Top Xi’an Sight #1: Emperor Qin Shi Huang’s Terracotta Army

As one of the Eight Wonders of the World, the Terracotta Army of Qin Shi Huang showcases the awe-inspiring might and craftsmanship of ancient China’s military: thousands of terracotta figures, varying in size and each with unique expressions, stand in precise formation—truly breathtaking. This underground army was created as the Qin emperor’s guard for the afterlife, and it remains one of the most significant discoveries in world archaeology.
Getting there: From downtown Xi'an, take Metro Line 9 to 【Qinling Metro Station】, then transfer to a tourist shuttle bus or grab a taxi.

We visited on September 1st at midday and hardly had to queue. It's true that the children were already in school that day and there weren't as many local tourists on holiday. I can't say much more about the visit because what you can see is widely known. With the same ticket for the warriors, you can go to the mausoleum by taking a shuttle bus.

It's well worth the price. In our case, it wasn't a door-to-door service as advertised; both on the way there and back, they dropped us off at locations near the hotel (about 500m). The guide only speaks Chinese, so the explanations were only in Chinese. Otherwise, it was exactly what we expected: a bus service that takes you to the Terracotta Warriors, gives you about 3 hours to explore on your own, and then returns you to the center of Xi'an. They offer a guided tour service as an extra charge. The customer service behind this service is excellent.

Yes, it's worth a visit. Getting there is expensive; the bus/metro combination is somewhat confusing, DiDi costs at least 40 euros, and the shuttle bus is poorly organized.

It's a truly magnificent mausoleum; going inside is breathtaking. However, you need to get there correctly and take the right bus because there are two parts: a smaller section that serves as a museum, and the grand Qin Shi Huang Mausoleum. You can visit both parts.

Recommended Xi'an Attractions #2 Daming Palace National Heritage Park

Daming Palace is the most important imperial palace site from the Tang dynasty, with expansive grounds. The park combines a museum, interactive AR experiences, and reconstructed buildings to showcase royal life and architectural artistry from the High Tang era. Visit in spring or fall—the blend of past and present here is mesmerizing.
Getting there: Take Subway Line 4 to Daming Palace National Heritage Park Station; it's an easy walk from there.

The vast park offers many activities, but the palace itself is merely a preserved ruin, displayed alongside its history in a museum.

The Danfengmen Museum is a good place for those interested in Tang history and enjoy unusual museum spaces. It's not a "wow" attraction, but rather an intimate, clever location. There are almost no exhibits as such. It's a museum of ruins, meaning you're looking mostly at foundations, remnants of walls, and pits. If you're expecting a traditional museum with display cases and artifacts, you'll be disappointed. It's more about the atmosphere and architecture. If you have an extra half day and have already seen the main things in Xi'an, it's worth a stop. As a standalone trip, probably not. But I didn't regret the time spent.

This park is very large and has some interesting statues and architecture. However, I do not recommend going in winter. You would have to visit in Spring time since it gets very hot and tiring in the summer time and too cold in the winter time.

This is a huge park that has some interesting architecture to see but it is tiring and has many entrances and exits.I would not go on a sunny or hot day because it would be tiring. The ideal time to visit is in Spring.

Top Attractions in Xi'an #3 Xi'an Ancient City Wall

Xi'an's Ancient City Wall is the most intact surviving ancient city fortification in China. Rent a bike to circle the wall for a full loop and take in bird's-eye views of the old city's streets. By day or by night, the scenery from atop the wall has a charm all its own—an unmissable historical experience when visiting Xi'an.
Getting there: Take Metro Line 2 to Yongningmen Station or Nanmen Station, then it's about a 5-minute walk.

Xi'an City Wall is one of the oldest, largest, and best-preserved ancient military fortifications in the world. While walking along the wall, you can feel authentic atmosphere and imagine how things worked in the ancient times.I came to the Wall during sunset and I could enjoy breathtaking panoramic views in daytime and in the darkest times. It was amazing 👏 You can rent a bicycle (single or tandem) to ride along the wide top, it is the most popular way to experience it.

