Beppu Hotel Guide

Beppu is a city located in the central part of Oita Prefecture in Japan and is the prefecture’s second largest city. Beppu is located near the cities of Oita, Usa, Yufu, and Hijimachi. Transportation from the prefectural capital is convenient, in fact, there is only one mountain separating Beppu from Oita City, the location of the Oita Prefecture Office. It takes only 15 minutes to reach Beppu from Oita by rail. Beppu is renowned for its hot spring industry; there are more than 200 public hot springs throughout the city. Renowned for their high quality, the hot springs in Beppu are some of the best in the world. Within the city, around 2,700 springheads are located in an urban area of about 50 square kilometers.

The earliest historical records of the Beppu appeared in the Fudoki of Bungo Province and the Fudoki of Iyo Province, which records Beppu as a town of hot springs. In the Kamakura and the Muromachi periods, the region was under the control of the Ōtomo clan. In the Edo period, it became the municipal territory under the jurisdiction of the Shogunate. From the early Meiji period, it was already known as a famous hot spring spot and about 80,000 travelers visited Beppu every year. In the early Shōwa period, the city welcomed 2 million tourists each year and became the largest hot spring area in Japan.

Beppu welcomes around 4 million visitors each year and more than 80% of the employed population in the city works in the service industry. Hot springs have become a part of the life of the citizens. Because of the abundant hot springs, there are many cheap public baths that cost less than JPY 100. In addition, many people even have private hot springs in their houses and those without hot springs have the option of directing hot spring water into their homes and using it for baths. Some hotels in Beppu even have hot springs as well.

In addition to the hot springs, the Takasakiyama Natural Zoological Garden is located in the outskirts of Beppu. There, you can see Japanese monkeys that have been designated as an animal under national conservation. Mount Tsurumi and Mount Yufu are also popular with visitors and worth a visit.
