Best Things to Do in Chongqing

Chongqing Attraction| Hongya Cave

Chongqing Attraction| Hongya Cave

Source from Unsplash

  • Opening Hours: Open all day. Recommended to visit during the evening lighting hours.
  • Lighting Hours: Approximately 20:00 - 22:30 (subject to change; it's best to arrive around 21:00).
  • Best Photo Spots: The road opposite the first floor; on Qiansimen Bridge.

Want to see Chongqing's most stunning night view? Then you definitely shouldn’t miss Hongya Cave. It has become an immensely popular网红 (wǎng hóng - internet famous) spot in recent years, even surpassing the popularity of West Lake in Hangzhou and the Terracotta Warriors in Xi’an. Many say its appearance is strikingly similar to the bathhouse from the Japanese animated film "Spirited Away" (千与千寻).

Hongya Cave is a stilted building complex constructed along a cliff. By night, it’s bustling with crowds. The structure has 11 floors, filled with numerous food stalls and snack shops. Due to its unique mountainous terrain, exiting from either the 1st or the 11th floor leads directly to a street—a fascinating feature that exemplifies why Chongqing is often called a "magical 3D city."

Hongya Cave is one of the most beautiful spots in Chongqing. The lights stay on until 22:59, and once it hits 23:00 they switch off. It’s the perfect place for photos — absolutely stunning! Yes, it gets very crowded, but it’s definitely worth it. A must-see in Chongqing.

I visited Hongya Cave in Chongqing, and it was one of the most memorable places during my trip. I went there in the evening, and the view was incredibly beautiful. When the lights turned on, the entire complex looked like a glowing traditional building hanging on the cliff. The scenery from the bridge above was amazing, offering a perfect view of the illuminated buildings and the river. I also walked to the opposite side of the river, where the view was even more impressive. Seeing Hongya Cave from across the water made the whole place look magical and vibrant at night. I highly recommend visiting after sunset for the best experience.

Book your time slot up to 3 days in advance. We went from North to South then walked around briefly before getting a taxi to the next destination. The cable cars are crammed with people but worth experiencing. After riding the cable cars you should go to viewing platform to take a picture. You can also do iit at night h

Chongqing Attraction | Eling Park

Chongqing Attraction | Eling Park
  • Opening Hours: Open all day
  • The predecessor of Eling Er'chang Cultural and Creative Park was the "Chongqing Printing Factory No. 2," which was once regarded as a highlight of the printing industry in Southwest China.
  • The renovated old factory buildings retain the original appearance of the former industrial site while incorporating modern aesthetics. With vintage-inspired cultural and creative shops and unique restaurants, it’s a great place to explore!
  • Former Site of the Central Bank of the Republic of China Currency Printing Factory (1940)
  • Featuring many unique restaurants and snack shops, it has now become a popular artsy check-in spot for young people in Chongqing.

Public park, inside there is a lot of happy vibe from people who come to dance choreographies and play instruments. There is street food and other things for sale. Ponds and beautiful gardens. There was a chrysanthemum exhibition when I went. If you are walking to Liziba station I suggest going to the park first because it is quite high up, going down is like a 30 hour walk.

Elling Park in Chongqing is a really big, beautiful park 🌳, perched up in one of the higher parts of the city. The observation deck is definitely worth checking out—you can climb up and take in some absolutely breathtaking views of the skyline 🏙️. A lot of elderly people 👵👴 love to hang out here, chatting and relaxing, making the atmosphere super chill. It’s a lovely place for a peaceful walk 🚶‍♂️, and even the restrooms are fancy! They have this cool, old Chinese house vibe 🏯, which adds to the charm. Definitely a spot to unwind and soak in some local culture!

The first time I visited Eling Park, I didn't have high hopes. After entering, I learned that many embassies of Chongqing were located here in the past. It is free to visit and you can look down at the Jialing River from a high vantage point.

Chongqing Attraction | Ciqikou
  • Opening Hours: All day
  • Chongqing One-Day Tour Itinerary: Chongqing City One-Day Tour (Yangtze River Cableway & Shancheng Step Trail & Liziba & Ciqikou & Two Rivers Cruise)

There are many places here to experience Chongqing’s local specialty snacks, such as Chen Mahua (numbly spicy twists), Chongqing Xiaomian (spicy noodles), and Lao Suannai (traditional yogurt).