Recommended Xi'an Attractions #4 Giant Wild Goose Pagoda

The Giant Wild Goose Pagoda is where the Tang dynasty monk Xuanzang translated Buddhist scriptures, symbolizing the cultural exchange between Chinese and Indian Buddhism. The pagoda grounds exude a solemn, tranquil atmosphere, and nearby you'll find a musical fountain plaza and a Tang-themed cultural shopping district—perfect for offering prayers by day and for evening strolls and photos.

The massive tower definitely gives you the feeling of being at a landmark. The temple buildings, unlike those in Korea, clearly make you feel like you are in China. The path from the subway station to the temple is lined with well-organized shops, making it a great place for shopping as well.

One of my favorite places to visit in Xi'an. The pagoda is truly impressive, and beyond its historical and cultural significance, the entire surrounding area is beautiful, well-maintained, and a pleasure to visit.
The atmosphere is unique and allows you to immerse yourself in the city's history, especially while walking inside the complex and admiring the traditional architecture. I recommend taking some time to explore the surrounding area, as the entire area is truly worth a visit.

Xi'an's most popular food district blends Muslim culture with classic Shaanxi snacks—yangrou paomo, jing gao, and soup dumplings are all irresistible. At night, the Muslim Quarter is all lit up—a true paradise for foodies.

We're always rushing forward, forgetting how to slow down. Travel helps us press pause, slowing our pace and calming our hearts. Stroll slowly through an old alley, savor a local snack, watch the sunset at your own pace, and you'll discover how comfortable a slower pace of life can be. All the anxiety from rushing will vanish, and when you return to your journey, you'll have more energy.

With a collection of over 370,000 artifacts spanning treasures from the Zhou, Qin, Han, and Tang dynasties, it fully showcases Shaanxi’s rich history as the ancient capital of thirteen dynasties and is the best gateway to understanding ancient Chinese civilization.

For a few hundred dollars, I got to stay in this upscale hotel. It boasts a garden-style courtyard, bursting with vibrant flowers and alive with the sounds of birds and cicadas. The breakfast spread is incredibly rich, offering both Chinese and Western options. Parking is super convenient, and they even have a thoughtful car wash station. The room itself is cozy yet grand, fully equipped with everything you need, and wonderfully quiet for sleeping. My first time trying this place, and I thought it was great! I booked the cheapest room, which I think was a 16-person dorm, but the front desk lady upgraded me to a 12-person one. I even extended my stay for another night.
The environment inside is quite peaceful. Everyone in the common areas is pretty respectful, except for a few loud shouts during billiards sometimes!
Oh, and there were a lot of foreigners, couples mostly, chatting among themselves – it had a nice vibe.
Since it was my first time, I wasn't familiar with everything and didn't prepare toiletries. When I went to shower, I even saw two guys coming out of the same stall, which honestly stunned me a bit.
However, the privacy in the restrooms and shower rooms is excellent; they're all enclosed. The hot water comes on quickly, the water pressure is strong, and everything is clean.
Everyone seemed pretty well-behaved. I mostly kept to myself, though, and didn't really interact with anyone. At one point, a foreigner asked me in English if he could use a stool. I honestly didn't understand anything he said, but I got his meaning and just waved my hand. He must have thought I was refusing him because he started to leave. I was so flustered I couldn't speak, just waving my hands around like fans, trying to convey my meaning. He must have seen my panic and understood, so he moved the stool. Only then could I relax and continue drinking my hot water alone. (I saw the front desk staff, both a guy and a lady, speaking English with the foreigners, and I was so envious! Ugh, I can only read English; I can't understand or speak it. I really need to practice my listening and speaking skills. I'll try my luck again next time.)
Overall, I think it's a pretty good place.
Oh, and its location is fantastic, right by the Bell Tower. But make sure you exit the correct subway station, or else a directionally challenged person like me will spend almost an hour wandering around trying to find it!FromTHB 221

