Sydney Maps: Which Ones Do You Actually Need?
There are three key maps that you’ll want to have handy when exploring Sydney. The first is a Sydney tourist map to get your bearings and see where the main areas and attractions are in relation to one another. Then, two different transport maps: a train and metro map for moving between the inner and outer suburbs, and a ferry map for travelling across Darling Harbour and crossing out to the coast.
Whenever I’m visiting the city, I’ll always make sure to have a Sydney tourist map in my backpack for the day, and will plan out my route on the train or ferries before I leave my hotel.

Sydney CBD Map: Key Areas
Sydney’s CBD is compact and walkable, and most of what a first-timer plans around sits within it or a short ferry or tram ride away. For first timers in the city, I recommend staying in the CBD or Circular Quay, which gives you easy access to all of Sydney’s major attractions and suburbs.
City Centre (CBD)
In Australia, the city centres are called the CBD, which stands for Central Business District. In Sydney’s CBD, George Street is the major thoroughfare, with Town Hall and the Queen Victoria Building in the middle and Martin Place a block east.
Circular Quay and The Rocks
At the top of the CBD sits Circular Quay, one of the busiest transport hubs in the city. Ferries, trains and trams all stop here. You're only a few minutes' walk to both the Opera House and the The Rocks, Sydney’s most historic neighbourhood and an area well worth visiting.
Darling Harbour and Barangaroo
West side of the CBD. Darling Harbour is the family and waterfront-dining zone, home to attractions like the SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium, the Maritime Museum, and more. Just north of here is Barangaroo, a newer harbourside precinct filled with restaurants and bars.
Bondi and the Eastern Beaches
Southeast of the city is Sydney’s most famous stretch of coast, with Bondi Beach, Bronte and Coogee all linked by a stunning coastal walk. Note that this area isn’t within walking distance of Sydney’s CBD; instead, you’ll need to take the train.
Inner West (Newtown, Glebe, Surry Hills)
South and west of Central. These are trendy suburbs, home to some of the city’s best coffee and food, and a slightly less polished vibe than the CBD and Circular Quay. Again, not really within walking distance of the CBD, but there are excellent public transport links.

Sydney Train and Metro Map

A Sydney Train map will help you get your bearings on the wider city. There are nine suburban lies, all labelled with a T (T1 to T9), and nearly all of them pass through Central, the main interchange.
For a visitor, the three that matter most are:
- T1 North Shore line: Double-decker trains with harbour views crossing toward the northern shore
- T4 Eastern Suburbs and Illawarra line: From the CBD, this line (this is how you reach Bondi Junction for the Bondi buses)
- T8 Airport line: Trains run from 5am to midnight between the centre and both Sydney International Airport and Sydney Domestic Airport.
Sydney Metro is the newer, driverless service on the M1 line. Right now it runs from Tallawong in the northwest, through the CBD (Barangaroo, Martin Place, Gadigal and Central), and out to Sydenham, across 21 stations. It is fast and turns up every few minutes, so if your stop is on the metro, take it over the train.

Sydney’s ferry routes are both a great way to get around the city and also a nice way for some harbour sightseeing. Whenever I’m in town, one of my favourite things to do is to take the ferry out to Manly from Circular Quay.
All ferries leave from the central Circular Quay's wharves. There are ten numbered routes:
- F1 Manly
- F2 Taronga Zoo
- F3 Parramatta River
- F4 Pyrmont Bay
- F5 Neutral Bay
- F6 Mosman Bay
- F7 Double Bay
- F8 Cockatoo Island
- F9 Watsons Bay
- F10 Blackwattle Bay
The F1 to Manly is the one I recommend to every first-timer travelling to Sydney. It leaves from Circular Quay Wharf 3 and takes about 30 minutes, heading out past the Opera House and Fort Denison toward the harbour before reaching Manly Wharf. A second, faster route is also available, taking just 20 minutes and leaving from Wharf 2.
Either way, this is one of the best things you can do on the water: you’ll have fantastic views of the Opera House and Harbour Bridge, and end your journey in beautiful Manly, a cool little place with a wonderful beach, great restaurants, and a more relaxed vibe than the busy CBD.

Sydney Light Rail Map
Rounding out the public transport options in Sydney is the Light Rail, which are trams and marked with an L. This service is best for short hops inside the CBD and just south of it. There are three lines:
- L1 Dulwich Hill: Central through Darling Harbour, The Star and Pyrmont out to the Inner West. This is your line for the Sydney Fish Market and Darling Harbour.
- L2 Randwick and L3 Kingsford: both run from Circular Quay down the George Street pedestrian boulevard through Town Hall and Central, then split for the southeast. Handy for Surry Hills and Moore Park.

