, Circular Quay ⛵️, Darling Harbour, museums, art galleries, the Botanical Garden, and Sydney University… all very close. A taxi to the Fish Market cost 33 AUD and took 8 minutes. Alternatively, it's a 30-minute walk. The only downside to the room was its size; with two suitcases, there was hardly any space to move. There were no slippers or toothbrushes, but these could be obtained from the front desk; we brought our own. There are several convenience stores downstairs. In Sydney, convenience stores without a liquor license cannot sell alcohol, so if you want a drink, head to a bar or buy alcohol beforehand from a licensed store to avoid searching later. We found one such store at Circular Quay. Manly Beach is accessible from Circular Quay and offers beautiful scenery. Dining: Breakfast is a small buffet, and each person can order one main dish. The restaurant offers à la carte dinner service; it's not busy, so no reservation is needed.

The hotel is conveniently located, close to the beach and a popular coffee shop. The service is good and the food is good.
Except for the two rooms where the automatic curtains could not be opened and took a long time to repair (probably because the hotel is not new after all, but it can be seen that the maintenance is quite good), and Ctrip booked the wrong room type, the rest is generally OK.

My stay at The Pod Sydney was generally positive, especially considering I was traveling solo and staying in a mixed dorm.
The Location deserves a perfect 5/5. It is truly exceptional—right in the heart of the city and just steps away from public transport, making it incredibly easy to get to all the main attractions.
Cleanliness was also very good (4/5). The common areas and bathrooms were well-maintained and tidy.
However, I rated both Service and Facilities as Okay (3/5). While the staff was courteous, the check-in process felt a bit slow, and I didn't feel the communal facilities truly stood out. For instance, the common room felt small for the number of guests.

The location is in the middle of the CBD and it is convenient to go to the sights. The room is a bit old and the WIFI signal is weak. The elevator has to manually open and close the door. The elevator has to open the door once and the floor of the first floor is not aligned. It is necessary to bend over and step on the way, which is terrible! Be careful of safety incidents.
