By James Taylor
October 12, 2026

Shanghai is a hugely popular destination with two airports, several rail services from both, and a city that stretches far beyond the famous waterfront. When you arrive from Australia, you’ll need to know how you’re going to get to the city.
This guide compares Shanghai airport transfer options from Pudong and Hongqiao, including costs, useful metro connections and what to do after a late landing. You’ll also find advice on booking a private car, paying for public transport and connecting to your next flight or high-speed train.

Shanghai Airport Transfers at a Glance
For most travellers arriving in Shanghai, the train will be the best option into the city. If you’re arriving in a larger group, with kids or several suitcases in tow, a pre-booked private transfer is your best choice.
Below, we’ve rounded up the different options available for getting into Shanghai from either Pudong International Airport (PVG) or Hongqiao International Airport (SHA). Note that Pudong is east of central Shanghai; Hongqiao is to the west and closer to the city centre.
Airport and option | Example journey time | Indicative cost | Best suited to |
Pudong: Metro Line 2 | About 1 hour to People’s Square | Around RMB7 / AU$1.50 per person | Travellers with manageable luggage and a hotel near a station |
Pudong: Maglev plus onward transport | About 8 minutes to Longyang Road, then an additional journey | RMB50 / AU$11 for the standard one-way Maglev ticket; onward travel extra | Travellers who want to experience the Maglev or are staying near Longyang Road |
Pudong: Taxi | About 50 minutes to People’s Square, depending on traffic | Official example: around RMB180 / AU$39 per vehicle | Direct hotel access without booking ahead |
Hongqiao: Metro | Depends on terminal, destination and connections | Distance-based fare | Hotels conveniently reached by Lines 2 or 10 |
Hongqiao: Taxi | Around 30 minutes to central Shanghai, depending on traffic | Official estimate: RMB100–150 / AU$21–32 per vehicle | A direct journey with luggage |
Either airport: Private transfer | Depends on destination and traffic | Check a quote for your route, date and vehicle | Families, groups and travellers who want an arranged pickup |
AUD amounts are rounded estimates using approximately AU$1 = RMB4.67, checked on 5 October 2026. Exchange rates and card fees can change.

Shanghai Pudong Airport to the City
If you’re arriving in Pudong Airport and looking to use public transport into the city, there are several different options.
Pudong Airport to City Centre | Metro Line 2
Metro Line 2 is the main low-cost rail option from Pudong Airport into central Shanghai. Both terminals at Pudong Airport are served by Line 2. For example, a ride from the airport to People’s Square costs approximately RMB7 (AU$1.50) and takes about an hour.
Here’s are some popular destinations you can reach via Line 2:
- People’s Square
- East Nanjing Road and the Bund
- Luijazui
- Jing’an Temple
To get to Line 2 at the airport, simply follow the metro signs. You will also need to pass through a security check before entering the actual train station.
Overall, it’s a solid choice for getting into Shanghai from Pudong Airport, but if getting to your hotel involves several changes or a long walk from one of the stations, I’d recommend booking a private airport transfer instead.

Pudong Airport to City Centre | By Maglev
Another option from Pudon Airport is the Shanghai Maglev, a high-speed train that connects to Longyang Road in the city.
It’s also more expensive; a standard one-way ticket costs RMB50 (AU$11), but the journey does only take eight minutes. The train can get up to speeds of 300 km/h.

I recommend buying your ticket here. No need to wait in line. Just pay, receive a QR code by email, and they'll give you a ticket at the box office without waiting in line. It's much cheaper, mind you.

The ride was more shaky than expected, and the seats were a bit hard... I was a little disappointed, but the ticket price was cheap, and there was plenty of luggage space, so it was probably worth the money? 🤣🤣 Buying online in advance was quite convenient, and the price was similar to a discounted ticket redeemed from a plane ticket (40 RMB one way), and even cheaper with app promotions. Redemption was simple; the QR code from the order was used to redeem a physical ticket at a machine, which was very convenient. The downside is that the round-trip ticket must be used within seven days; if you're traveling for a longer period, you'll need to buy separate tickets.

