Sydney Maps: Which Ones Do You Actually Need?
There are three key maps that you’ll want to have handy when exploring Sydney. The first is a Sydney tourist map to get your bearings and see where the main areas and attractions are in relation to one another. Then, two different transport maps: a train and metro map for moving between the inner and outer suburbs, and a ferry map for travelling across Darling Harbour and crossing out to the coast.
Whenever I’m visiting the city, I’ll always make sure to have a Sydney tourist map in my backpack for the day, and will plan out my route on the train or ferries before I leave my hotel.

Sydney CBD Map: Key Areas
Sydney’s CBD is compact and walkable, and most of what a first-timer plans around sits within it or a short ferry or tram ride away. For first timers in the city, I recommend staying in the CBD or Circular Quay, which gives you easy access to all of Sydney’s major attractions and suburbs.
City Centre (CBD)
In Australia, the city centres are called the CBD, which stands for Central Business District. In Sydney’s CBD, George Street is the major thoroughfare, with Town Hall and the Queen Victoria Building in the middle and Martin Place a block east.
Circular Quay and The Rocks
At the top of the CBD sits Circular Quay, one of the busiest transport hubs in the city. Ferries, trains and trams all stop here. You're only a few minutes' walk to both the Opera House and the The Rocks, Sydney’s most historic neighbourhood and an area well worth visiting.
Darling Harbour and Barangaroo
West side of the CBD. Darling Harbour is the family and waterfront-dining zone, home to attractions like the SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium, the Maritime Museum, and more. Just north of here is Barangaroo, a newer harbourside precinct filled with restaurants and bars.
Bondi and the Eastern Beaches
Southeast of the city is Sydney’s most famous stretch of coast, with Bondi Beach, Bronte and Coogee all linked by a stunning coastal walk. Note that this area isn’t within walking distance of Sydney’s CBD; instead, you’ll need to take the train.
Inner West (Newtown, Glebe, Surry Hills)
South and west of Central. These are trendy suburbs, home to some of the city’s best coffee and food, and a slightly less polished vibe than the CBD and Circular Quay. Again, not really within walking distance of the CBD, but there are excellent public transport links.

Sydney Train and Metro Map

A Sydney Train map will help you get your bearings on the wider city. There are nine suburban lies, all labelled with a T (T1 to T9), and nearly all of them pass through Central, the main interchange.
For a visitor, the three that matter most are:
- T1 North Shore line: Double-decker trains with harbour views crossing toward the northern shore
- T4 Eastern Suburbs and Illawarra line: From the CBD, this line (this is how you reach Bondi Junction for the Bondi buses)
- T8 Airport line: Trains run from 5am to midnight between the centre and both Sydney International Airport and Sydney Domestic Airport.
Sydney Metro is the newer, driverless service on the M1 line. Right now it runs from Tallawong in the northwest, through the CBD (Barangaroo, Martin Place, Gadigal and Central), and out to Sydenham, across 21 stations. It is fast and turns up every few minutes, so if your stop is on the metro, take it over the train.

Sydney’s ferry routes are both a great way to get around the city and also a nice way for some harbour sightseeing. Whenever I’m in town, one of my favourite things to do is to take the ferry out to Manly from Circular Quay.
All ferries leave from the central Circular Quay's wharves. There are ten numbered routes:
- F1 Manly
- F2 Taronga Zoo
- F3 Parramatta River
- F4 Pyrmont Bay
- F5 Neutral Bay
- F6 Mosman Bay
- F7 Double Bay
- F8 Cockatoo Island
- F9 Watsons Bay
- F10 Blackwattle Bay
The F1 to Manly is the one I recommend to every first-timer travelling to Sydney. It leaves from Circular Quay Wharf 3 and takes about 30 minutes, heading out past the Opera House and Fort Denison toward the harbour before reaching Manly Wharf. A second, faster route is also available, taking just 20 minutes and leaving from Wharf 2.
Either way, this is one of the best things you can do on the water: you’ll have fantastic views of the Opera House and Harbour Bridge, and end your journey in beautiful Manly, a cool little place with a wonderful beach, great restaurants, and a more relaxed vibe than the busy CBD.

Sydney Light Rail Map
Rounding out the public transport options in Sydney is the Light Rail, which are trams and marked with an L. This service is best for short hops inside the CBD and just south of it. There are three lines:
- L1 Dulwich Hill: Central through Darling Harbour, The Star and Pyrmont out to the Inner West. This is your line for the Sydney Fish Market and Darling Harbour.
- L2 Randwick and L3 Kingsford: both run from Circular Quay down the George Street pedestrian boulevard through Town Hall and Central, then split for the southeast. Handy for Surry Hills and Moore Park.