Love love love this hotel!!! I stayed with my friend in a 2 bed 2 bath room for 8 nights and it was extremely spacious and comfortable. The rooms were very clean and the beds super super super comfy ( I could sleep it in all day but my itinerary was super full). The photos online are quite true to the actual room. They had extremely good service too, starting from the airport pickup, where they were on time and the car was spacious and luxurious! We did the 5 seater sedan at RMB100, the price is comparable to a didi premium but the difference is that they would track your flight and made sure to you were taken care of. The hotel even had Butler service and was very attentive, I could even get them to help store my friend's birthday cake sent from the local cake shop and send it up to us when we were back. The laundry service was handy for a long stay, it was easy to use (and we were on the same floor so it felt like home to just go to and from our room to the laundry room). They even had special prices for popular shows, easily saving more than 50% of the listed price. Thanks for being a home away from home! PS the cats on the 2nd floor is super cute!FromTHB 1,079

Dayan Pagoda/The Grand Tang Mall Xi'an|5.15km from downtown
After much deliberation for this trip, I chose The Westin Hotel. It's conveniently located next to the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda, and the Grand Tang Dynasty Everbright City is within walking distance. The overall design features Tang Dynasty-style courtyards, with a grand lobby exuding ancient charm. The guest rooms are spacious and comfortable, and some even offer views of the pagoda's night scenery. The hotel boasts a full range of facilities, including a swimming pool and a gym. Breakfast offers a wide variety of choices, with many local Xi'an flavors to sample. During the summer, it was noticeable that the hotel was quite busy, with the restaurant usually full between 8:00 AM and 9:30 AM. Since the hotel opened quite a while ago, some facilities show their age slightly, but overall, it's clean and well-maintained.
Upon check-in, the hotel provided complimentary tickets to the Qujiang Art Museum, which is directly accessible via an elevator from the hotel lobby. The main exhibition hall showcases exquisite gold and jade artifacts, with dazzling Ming and Qing dynasty gold jewelry and jade pieces. There are also ceramic exhibition halls and a Picasso exhibition. You can scan QR codes to listen to audio guides, and a thorough visit takes about an hour and a half. Staying here allows you to leisurely visit the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda in the evening and explore the Everbright City at night, saving you the hassle of commuting. The nearby Joy City offers convenient shopping and dining options. During my stay, coffee and milk tea ordered were promptly delivered to my room by robots.FromTHB 3,404

Dayan Pagoda/The Grand Tang Mall Xi'an|6.35km from downtown
This was the first hotel where I stayed for five consecutive nights. I'd go to Mount Hua and Xianyang during the day and return here in the evenings. Even though the hotel has been open for over ten years, the black mahogany decor in the rooms is still very well maintained. The huge lobby is incredibly grand; the only other hotel I've stayed in that can compare is the Zhongwu Hotel. The hotel's breakfast truly deserves a mention – it's incredibly varied, and the quality is excellent. They offer local specialties like 'Youpo Mian' (oil-splashed noodles) and 'Roujiamo' (Chinese hamburger), which taste just as good as what you'd find in a specialized restaurant. The attached Spanish restaurant is also authentically styled. The hotel service was great too; a minor issue upon check-in was resolved quickly, and they even gave me an extra breakfast. The hotel environment is also fantastic, with a resort-style garden. The back exit leads directly to the Furong Xintiandi commercial complex, and the front exit opens to Qujiang Relic Park, which is lovely for an morning stroll. It's also not far from the Tang Paradise and the Grand Tang Everbright City. For other destinations, there are subway and bus stations near the hotel. The only downside was that the TV signal wasn't great, with only a few channels working properly. However, since I was out late and back late every day, I didn't have much time to watch TV anyway, but I still hope they can improve it.FromTHB 3,973

