The Best New Zealand eSIM Packages with Deals

When it comes to comparing eSIM packages and deals, it comes down to how long you’re staying and how much data you burn through in general. If you're unsure, make sure to start sketching out your route with our New Zealand Travel Guide before committing to a plan.

Trip.com has plans that cover everything from a long weekend sample of the foodie scene in Auckland to a month-long road trip through the stunning nature of the South Island.

What's Best for New Zealand? eSIM, SIM Card or WiFi Router

Essentially, when it comes to choosing between a New Zealand eSIM, a physical SIM card or a portable WiFi router, it comes down to how many people will need to get online and the convenience factor.

What's Best for New Zealand? eSIM, SIM Card or WiFi Router

New Zealand eSIM

An eSIM is a virtual SIM built directly into your smartphone, so there's no physical card to buy, swap or lose. For me, this is the absolute gold standard. Switching physical SIM cards can be a bit of a pain with modern phones if you don’t have the correct tool, and with an eSIM, you don’t have to worry about losing your Aussie SIM card either as it stays in your phone.

Purchase your New Zealand eSIM before you leave Australia, and it will start working as soon as you land. Just make sure to go into your phone’s settings and check that your data is running through your New Zealand eSIM, otherwise you’ll be charged the roaming fees. If you're new to the technology entirely, our complete eSIM handbook covers how it all works in more detail.

New Zealand SIM Card

A New Zealand SIM card is your phone's ID for the local network; it gives you a New Zealand number and local data. For me it’s only worth getting a SIM card if I'm planning to travel somewhere a bit more long term, where a local number would come in handy. If you're going down the path of buying a SIM card for your New Zealand trip, you can buy one on Trip.com and pick it up when you land at the airport.

A must-have for any self-driving trip – a phone call function. Booking on the Trip app saves you 10-15% compared to buying on-site. Pre-ordering is highly recommended; simply show your booking number on-site, and staff will assist with phone setup and other services.

One NZ (Vodafone) provides a phone number for calls, internet access, and SMS, ensuring you have a backup plan in case you need to make phone calls. Buy the cheapest plan that will be sufficient for your needs; if you require a lot of internet access, then buy a data SIM card to supplement it.

Convenient and quick! There's a One NZ counter right outside Christchurch airport; the staff will help you set it up. I'll definitely shop there again!

The customer service staff were very friendly, assisting with SIM card installation and providing detailed explanations. This is a highly recommended phone card. However, this card may not receive a signal in some areas.

Convinient! Just come out from the gate, the shop is in-front of you.

New Zealand WiFi Router

A pocket WiFi router is another option for staying connected while in New Zealand. It’s a portable hot spot that devices can connect to, so it makes sense for a family or group of friends travelling together where everyone wants to be online. Although, it’s one more thing to charge every night.

How to Activate and Use eSIM for New Zealand

Activating a New Zealand eSIM takes about five minutes. It’s best to install and activate it before you fly, and can be done from home.

Check If Your Phone Supports eSIM

If your phone is relatively new, released in the last five or six years, you’re good to go. All the major brands like iPhones, Samsung Galaxy phones, and Google Pixels are compatible with eSIMs.

Not sure if your phone? Dial *#06# and look if you have an EID number; if it's there, your phone supports eSIM.

How to Activate and Use eSIM for New Zealand

Steps to Install Your New Zealand eSIM

Once you've bought your eSIM on Trip.com, you'll get an email with your QR code. From here, installation is simple.

Installation steps for iPhone:

  1. Make sure you’re connected to your home WiFi network
  2. Open Settings, then select Mobile
  3. Tap "Add eSIM"
  4. Open the email you received from Trip.com
  5. Scan the QR code through Settings (not your camera app)
  6. Follow the prompts on your screen to complete setup
  7. Label it something easy to find, such as "NZ"

Installation steps for Android users:

  1. Connect to your home WiFi network
  2. Go to Settings, then SIM Card Management (or Connections > SIM Manager if you’re using a Samsung)
  3. Select Add new SIM card
  4. Once here, you can scan your QR code you received from Trip.com
  5. Follow the setup prompts
eSIM Installation Steps for iPhone and Android

Super Important Tips

  • Don't remove the eSIM once installed, because you can only use the QR code once.
  • Install it before you fly, but within your plan’s start window
  • Once you land, turn on data roaming, but make sure that your data is running through your new eSIM, and not your Australia SIM card (in connection settings)
  • Keep your Trip.com order number handy
  • If you're extending your stay, you can renew your eSIM through Trip.com and won’t need to reinstall one

It worked perfectly without any problems! And for some reason, roaming was also possible in Australia. The countdown starting from the activation time was also great, as it allowed for efficient use.

Mobile Coverage in New Zealand: What to Expect

New Zealand's mobile coverage is excellent in the major cities and tourist areas. You'll have solid 5G connections in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Queenstown, and good reception along the main tourist routes, including State Highway 1 and popular stops like Hobbiton and Waiheke Island.

The three local networks are Spark, One NZ (formerly Vodafone) and 2degrees. Spark is generally regarded as having the widest coverage, particularly across the wilder South Island. Trip.com's New Zealand eSIMs run on the One NZ and Spark networks.

A few things worth doing before you head bush:

  • Download offline maps before venturing into Fiordland, the Tongariro Alpine Crossing or the Coromandel
  • Note that New Zealand's emergency number is 111, putting you in touch with police, fire and ambulance
  • Remember that eSIMs are data-only, so calls happen over WhatsApp, FaceTime or your roaming Australian SIM

A very cost-effective living option. We brought two babies and booked a 90-square-meter two-bedroom, one-living room apartment. The floor-to-ceiling windows are basically full of sea views, and the balcony is also full of sea views. It is very convenient to walk to the beach. It is suitable for families with children, friends gatherings, client receptions, etc. They are all independent houses with good privacy. The most important thing is that the price of 340 New Zealand dollars also includes breakfast for our family of four. The breakfast is also good and worth experiencing. It is very convenient to drive to Auckland in an hour. Suggestion: If the kitchen can be equipped with more pots and stoves, it will be more suitable for staying for a few days.