How to Navigate Sydney
Getting around Sydney is easy once you know which mode does what. The CBD and its immediate surrounds are genuinely walkable, and for everything past that the network has you covered:
- Train: the workhorse for longer trips, the airport, and reaching Bondi Junction for the beach buses.
- Metro: the fastest option where it runs, from the north-west through the CBD to Sydenham.
- Ferry: the harbour runs, and the nicest way out to Manly or Taronga Zoo.
- Light rail: short hops down George Street and out to Darling Harbour and the Inner West.
- Bus: fills in the gaps the rail lines miss, including the last little stretch down to Bondi Beach itself.
- Taxi and rideshare: easiest for the airport with luggage, or getting home late.
All of it runs on Opal, and this is the part that surprises first-timers: you don't need a physical card or a tourist pass. Just tap on and off with a contactless Visa, Mastercard or Amex, or your phone, using the same card the whole trip. Fares are worked out by distance, and daily and weekly caps put a ceiling on what you'll pay no matter how much you ride.

Top Things to Do in Sydney
You will find the postcard landmarks exactly where you expect them around the harbour, making it easy to tick off more than one major highlight a day.
- Sydney Opera House: right at Circular Quay. Walk up for free; book a tour to go inside.
- Sydney Harbour Bridge and BridgeClimb: the climb is the headline experience; the walk across the pedestrian path is free.
- Bondi Beach and the Bondi to Coogee walk: T4 train to Bondi Junction, then a bus. The coastal walk is the highlight, not just the sand.
- Taronga Zoo: the F2 ferry gets you there with views of the harbour.
- Darling Harbour: SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium, the Maritime Museum and the waterfront dining, all walkable and tram-linked.
For first timers in the city, these are all worthwhile things to see before you leave! I would also really recommend prioritising the Bondi to Coogee walk, one of the most spectacular coastal paths in the whole country.

I booked the cheapest twin room on the 26th floor, offering a direct view of the Bell Tower from above. The room was incredibly spacious, probably over 50 square meters, and even had a bathtub. While the furniture was quite basic, the front desk service was absolutely excellent. I also visited the gym. The building itself is a former Sydney Post Office, so many people come to take photos. The hotel is located in Darling Harbour, just a 5-minute walk from the aquarium, zoo, and Madame Tussauds. The room clearly shows its age, but the unparalleled balcony view makes up for it, and it's spotlessly clean. The breakfast selection isn't huge, but there are plenty of fruit and bread options, fresh juice, and a good variety of coffee. The staff are very friendly and engaging!

I stayed at two Sofitels in Sydney during my Australia trip, and because I was so satisfied with the Sofitel Darling Harbour, I decided to book this downtown Sofitel after returning from Cairns. However, this turned out to be the biggest mistake of my two-week trip.
The hotel mainly uses self-check-in, with two counters in a corner for manual service. Check-in went smoothly enough, but the moment I opened my room door, I was stunned. The room was not the standard type I booked; it was tiny. I wasn't expecting a fancy view, but at least they shouldn't have given me the worst room in the hotel – the only internal-facing room on each floor, facing a large exhaust fan, and on the lowest floor! I couldn't help but wonder if I had offended someone. I called to request a room change and was told that the room type I booked was fully occupied for the night, with only a 'special room type' left on the 11th floor (a room designed for guests with disabilities). I said, 'Alright, at least it's a standard room.' So I started waiting for someone from the hotel to show me the room, but after nearly 10 minutes, no one came. Meanwhile, I noticed that the room type I originally booked was available on various platforms. So I went directly to the front desk to change rooms, and this time it was resolved smoothly. Finally, I was assigned the room type I had reserved. Although the room wasn't large, it certainly looked like a standard 5-star room.
Another thing I have to complain about is the hotel's front office service (excluding the concierge), which was practically non-existent. The so-called 'brand standard' clearly didn't apply to them. 1. There was no apology whatsoever for assigning such a bad room, and no genuine effort to resolve the issue. 2. I called for two forks, but by the time I checked out the next day, there was no sign of them. I've stayed in many 5-star hotels globally, and the housekeeping service here was arguably the most disappointing.
The breakfast, however, was quite good. While it's true, as other guests have mentioned, that there's often a long queue, we were seated quickly on the day we went. The breakfast selection was rich, and although the overall service efficiency wasn't very high, I considered it quite good for this hotel.From€ 171