Wandering through small shops or cafés gives off a fresh, artsy vibe. When visiting Chongqing, you can make Ciqikou the first stop of your itinerary. In the morning, Ciqikou is least crowded, allowing you to experience the authentic old Chongqing atmosphere. However, by noon, it turns into a bustling tourist area.

Very famous attraction when I searching in Chongqing. The place has a lot of activities but it quite high so you need to walk many ladders
review picture

Cool place, 1 km walk from beginning to end (2 km round trip). Lots of other places to walk besides the main "old street". Lots of samples, you might get full lol. There is no Mahua museum (contrary to some internet articles). The Mahua museum is just a store called "Mahua museum" so don't get too excited. There is a Mahjong museum that was really cool for you Mahjong aficionados with old tables, old sets, and cool stuff. In terms of walkability most of it is flat but expect to go up and down about 30 steps each way. So doable if you are older or not super fit but not for wheelchairs

Five-star reviews, Ciqikou Ancient Town, also a food street, it is very convenient to go there, take the subway to Ciqikou subway station and walk a few steps to get there, there are many jewelry sellers, snack sellers, and peach blossom wine sellers, by the way, there is also the scenic spot Zhongjiayuan, and there seems to be a place where storytelling performances are held, but unfortunately there was no one there when we went there, generally speaking, it is still worth a walk

The hotel's location is excellent, very close to Hongyadong and Jiefangbei. The hotel environment is superb, directly facing the river with a very open view. The staff service is also great; they added me on WeChat before check-in to help arrange my room. There's also a small detail worth mentioning: the cleaning lady was incredibly thoughtful. Knowing I enjoy making tea, she specially prepared a few extra bottles of water for me and even left a small note. Thumbs up!👍🏻

I came to Chongqing for two days to see Cai Jie's concert. I couldn't decide between the Regent and the InterContinental, so I ended up staying one night at each. Here's a comparison from a few aspects: First, in terms of price, this hotel is more expensive than the Regent, possibly because Cai Jie is also staying here. The high-altitude view is indeed great, and the hotel's decor is very attractive and modern. Before check-in, the Regent had staff contact me to inform me about the weather and road conditions, and to ask about my preferences. The InterContinental didn't offer this. After getting out of the car at the hotel, there are two lobbies, left and right. My husband and I even went to the wrong one, ending up at the elevators for a banquet on the other side. Overall, staying here, a portion of the price is definitely for the view. The service details are slightly less impressive compared to the Regent.

Great location by the river, with a dedicated underground parking garage and a swimming pool. The service all-around was excellent. Came to Chongqing for Ella's concert and discovered this hidden gem of a hotel, highly recommend it to everyone. From pre-arrival to check-in, the staff took care of everything. They confirmed my preferences before I even arrived, and during my stay, they constantly updated me on the weather and offered travel tips. They even sent little gifts based on the weather, such meticulous care really made me appreciate Chongqing even more. The hardware facilities are impeccable. It's a relatively new hotel, and everything is well-maintained. The toiletries and bathroom amenities are excellent, almost like being at home. If you're ever in Chongqing and wondering where to stay, this place is definitely the right choice, convenient for getting anywhere.