Pudong Airport to City Centre | Taxi
Taxis are of course another straightforward way to get to your hotel. At the airport, follow signs to the airport’s official taxi rank and show the driver your hotel’s Chinese name and address.
Note that if you’re arriving at night, Shanghai applies a 30% night surcharge to the base and distance fares between 11 pm and 5 am, so budget a bit more if you’re arriving late and planning on getting a cab.

Pudong Airport to City Centre | Bus
There is also a bus that goes into the city from Pudong Airport, and it can be worth considering if the destinations listed below match your plans:
Service | Destination | Fare |
Airport Line 4 | Shanghai Railway Station, North Square | RMB2–28 (AU$0.40-6) |
Airport Line 7 | Shanghai South Railway Station | RMB4–20 (AU$0.90-4.30) |
Late Night Bus | Hongqiao Hub East Transportation Center, with intermediate stops | RMB18–34 (AU$3.90-7.30) |

The location is excellent, right on Nanjing Road. There's a revolving restaurant upstairs and a shopping mall on the lower floors, making dining very convenient. Oliver, who assisted us, was incredibly nice and attentive, providing a five-star service throughout our stay. Most of the guests were international tour groups. The only downside is that the rooms are a bit old, and some have average views. We had a fantastic stay and were made to feel welcome from the moment we arrived. The staff were exceptionally warm and attentive, always even greeting us at the door, opening doors and checking cars for belongings left behind after long shopping trips.
The hotel has a beautiful, luxurious atmosphere, with excellent facilities including a very well-equipped gym and separate men’s and women’s sauna and steam rooms as well as a pool and hot tub. There is also an onsite spa opened till 2am! The ‘This Works’ bathroom toiletries in the rooms were a lovely touch and smelled wonderful.
Breakfast was outstanding, with an impressive selection and freshly prepared omelettes, steamed buns and pancakes. The English-speaking staff were also incredibly helpful throughout our stay and provided great recommendations of places to see and where to eat close by.
The location is excellent, within easy walking distance of Nanjing Road and the Bund. Overall, a beautifully presented hotel with genuinely excellent service — we would happily stay here again and am glad we chose to stay here as there are an overwhelming amount of choices available but we feel we made a great choice!FromAU$ 261