Our flight was delayed and rebooked, causing us to arrive in Sydney a day late, landing in the early morning. We'd confirmed with the hotel in advance, and they assured us they'd hold our room for us. When we finally arrived at the hotel around 8 AM, the Chinese-speaking staff member at check-in proactively offered us a late check-out so we could relax a bit longer. As other reviews mentioned, the mini-bar was fully stocked and complimentary. We showered, had some drinks to refresh ourselves after the long journey, checked our luggage, and then headed off for our flight to Melbourne. The hotel's location is excellent, making it very convenient to get to the airport, and a taxi isn't expensive. When we took a taxi from the airport to the hotel, the friendly Black gentleman who opened the door (was he a doorman or security?) even asked how much we paid and confirmed the price was correct, which was really nice. The room was spacious. We returned from Melbourne and stayed for another five days, and every day was pleasant. It's incredibly convenient to get everywhere, with supermarkets and liquor stores all around. There's a rooftop terrace, a gym, and a small splash pool for kids. We stayed for 8 nights with our 3-year-old toddler, and it was a wonderful experience from start to finish.
Location: Perfect. We walked easily from the train station after arriving from Sydney Airport. The hotel is within a 10-minute walk to Darling Harbour, about 15 minutes to Wildlife Sydney and SEA LIFE, and right next to Darling Square park. Plus, Coles, Priceline, Chemist Warehouse, and everything else we needed were just minutes away.
Room layout: We booked a one-bedroom apartment with a living room, balcony, large kitchen, and lovely bathroom. The space was huge – ideal for a family. The dining table was a real bonus, and the kitchen had everything we needed. I was able to cook breakfast and dinner for our toddler each day, so we didn’t have to eat out every night. That saved us time, money, and hassle.
Service: Housekeeping came almost every day, and the customer service from the entire team was fantastic – everyone was so friendly and helpful.

This was our family's first trip to Australia and our first accommodation. The staff at Swissôtel Sydney were friendly, but it was a bit disappointing that we couldn't check in immediately when we arrived at the hotel around 2 PM. We were able to check in after waiting for about an hour, and the room was very comfortable and clean. The view wasn't bad either; I could see Sydney Tower when I looked up, and St Mary's Cathedral in the distance. I liked that the bathroom was spacious, had a bathtub, and was clean. The bedding was clean and comfortable, and the air conditioning could also be used for heating. The best part was the location. The location was incredibly convenient for getting to major attractions, and there were bus, tram, and subway stations all nearby. We could even walk to the Opera House, and there were many amenities like shopping malls and restaurants in the vicinity. In particular, the meeting point for the zoo tour was right across the street from the hotel, which was perfect since we had to gather early in the morning. First, the negatives. About half an hour after we checked in, a male staff member swiped his card and opened our room door. He said he was delivering hangers, but we hadn't requested any, so perhaps they were meant for another room and delivered by mistake. It was quite a shock regardless. I didn't report it to the staff during my stay, but afterwards, I made sure to double-lock the door every time I entered the room (before, I only locked it at night).
Now, for the positives. The location is excellent, very close to Central Station with many bus and light rail options nearby, making getting around super convenient. I stayed on the eighth floor, and while I could still hear traffic noise at night, which was a bit loud, the room's soundproofing was otherwise good, as I couldn't hear any noise from next door. Except for the two rooms where the automatic curtains could not be opened and took a long time to repair (probably because the hotel is not new after all, but it can be seen that the maintenance is quite good), and Ctrip booked the wrong room type, the rest is generally OK.

The apartment is a bit old and the cleanliness was just okay. Since our expectations were pretty low, we weren't surprised that no staff came to clean from check-in to check-out, so we had to clean it ourselves daily. The staff's service attitude was also quite mediocre. However, the location is incredibly convenient for getting anywhere; it's very close to the train station, museums, art galleries, and major shopping malls.Breakfast

I really enjoyed my stay at The Sebel overall. The location is unbeatable (5/5)—right in Martin Place, making it perfect for getting around Sydney. The service was also great, and the room amenities were very comfortable.
However, I have to give the cleanliness a 3/5. While the room was generally tidy, there were some disappointing oversights. I noticed some blood on the bedsheet and a towel that appeared to have stains, looking like it hadn't been changed. It’s a shame because everything else about the hotel is fantastic. If they paid a bit more attention to the housekeeping details, this would easily be a top-tier stay.From€ 117