The hotel's location is absolutely fantastic, right in the heart of the city center. Plus, it's right by the sea with beautiful ocean views from the window. Just a short walk brings you to impressive skyscrapers, and it's not far from the tower either. Basically, you can enjoy a city walk from here without needing a car.

We love this hotel but the room we booked wasn't as pictured. We got a strange room with no natural light at opened up to air ducting. The bathroom was also not as pictured and really cramped. It wasnone nigjt and we didnt want to make a fuss. With this being said, we've given it another chance because the service and staff are amazing. We are going back this weekend so hopefully they'll get our room correct.

I travel almost every month. This hotel is definitely the best value for money around. Very pleasant surprise. In terms of location, the hotel is five or six hundred meters away from the skycity. It is closer to Queen Street and Victoria Street. The Asian supermarket opposite the hotel is very convenient. The hotel location is good so it is quiet In terms of facilities, the electrical appliances of this hotel are better than five-star hotels. I am so surprised that I often travel on business, so I have stayed in many five-star hotels. The household things are very high-end. Panasonic TV LG refrigerator is Australian brand Westinghouse appliances and furniture are very new and very new What brand of oven I forgot is also a very good brand The toiletries and tea bags and coffee in the room are complete, even the tea cups are Australian brand maxwell and williams The bone china is very good texture than the things used by five-star hotels. The kitchen has an induction cooker, a range hood, a kettle, etc. The sofa in the room is also very spacious. In terms of service, the hotel owner and front desk are very nice. The staff can speak English, Cantonese and Mandarin. There is a free upgrade. Amazing. There is a lock up garage. The garage is safe and convenient. The room has free mineral water and tea bags. Discounts on taxis In terms of value for money, the room is quite good. The surrounding hotels have no air conditioning, no kitchen, no appliances, and the old rooms are more expensive than here. This is really the king of cost performance. Real name Amway

After arriving in Auckland on the last flight from Queenstown, the airport transfer to the hotel took less than 10 minutes, which was super convenient for an overnight layover. You can check in at the front desk or use one of the two self-service kiosks. I booked a standard room through a third-party platform for only 500, which was great value for money. The only downside was that the walk to the room was quite long. The balcony door in the ground-floor room opened onto a small lawn, offering a bit of a view. The room size was adequate, and the bedding was fairly comfortable. Overall, it was a good experience, and there's a direct bus to the airport not far from the hotel.

I had a very enjoyable stay at Rendezvous Heritage Hotel Auckland. The location is excellent, right in the city center, making it easy to explore nearby attractions, restaurants, and shopping areas. The room was spacious, clean, and well-maintained, with comfortable bedding and all the essential amenities for a relaxing stay. I especially appreciated the quiet atmosphere, which made it easy to unwind after a busy day in the city. The hotel facilities were impressive, particularly the indoor and outdoor pools, gym, and sauna, which added extra value to the experience. The staff were friendly, professional, and always willing to help, ensuring a smooth check-in and overall pleasant stay. While the decor may feel slightly dated in some areas, everything was well-kept and functional. Overall, it offers great value for money and is a solid choice for both business and leisure travelers visiting Auckland.

After meticulously comparing hotels through reviews, choosing this one was definitely the right decision. The location is superb, right beneath the Sky Tower, and conveniently next to the SkyBus stop from the airport and the Intercity bus station, making transportation incredibly easy. Downstairs is the famous Depot restaurant. Check-in is self-service via a machine, and the entrance feels very safe, unlike other hotels where you might encounter homeless people. A short walk takes you to a New World supermarket and Chemist Warehouse, making everything easily accessible. They provide a kettle and daily housekeeping, which is quite suitable for Chinese travelers. There's also a gym upstairs. All in all, it's a very worthwhile stay, and the price is reasonable too.

This is an older hotel, and while the facilities are a bit dated, the environment is very pleasant. Our window directly overlooked Albert Park, and what's great is that the window could be opened slightly, which made for excellent ventilation. The hotel breakfast was also good. Unfortunately, because I wasn't sure if the stay would be comfortable, I only booked 2 nights initially. When I tried to book a third night, the hotel was fully booked, so I had to switch to a different hotel. I requested a late check-out, and that was quickly arranged.

The hotel's location is absolutely fantastic! Right outside, you'll find the best shopping street, Drottninggatan. It's also super convenient for taking a ferry from the nearby harbor, and there's a bus stop and subway station just around the corner. The front desk staff were really friendly, and they even offer luggage storage after check-out. The room was a bit small and the breakfast was just okay, not a huge variety, but the views were great. Given such a prime location, these minor points are totally acceptable. Overall, it's a very good hotel.

Motels in the north shore area, suitable for families, many beds, can cook, but there is no range hood, and the sputum can be simple. The location is very good, very close to the bus terminal, there is a big supermarket nearby. The front desk got off work very early, but the attitude was very good and the cleaning was very positive. The only downside is that there is no. . . It’s a really new hotel comes with air bnb facilities like wash & dry machine, cooking utensils, stove, microwave, dishwasher and oven etc which is super good for a family /friends after a long trip and need to wash some clothes, the only defect is the water pot is too dirty to use but complimentary waters are available in the fridge. However, location wise is a bit far from central, it takes 45mins to reach the airport or 18mins to reach central. Surroundings have a big grocery and a Chinese restaurant Sum Made of which the food are taste really good and the portions are bigger than we used to have in Mel.