This hotel exudes an old-money charm. I booked a night at the Garden Hotel for a staycation, just to switch things up. It's a classic for a reason – the location is unbeatable; it's a leisurely 15-minute stroll back from the Shanghai Culture Square. Not to mention the stunning large lawn and the gorgeous Art Deco interiors. The service was excellent across the board, the pool was great for a swim, and breakfast offered the usual five-star Chinese and Western options, plus the Garden Hotel's special Japanese breakfast 😎. Jing'an District/West Nanjing Road Shanghai|0.85km from downtown
My friend was only staying in Shanghai for a day, so naturally, I wanted to give her an itinerary that offered both 'old-world charm and new-age chic.' While passing Nanjing West Road recently, this InterContinental 'Luxury Collection' hotel immediately caught my eye. And just as I expected, critical as she is, she complimented my taste the moment she walked in.
Its most appealing features are its convenient location and its ability to be a tranquil oasis amidst the bustle: step outside, and you're on the vibrant Nanjing Road; turn around, and you're in the quiet serenity of a residential area. My friend said the elevator decor instantly made her feel like she'd 'traveled through time,' and that unique 'Haitian style' evoked long-lost memories of Shanghai. She had originally come to sightsee but happily spent most of her day lingering at the hotel.
What she loved most were the terrace and the restaurant. On a summer evening, the breeze felt just like those childhood nights spent cooling off in the alleyways – she used to live in a Shikumen house. She remarked, 'If only I could lie in a wicker chair, fan myself with a palm-leaf fan, eat watermelon, and watch an outdoor movie, that would be truly divine.' She also adored the red hanging ornament in the lobby; it was vibrantly bright, yet its glass texture gave it a lively feel, much like Shanghai's character – passionate yet steady, with a touch of lightness within its composure.
The food did not disappoint either. I pushed her to try the Shiqipu Noodle Restaurant, where the owner asked in Shanghainese, 'Mi dao ai hao fa?' (Is the taste good?), and she smiled and replied, 'Authentic,' instantly tearing up. She specifically bought the sweet variety of butterfly pastries from the International Hotel – saying 'only sweet is truly Shanghai.' Her only regret was: having stayed in too many foreign-style grand hotels, this time, with Shanghai elements everywhere and Shanghai flavors in every bite, it was 'just missing the sound of Shanghai.' Perhaps the cicada chirps in the alleyways and the hawkers' cries from the Shikumen are the hometown sounds she truly yearns to hear.
However, she has already declared: the next time she returns, this will be her chosen hotel, and she plans to visit all the routes I arranged. I believe the charm of Shanghai has never been in its superficial glamour but in its ability to always find the most fitting way to blend East and West, ancient and modern, living as a unique 'Haipai' (Shanghai style). This is also the root that every Shanghainese person cherishes.
Below are the three half-day itinerary options I created for her, which I've also compiled here, hoping they might help someone else:
Option 1 · A Stroll Through Old Shanghai Charm
Start from the hotel's main entrance on Fengyang Road and turn into Huanghe Road. The Changjiang Building and Changjiang Theater were the last residences of Eileen Chang; Huanghe Road is the origin of 'Blossoms Shanghai' (Fan Hua). The International Hotel is where her mother and aunt once stayed; next to it, the Sports Museum is rumored to be where Eileen Chang used to study. Diagonally opposite is the History Museum (formerly the Racecourse); the East Wing houses the old bronze lions from the HSBC Building on the Bund, and the 'Echoes of Shanghai' exhibition in the West Wing happens to talk about the past of Fengyang Road. The ornate windows of the West Wing and the Changjiang Building, mirroring the hotel's architecture, perfectly showcase the most fashionable Art Deco style of the 1930s.
Option 2 · Tracing Red Memories
Walk along Chengdu North Road to the Secretariat of the China Labor Movement, to see how Shanghai workers united into a revolutionary force; then visit the former site of the Songpu Special Committee. Go to the Sihang Warehouse to hear the echoes of the Battle of Shanghai and see the bullet-riddled walls recount the tragedy of that year. At night, turn into Xiang Kang Li on Xinchang Road to find the former site of the CCP Central Committee's secret printing press; on Nanjing West Road, there is also the former site of the Soviet Liaison Office, where, amidst the flickering lights, memories of the past reside.
Option 3 · Modern and Retro Collision
The LV 'Big Boat' on Nanjing West Road is currently a popular spot for photos; after visiting, turn into Wujiang Road for shopping and dining, and further ahead is Zhangyuan Shikumen – where new trends emerge in old alleyways, perfect for capturing stunning photos.
Food Tips
· The hotel restaurant's afternoon tea set is exquisite and picture-perfect.
· Shiqipu Noodle Restaurant (the owner's Shanghainese is a living signboard).
· Deda Western Restaurant and Gongdelin Noodle Restaurant, each with its own charm.
· Donghai Small Restaurant (authentic Ningbo cuisine).
· Chongming cuisine on the second floor of the hotel, authentic local flavors.
· International Hotel butterfly pastries, remember to choose the sweet ones.
Though the day was short, the essence of Shanghai will give her much to savor. When she returns next time, we'll continue our journey.FromAU$ 221