How to Navigate Sydney
Getting around Sydney is easy once you know which mode does what. The CBD and its immediate surrounds are genuinely walkable, and for everything past that the network has you covered:
- Train: the workhorse for longer trips, the airport, and reaching Bondi Junction for the beach buses.
- Metro: the fastest option where it runs, from the north-west through the CBD to Sydenham.
- Ferry: the harbour runs, and the nicest way out to Manly or Taronga Zoo.
- Light rail: short hops down George Street and out to Darling Harbour and the Inner West.
- Bus: fills in the gaps the rail lines miss, including the last little stretch down to Bondi Beach itself.
- Taxi and rideshare: easiest for the airport with luggage, or getting home late.
All of it runs on Opal, and this is the part that surprises first-timers: you don't need a physical card or a tourist pass. Just tap on and off with a contactless Visa, Mastercard or Amex, or your phone, using the same card the whole trip. Fares are worked out by distance, and daily and weekly caps put a ceiling on what you'll pay no matter how much you ride.

Top Things to Do in Sydney
You will find the postcard landmarks exactly where you expect them around the harbour, making it easy to tick off more than one major highlight a day.
- Sydney Opera House: right at Circular Quay. Walk up for free; book a tour to go inside.
- Sydney Harbour Bridge and BridgeClimb: the climb is the headline experience; the walk across the pedestrian path is free.
- Bondi Beach and the Bondi to Coogee walk: T4 train to Bondi Junction, then a bus. The coastal walk is the highlight, not just the sand.
- Taronga Zoo: the F2 ferry gets you there with views of the harbour.
- Darling Harbour: SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium, the Maritime Museum and the waterfront dining, all walkable and tram-linked.
For first timers in the city, these are all worthwhile things to see before you leave! I would also really recommend prioritising the Bondi to Coogee walk, one of the most spectacular coastal paths in the whole country.

Services: overall are good, I’ve been staying meriton many times in many locations, but this one Meriton on Kent was disappointing. I’ve asked baby amenities before my trip start but never got any as they promised they’ve been noted and prepared.
Special note: at the checked in they gave us a small room facing loud street and construction site( we booked a higher price of room and staying 5 nights)。
They had originally agreed to change our room. However, due to a communication gap among the staff the next day, it took quite a long time to resolve the misunderstanding before the room change was finally completed.

I booked the cheapest twin room on the 26th floor, offering a direct view of the Bell Tower from above. The room was incredibly spacious, probably over 50 square meters, and even had a bathtub. While the furniture was quite basic, the front desk service was absolutely excellent. I also visited the gym. The building itself is a former Sydney Post Office, so many people come to take photos. The hotel's location is indeed great, right by Darling Harbour with plenty of dining options nearby. However, the cleanliness was a bit subpar. Even after leaving a note asking for fresh towels, they only provided one clean towel for a double room. There was no weighing scale in the room, and the body lotion in the bathroom was empty – I had to write a note to get it replaced. Overall, my impression is just average. The location is a big plus – it's a short walk to Circular Quay and the Sydney Opera House, and super convenient for shopping. The building itself reminds me of Shanghai's Wukang Mansion. There was some construction nearby, but it didn't disturb my sleep at night. I especially have to commend the service; check-in and check-out were both very warm and welcoming. On a rainy day when I was heading to the airport, they were so thoughtful and helped load my luggage into the car to keep me from getting wet. The fireworks at Darling Harbour were absolutely stunning, and our room faced Darling Harbour directly. The kids basically lived on the balcony, doing homework, watching fireworks, and eating – they called it the best hotel of the trip. Personally, I found the room a bit small; once we opened our two 28-inch suitcases, there was no space left. Also, the lighting was a bit dim and lacked brightness. Breakfast was quite Western-style, good quality but with limited variety. The kids were quite sad when they realized there was no ice cream, no chocolate fountain, no dessert bar, and no self-service juice (compared to the Crown in Melbourne and Langham where we stayed). But as parents, we were thrilled! Less sugar intake, and the fruits and yogurt were excellent quality. The eggs used for omelets and Eggs Benedict were organic. The downside is that it's a bit far from the subway station, and the walk back to the hotel area at night felt a little dark. My biggest complaint is that in the morning, the kids left a cup on the breakfast table, and when we checked out, they wouldn't even look for it, claiming the breakfast bar staff had gone off duty. The hotel's amenities are really subpar; it's nothing like a 4-star hotel. Sofitel properties in China are much better configured. I stayed at their hotels in Sydney and Gold Coast this trip, and I definitely won't be staying with this brand again. The bathroom sink was like something out of a hostel – small, single basin, and so low and shallow that when you wash your face or hands, water splashes all over your waist and stomach. We arrived quite late on the first day, and the air conditioning wasn't central, it was very noisy, and the fridge also made a lot of noise. Plus, we were at the end of a hallway. I contacted Ctrip customer service; we couldn't switch rooms on the second day, but they moved us on the third. However, in the new room, the toilet seat didn't have a soft-close mechanism, so it would either slam shut or just fall down. The towels were placed on a tiny shelf – I don't know if that's a deliberate design choice by the hotel? Anyway, it's hard to put into words… all the rooms are at the end of hallways. I absolutely will not stay at any Sofitel brand hotels again… This is my second time in Australia this year, and it's winter, the off-season. Hotel prices were higher than what I booked in February, and my experiences in Gold Coast and Sydney were disappointing… Cairns was even worse, essentially a hostel-level hotel by Chinese standards, with twin beds less than 1 meter wide each… When booking a hotel, it really has to be an international brand, but Sofitel is a chain, and the one in Sydney was truly bad…FromAU$ 249

The room was very pleasant, with new, clean furniture and high-quality plumbing. It had all the conveniences, such as a kettle, iron, and ironing board. The air conditioning and water worked perfectly, and the room was warm and comfortable. There were no issues with soundproofing; you'd only hear neighbors if they opened their door or spoke loudly in the hallway.
On the ground floor, there are coffee machines where you can enjoy unlimited free coffee with milk, sugar, and cookies.
The location is convenient, close to cafes and restaurants, Darling Harbour, Chinatown, and bus and metro stops.
The staff was very courteous. Once, when the hotel elevator wasn't working, they compensated us with chocolates and water.