As spring breezes sweep through the mountain city, blossoms burst forth, making it the perfect time to escape the urban hustle and find a tranquil spot for a weekend getaway. My stay at Meliá Chongqing thoroughly charmed me with its spring scenery and attentive service, offering a relaxing and rejuvenating slow-paced experience. The hotel is nestled in a lush, green sanctuary, far from the city's traffic. Stepping in, you're greeted by a vibrant spring panorama. The courtyard is a riot of color with flowers blooming everywhere, their pink hues contrasting beautifully with the verdant foliage. A gentle breeze carries the faint scent of flowers, making a stroll through the grounds incredibly pleasant. The entire hotel exudes a quiet elegance, free from noise and crowds. Both the rooms and public areas offer a unique sense of peace. Even just sitting on the balcony, enjoying the spring view and letting your thoughts drift, feels incredibly soothing – truly an ideal choice for a weekday leisure retreat. Upon arrival, Fisher proactively and warmly greeted me, kindly assisting with my luggage. He smiled throughout, attentively inquiring about my check-in needs, his movements efficient yet gentle. Corina Mandy handled both check-in and check-out with impressive efficiency. She patiently explained the hotel facilities, recommended spring photo spots nearby, and reminded me of important details for my stay. The room itself was quiet and comfortable, allowing me to fall asleep to the spring sunshine and the faint scent of flowers, enjoying a peaceful and undisturbed night's sleep. We arrived just in time for the beautiful spring blossoms, and we were immediately captivated by the vibrant spring scenery throughout the hotel grounds. The courtyards were filled with blooming flowers and lush greenery, and the gentle breeze was incredibly pleasant. You could feel the strong essence of spring everywhere, and it was a fantastic spot for photos. The room was spacious and bright, clean and tidy, with excellent natural light. Opening the window, we were greeted with a full view of the spring landscape, which instantly uplifted our spirits. The hotel service was thoughtful and attentive; the concierge and front desk staff, Corina, Fisher, and Mandy, were particularly warm and ensured every detail was well taken care of. Our child was especially fond of the hotel's kids' facilities and had a wonderful time, which allowed us to relax a bit too. The classic cappuccino at the lobby bar is also highly recommended; it was smooth and delicious. The breakfast buffet offered a rich and varied selection, with fresh ingredients and great taste. Both Chinese and Western options were available, catering to different preferences. In our free time, we enjoyed strolling through the grounds, admiring the flowers, and soaking up the sun, truly savoring the beauty of spring – it was incredibly relaxing. Overall, the environment is beautiful, the service is heartwarming, and the facilities are comprehensive, making it perfect for a spring trip with kids. The room was decent, and the service was very good. The location is also excellent; it's right next to Jiaokou Station, the terminal stop of Metro Line 2. The front desk is on the 5th floor, and you can access the Shibati Scenic Area directly from the 1st floor.

Guestroom (Double Bed)
I enjoyed my stay very much. The hotel is easy to find and close to many stores. The front desk staff are helpful. The room is comfortable and the facilities work well. I will choose it again next time. The view from the bed is gorgeous. The only minor downside is the sound insulation, as noise from the corridor (doors or children) can sometimes be heard in the morning. Overall, I was very satisfied and would definitely recommend this hotel.

Chongqing Food Recommendation

Chongqing Food Recommendation

Source from Visit Our China

  1. Chongqing Noodles: What’s Chongqing locals’ favorite breakfast? Xiaomian! A simple bowl of noodles needs no extra toppings to delight your taste buds.
  2. Hotpot: As the icon of Chongqing cuisine, hotpot is truly unbeatable! Any ingredient dipped into the rich, spicy beef tallow broth becomes incredibly delicious.
  3. Chuanchuan Xiang: Those in the know understand that the broth for Chuanchuan Xiangdiffers from hotpot—it’s less heavy on the beef oil. Do you also grab handfuls of beef skewers every time?
  4. Hot and Sour Sweet Potato Noodles: True to its name, this dish is both tangy and spicy—absolutely addictive! The chewy noodles soaked in the flavorful sauce can even help drive away the chill.
  5. Maoxuewang: A hearty dish made mainly with blood curd, tripe, and assorted meats, served on a bed of vegetables and packed with fiery mala flavor. It’s truly a rice-stealing superstar!
  6. Ciba: “Sweet little Ciba, 20 pieces for 1.5 yuan!”—a familiar street vendor call from childhood. These soft, sticky rice cakes dipped in soybean flour are simply irresistible.
  7. Trotters Soup: Soft, tender, and rich without being greasy—this trotter soup is absolutely a nourishing classic.

FAQs about Chongqing Travel

  • How many days do you need in Chongqing?

You generally need 2 to 3 days for Chongqing's highlights, but 4 to 6 days is recommended for a comprehensive experience including day trips to nearby attractions like the Dazu Rock Carvings or Wulong Karst. A longer stay of 5 to 7 days allows for deeper cultural exploration, nature immersion, and even a Yangtze River cruise.
  • Is Chongqing or Chengdu better?

If you're interested in pandas, tea culture, and a more laid-back atmosphere, Chengdu might be preferable. On the other hand, if you enjoy vibrant nightlife, unique geography, and river cruises, Chongqing could be the better choice. Ultimately, both cities have their own charm and are worth visiting!
  • What is Chongqing famous for?

Chongqing is famous for its unique "cyberpunk city" architecture built on steep hills, spicy hot pot cuisine, and as a major starting point for Yangtze River cruises through the Three Gorges. The city is also known for its foggy weather, vibrant neon lights, and its blend of ancient sites like the Dazu Rock Carvings and modern marvels.