The hotel was very nice. The breakfast buffet had a mix of western food and Chinese food. The only improvement I would suggest is a more powerful toaster, but that obviously isn’t a deal breaker. I had a very satisfying stay. The lobby atmosphere and environment were excellent, and the location was superb. It's only a 15-minute walk to The Bund and Nanjing Road, making it convenient for taxis and public transport. The room was simple, clean, and well-equipped with all facilities in good working order. You could see the 'three-piece set' (referring to the three iconic skyscrapers of Shanghai) and the Oriental Pearl TV Tower from the window. The front desk service was attentive, and check-in was quick and easy, not taking much time at all. The room was very well-maintained and even had a mini-bar and complimentary snacks. Facilities: This is an old-school five-star hotel. While the style has a bit of history to it, everything is impeccably clean. It truly showcases the quality of a five-star hotel and makes you feel at ease.
Hygiene: Nothing to complain about, absolutely excellent! Spotless.
Environment: Many foreigners stay here, making it feel like you're abroad. Of course, Shanghai is indeed an international metropolis, and you see a lot of foreigners on the streets.
Service: I have to complain about the hotel's breakfast, specifically the noodle and wonton station right at the entrance. You're a five-star hotel, after all. Yet, the wontons and noodles are pre-cooked. If you want some, they just roll them around in the broth, which is incredibly perfunctory. They taste mushy. It really cheapens the experience. They even give you a tag and tell you to pick it up after three minutes. Does it really take three minutes to swish something in a pot? It's out in 20 seconds, tops.
However, the egg pancakes are made fresh! An egg pancake requires tomatoes, onions, minced meat, mixing, spreading, rolling, and plating – wow, that sounds like a lot of work, right? But they make each one fresh, and you have to wait for it. If no one orders, they just leave the pan empty! You guys are truly dedicated!
Perhaps wontons and Chinese noodles just don't 'agree' with hotel settings, and they have to be pre-cooked. That's a tough pill to swallow.FromAU$ 258

The hotel's location is excellent, right next to Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street. It's only a 15-20 minute walk to the Bund. This time I stayed in an executive room which included breakfast and access to the executive lounge. The breakfast spread was very generous with a wide variety of choices, and the food tasted good too. The only downside was that the room showed clear signs of wear and tear, with dark stains around the bathtub. Also, getting a taxi was a bit inconvenient as drivers often didn't know how to get to the lobby on the second floor.FromAU$ 182

This is my second time staying at this hotel. I booked an executive twin room with my child. The room was clean, and its location right in the heart of Jing'an Temple makes dining and taking the subway incredibly convenient. I first booked it because of its proximity to Eileen Chang's former residence, Changde Apartment, and I booked it again because of its excellent location and service. My child particularly loves the hot spring pool here. We also ate several meals at CP Jing'an this time, which was very convenient.
However, you need to watch the time when taking a taxi. I noticed during this trip to Shanghai that Jing'an Temple is really congested. Getting to the hotel was a constant jam, and the ride to the airport was also quite slow. The hotel breakfast is excellent! There's a wide variety, and I always eat too much. Check-out time is also very flexible; my flight was at 4 PM, and the front desk staff kindly extended our check-out to 1:30 PM, which was fantastic service. I'll definitely consider staying here again on my next trip to Shanghai.FromAU$ 221

Decent stay, but several misses for a 5-star property
My stay at the Pullman Shanghai Central was a mixed bag—nice in some areas, but disappointing in others.
Check-in: The staff were very friendly and welcoming on our first day. However, I was surprised that they wouldn't let me check in until 3:00 PM. At most other hotels, I'm usually able to get an early check-in (even if I arrive at noon), so this felt a bit rigid for a property of this level.
The Room: The room itself was comfortable—the bed was soft and the shower pressure was actually perfect (not too strong, not too weak, just right). Unfortunately, the room smelled strongly of cigarette smoke upon arrival. To their credit, when I called the front desk, they immediately offered to change my room, which was very professional of them.
Breakfast: This was the biggest letdown. The breakfast buffet felt more like what you'd expect from a 3-star hotel rather than a 5-star Pullman. The quality and selection just weren't there for me.
Overall: It was an okay stay—nothing terrible, but nothing exceptional either. I wouldn't rate it a 10/10, more like a solid 6. Good service from the staff, but the check-in policy, smoke issue, and food really held it back.FromAU$ 152

The room was spacious enough, and the location was absolutely superb, offering an unobstructed view of the Bund right across the street. It's right next to Binjiang Park, so you just cross the road and you're by the river. Super Brand Mall is right next door, and the Pudong Art Museum is also very close. There are plenty of dining options nearby as well. Whether you're in a car or walking, the 'Three Piece Set' (Shanghai Tower, Jin Mao Tower, and Shanghai World Financial Center) is constantly in view. The breakfast was incredibly rich and diverse.