Booked a twin room with breakfast (including breakfast for two children) through Trip.com. The front desk initially claimed there was no breakfast, then gave us a room on the lowest floor. When checking out, it was pouring rain, and we had a ton of luggage, plus elderly and children. The concierge not only didn't help with an umbrella, but was also hesitant about lending one for us to get to the car.
I called the hotel's customer service through Trip.com, and the breakfast issue was resolved. As for the other 'software' aspects, it's really an issue of quality for an old five-star hotel. Chinese guests booking through Trip.com likely face discrimination and difficulties at this hotel.
The location is on the row closest to the Opera House, facing the Harbour Bridge in the front and the Botanic Garden in the back. The surroundings are right in the heart of the tourist hustle, but I personally prefer the garden view side. Breakfast is purely Continental, a la carte.FromAU$ 434

Location: The hotel's location is absolutely fantastic! It's super convenient to get everywhere, whether by walking, train, bus, or light rail. Coming from the airport, you just get off at the subway station, cross the road, and you're there – so easy even with luggage. 👍
Environment: The room is spacious, and the bathroom is also quite large, plus it even has a walk-in closet. I initially booked a one-bedroom apartment here for just two nights as a stopover before moving to the Shangri-La. However, my kids loved the apartment layout and the fact that we could cook. The space was surprisingly large and very clean. Unit 07 might be bigger than average, and it even has a huge balcony. While the decor is a bit older, the bathroom has a Japanese style, and all the corners were quite clean. We ended up extending our stay for three more nights, upgrading to a more expensive, newly renovated deluxe one-bedroom apartment. But it was clear that the older units were more spacious, and the new one just had newer facilities. The older apartment definitely offers better value for money. The Location deserves a perfect 5/5. It is truly exceptional—right in the heart of the city and just steps away from public transport, making it incredibly easy to get to all the main attractions.
Cleanliness was also very good (4/5). The common areas and bathrooms were well-maintained and tidy.
However, I rated both Service and Facilities as Okay (3/5). While the staff was courteous, the check-in process felt a bit slow, and I didn't feel the communal facilities truly stood out. For instance, the common room felt small for the number of guests.

First, the negatives. About half an hour after we checked in, a male staff member swiped his card and opened our room door. He said he was delivering hangers, but we hadn't requested any, so perhaps they were meant for another room and delivered by mistake. It was quite a shock regardless. I didn't report it to the staff during my stay, but afterwards, I made sure to double-lock the door every time I entered the room (before, I only locked it at night).
Now, for the positives. The location is excellent, very close to Central Station with many bus and light rail options nearby, making getting around super convenient. I stayed on the eighth floor, and while I could still hear traffic noise at night, which was a bit loud, the room's soundproofing was otherwise good, as I couldn't hear any noise from next door. On the plus side: we upgraded ourselves to a village suite and the size was spacious. Breakfast was fabulous and something to look forward to, although 7am start is a bit late for us.. Most of the staff were lovely and well trained. Room was cosy and quiet at night. Fresh towels and clean bathroom. Easy and convenient location outside of CBD. This is the only big hotel in the area and there are some great restaurants nearby - Carmela, Margaret, Bill’s etc. usefully close to Chemist Warehouse for essentials you’ve forgotten.
On the negative: It should be classed as 4* - quite cheaply constructed and maintained. Not what you might consider to be luxury. Rooms are dark, with poorly thought out lighting; the carpet rarely vacuumed (if at all) during our five night stay. Hand held shower head spray nozzles were blocked, bathtub drain was also blocked. Sinks not very clean. Windows in room and dining room very dirty. Big construction site adjacent so we moved rooms to get away from the noise and view of the cranes. Overpriced hotel offering when you consider we could have booked the Capella in CBD at nearly the same rate as our suite, but nice to be away from the city.FromAU$ 265

The apartment is a bit old and the cleanliness was just okay. Since our expectations were pretty low, we weren't surprised that no staff came to clean from check-in to check-out, so we had to clean it ourselves daily. The staff's service attitude was also quite mediocre. I really enjoyed my stay at The Sebel overall. The location is unbeatable (5/5)—right in Martin Place, making it perfect for getting around Sydney. The service was also great, and the room amenities were very comfortable.
However, I have to give the cleanliness a 3/5. While the room was generally tidy, there were some disappointing oversights. I noticed some blood on the bedsheet and a towel that appeared to have stains, looking like it hadn't been changed. It’s a shame because everything else about the hotel is fantastic.