Also, the handsome guys and beautiful ladies at Flair were all very nice. I apologize for not remembering the name of the lovely lady who checked us in, but her recommendations for hotel benefits really saved us some money. A perfect National Day holiday experience, highly recommend Anandi Hotel Shanghai!
I came for a relaxing and healing break during the National Day holiday, and the entire stay exceeded my expectations. This was an absolutely wonderful hotel. The ambiance throughout the property was sophisticated, and the staff's service was meticulous, making my stay incredibly comfortable.
What particularly stood out was the hot spring. The atmosphere was superb, and it felt like I was experiencing the luxury of a Japanese ryokan, even though I was abroad. I believe it's on par with the best ryokans in Japan.

The hotel's atmosphere, the hot spring, and the thoughtfulness of all the staff were all magnificent. It's definitely a hotel I would love to visit again.FromAU$ 142

I stayed one night at Yuansu Hot Spring Hotel in Shanghai, and the overall experience was better than expected.
The room was very clean and well-equipped, making for a comfortable stay. My favorite part was the private hot spring tub in the room. After returning in the evening, I could soak anytime without needing a reservation, which offered excellent privacy.
The hotel also offers therapeutic activities like meditation. Unfortunately, I only stayed one night and didn't have much time to try them, but they seemed quite unique.
Parking at the hotel is very convenient, with plenty of spaces available. If you're driving, you basically don't have to worry about parking.
The hotel staff provided excellent and patient service. They were always quick to help with any issues and spoke very kindly.
Even though it was just a one-night stay, the overall experience was great. If I'm looking for a quiet place to relax and enjoy a hot spring in Shanghai in the future, I would definitely consider coming back here.FromAU$ 140

The hotel room facilities are good, with everything that should be there. The smoking area outside is also very beautiful. The breakfast in the morning is very good, it is self-service, and there are freshly made noodles to eat. If you are thirsty, you can go downstairs at any time to have some drinks and fruits, which are all included in the hotel package. Why the deduction? Like many reviews wrote, the water in the pool here is really too hot. It is the hottest of all the hot springs in Shanghai that I have been to. It feels too hot. I saw that several children could hardly soak in the water for a while. I don’t know why so many people complained. I saw that the management was still saying in the comments that it met the hot spring temperature requirements. What they said is that your water is too hot, and they are giving you suggestions. Everyone in the hot spring said that the water was hot, not that you violated any regulations... It takes talent to reply like thisFromAU$ 79

Shanghai Disney Resort Shanghai|18.67km from downtown
I visited Qianyun after looking at dozens of places in the area. I wanted to be away from typical city area, have a bathtub and nice outdoor area, and with easy access to Shanghai Disneyland. Qianyun met all those requirements and more! The location was immediately very serene and surrounded by forest, but still easy to access lots of waimai food delivery options. They were also very kind and proactive about sharing information about local restaurants and activities, and provide a breakfast and evening fruit every day. They offer free car transport to Disneyland, and I was excited to use this service but I ended up enjoying my time at the hotel so much that I opted to stay and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere instead! The hotel pets are so friendly - within five minutes the little cat Banban was on my lap and purring.
The room itself is decorated very nicely with all the amenities you need. The bathtub inside is very comfortable and I loved the outdoor hot spring tub as well. The attention to hygiene is very highly emphasized and I was impressed with how clean and luxurious everything felt.
I will definitely visit again and recommend to anyone hoping to have a convenient getaway from the city, or who would like to be near to Disneyland Resort while also experiencing a more peaceful area and for a good economical value and high quality service!

Our stay here truly exceeded all expectations, and I must give a huge shout-out to Sharon from the hotel! During our stay, not only was her service thoughtful and attentive, but it also happened to be the Mid-Autumn Festival. She warmly presented me with a box of exquisite and delicious mooncakes and even prepared special toiletries and slippers for the kids. Every detail showed immense sincerity. She was consistently enthusiastic and patient with guests, responding to requests efficiently and meticulously, making communication a real pleasure. The hotel's overall environment, cleanliness, and service standards were all top-notch. You can directly overlook Xintiandi, and the hotel's promotional video even features Ayanga. With such a professional and warm staff member like Sharon, the entire check-in process was incredibly comfortable. I rarely review hotels, but the service at The Portman Ritz-Carlton is truly exceptional – friendly and just right. The hotel facilities are also incredibly well-maintained; the elevators and the bar on the first floor have an aesthetic that harks back to an economically prosperous era. We booked an executive room, and the ladies at the executive lounge were professional and welcoming. They even knew it was our birthday and gave us a new Ritz lion charm when we checked out – so thoughtful! The lounge's food selection isn't vast, but the ingredients are top-notch, and every dish is meticulously prepared. The hot pastries are particularly excellent – crispy and not greasy. I recently had to stay at Citadines for an extended period due to some personal matters. I was initially worried about potential inconveniences, but it turns out all my concerns were unnecessary.
The front desk and concierge service are absolutely top-notch, five stars! I receive many deliveries daily, and the concierge always diligently brings them right to my room door, saving me the hassle of going downstairs to pick them up. I don't have to worry about packages at all. For long-term residents, this attention to detail is incredibly thoughtful and saves a lot of time and effort.
The room cleanliness is also excellent. The housekeeping staff does a fantastic job; the room is always spotless and comfortable, which makes for a pleasant stay. The overall service attitude is great, and any requests are handled promptly.

I specifically came here because of the TV show 'Blossoms' and I'm very satisfied. A big thank you to the lovely lady at the front desk who upgraded my room! All the staff I encountered were polite and enthusiastic, I give their service a perfect score 💯. The decor really suits my aesthetic, it's worth savoring every detail. The Peace Hotel truly lives up to its reputation as the face of Shanghai; as a Shanghainese myself, I'm so proud of it! I particularly recommend their guided tours, held daily at 10 AM and 2 PM. The half-hour explanation gives you insight into its century-long history, and there are many beautiful crafts to admire too. The breakfast selection is also very rich, and we were pleasantly surprised to find our favorites like wontons, potstickers, and soup dumplings. Just a small suggestion: it would be even better if low pillows were available. Overall, the experience was fantastic, and I'll definitely recommend it to friends. The gym is very well equipped, and the swimming pool is lovely and relaxing, perfect after a busy day in Shanghai. The service was good, and the environment was pleasant. My room had a river view. However, there were people smoking in the rooms or hallways, and when I opened my door, I could smell smoke. I suggest better separation between smoking and non-smoking areas. Also, breakfast wasn't great; there were very few choices, and some of the fried items were overcooked. I waited a long time for a wrap, only for it to be quite unappetizing. I noticed a staff member serving youtiao (fried dough sticks) – one hand had a glove, the other didn't, and they used their bare hand to break the youtiao to put into a wrap. At the noodle station, the noodles were placed so far back and so high up that it was really inconvenient for guests to get them. The staff standing nearby didn't offer any help. I recommend placing food items in more accessible locations. Overall, the dining options and management definitely need improvement.FromAU$ 203

Hongqiao District Shanghai|8.21km from downtown
A true hidden gem in this modern high-rise. The hotel is in the same building as the Novotel – specifically, Citadines occupies floors 15 to 18. The check-in experience is an absolute 10/10: the team is incredibly welcoming, offering coffee, tea, and small pastries, plus there's a very pleasant coworking space.
The rooms feel like compact studios with a kitchenette: microwave, washing machine, dryer, a full-sized fridge, and lots of storage. The bed and pillows are supremely cozy, and the shower… just wow! The water pressure is outstanding – truly a delight. The door goes from floor to ceiling, so steam from long, hot showers stays inside the bathroom. The sink area is a little tight, but perfectly fine for one or two people. Special shout-out: the magnifying mirror and the Japanese toilet – a real touch of luxury that I thoroughly enjoyed.
This time was just a long weekend, and we had a fantastic, relaxing stay.
The only small drawback: the metro is about 1 km away, maybe slightly farther. But the value for money is so excellent that what you save on the hotel more than covers a taxi ride. In fact, I had a 6:00 am train from Hongqiao and pre-ordered a Didi – it took just 15 minutes door to door, which was incredibly convenient for me. Considering how reasonable the price at Citadines already is, the Didi cost felt like nothing. That sealed the deal for me.
This is my third time staying here, and it remains my go-to place in Shanghai. Highly recommended – I'll be back again soon.FromAU$ 71

Hongqiao Airport to City Centre | Metro
If you’re flying into Hongqiao Airport, the first thing to do is to check your terminal before choosing a metro route:
- Terminal 1: Metro Line 10.
- Terminal 2: Metro Lines 2 and 10.
If Line 2 is more convenient for your hotel and you’re arriving at Terminal 1, take Line 10 towards Hongqiao Railway Station. It’s two stops away, via Terminal 2, and you can change there to Line 2 towards central Shanghai without leaving the paid area
From Terminal 2, Line 2 is useful for hotels around Jing’an Temple, People’s Square, Nanjing Road and Lujiazui. Line 10 is worth checking for hotels around Yu Garden, Xintiandi and the Shanghai Library area.
Hongqiao Airport to City Centre | Taxi or Private Transfer
A taxi suits a flexible arrival when you are happy to join the rank. A private transfer lets you arrange vehicle capacity and pickup instructions before travelling. With children, several suitcases or a hotel some distance from the metro, that convenience may be worth the additional cost.

Transferring Between Shanghai Airports
You might land in Shanghai and head straight to Suzhou or Hangzhou, saving Shanghai itself for later in your trip. If your onward high-speed train departs from Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station and you’ve landed in Pudong, the Airport Link Line provides a useful connection.
Take the Airport Link Line from Pudong Airport Terminal 1&2 Station to Hongqiao Airport Terminal 2 Station. The train journey takes about 40 minutes and costs RMB26 (AU$5). Once you arrive, follow signs through the Hongqiao hub to the railway station and your train’s departure area.
Transport mode | Approximate travel time | Estimated cost: RMB (AUD) | Best for |
Airport Link Line | About 40 minutes | RMB26 (AU$5.60) per person | A quick rail connection between Pudong and Hongqiao T2 |
Metro Line 2 | Around 90 minutes | RMB8 (AU$1.70) per person | Budget travellers with plenty of time |
Taxi | Around 60–90 minutes, depending on traffic | RMB200–300 (AU$43–64) per vehicle | Direct terminal access with luggage |
Private transfer | Allow around 60–90 minutes, depending on traffic | Varies; one supplier lists RMB550+ (AU$118+) per vehicle | Arranged pickup and vehicle capacity for your group |

Shanghai Airport Transfers After Dark
If your landing in Shanghai late, you’re a bit more limited in options for getting into the city. Once the metro, Maglev and daytime airport buses finish running, your main options for reaching central Shanghai are a taxi or pre-booked private transfer. Pudong Airport also has a night bus.
Late Arrivals at Pudong
Pudong’s published Late Night Bus runs:
- Terminal 1: 11 pm–5:30 am the next day.
- Terminal 2: 11:03 pm–5:33 am the next day.
It travels towards Hongqiao Hub East Transportation Center via stops including Century Avenue, East Yan’an Road/Zhejiang Middle Road and Yan’an Middle Road/Huashan Road. The fare varies depending on the stop, but is somewhere around RMB18–34 (AU$3.80-7.30).
For a direct journey, use the taxi rank or book a private transfer for your arrival.
Late Arrivals at Hongqiao
Metro Line 2 and Line 10 generally stop operation at around 10:30-11 PM. If your route has finished operating by the time you’ve picked up your bags, your best bet is a taxi or pre-booked transfer.