I chose to extend my stay at the Grand Noble Castle Hotel, simply because I couldn't bear to leave the view of Chang'an from my window. The hotel's Tang-style castle architecture faces Yongning Gate across the street, offering an unparalleled and unbeatable view. In the morning, I could gaze at the long stretch of the Ming City Wall's blue bricks, and then wait for dusk to fall, as the city tower lights illuminated one by one. I could enjoy the night view of the South Gate without even stepping out. The room was clean and quiet, and the bedding was comfortable, providing a peaceful rest after a day of sightseeing. The staff's service was gentle and appropriate, and extending my stay was smooth and efficient. The hotel is close to the subway, and the Forest of Stone Tablets is within walking distance, making it very convenient. Staying at the foot of the ancient city wall, falling asleep to the millennia-old Chang'an – if you appreciate the historical ambiance of an ancient capital when visiting Xi'an, this is undoubtedly the ideal choice. My stay at Grand Hyatt Xi'an was absolutely fantastic, and a special shout-out to Vivian at the front desk! She made the check-in process incredibly efficient and thorough, patiently explaining all the hotel's amenities. Knowing I had an early flight the next morning, she proactively and thoughtfully arranged complimentary airport transfer, saving me the hassle of booking a car myself. After check-in, she even presented me with a special 'energy pack' filled with authentic local snacks from Shaanxi – a truly heartwarming and generous gesture. Her communication throughout was gentle and attentive, demonstrating full professionalism. The hotel environment is really great, with lots of greenery and trees everywhere, making for a very comfortable stay. This time I stayed for quite a while, and the butler was wonderfully attentive throughout my stay, always responding promptly to any requests and handling them with incredible patience. They even helped me find something I accidentally left behind right away, which was a huge relief when traveling with kids. This is definitely a family-friendly hotel, and choosing a package for a long stay offers great value for money.
The only minor suggestion is that the restaurant food was a bit bland, so we opted to eat out for a few days. However, the overall experience was still very good, and I would definitely consider this hotel again for our next family trip.FromTHB 2,761

At check-in, they were welcoming & found an English speaking staff member who escorted us to our room, which was super spacious & clean. The hot springs are across the driveway, but there was a shuttle car available if necessary. The breakfast had tons of options & they even indulged my requests (delivered via a translation app) for “a knife to spread butter” & “eggs with soft yolks”.
We arrived there via subway & walking. From the subway, with our luggage in tow, was 15 minutes or less. Right around the subway station are other food & store options. Without bags & at a leisurely walk, it was about 15 minutes to Huaqing palace.FromTHB 1,854

It's truly perfect for family trips, and I wholeheartedly recommend it! We even got upgraded to a suite, which was fantastic!
The hotel's location is excellent, close to major attractions like Huaqing Palace and Mount Li, making it incredibly convenient for sightseeing. This saved us a lot of travel time, which was a huge plus when traveling with elderly parents and children. The hotel itself has an elegant garden style, with a quiet and serene environment, lush greenery, and fresh air. It's a peaceful escape from the city's hustle and bustle, providing a truly relaxing stay.
What truly stood out was the hotel's service. It was attentive, meticulous, and wonderfully thoughtful throughout our stay, with an exceptionally good attitude. Traveling with elderly parents and children meant we had a lot of luggage. The front desk processed our check-in very quickly, and the staff were patient and detailed, proactively telling us about nearby attractions, breakfast times, and hotel amenities. During our stay, service requests were promptly addressed, and any needs we had were quickly resolved. Our room was clean and tidy, with great natural light and ventilation. The bedding was soft and comfortable, and the room was fully equipped with excellent attention to cleanliness details. HUAQING YUTANG Hotel can be considered one of the top hotels in China. Although it doesn't have a star rating, all its facilities and services exceed five-star standards. The service, rooms, dining, and views are all first-class 👏. The costumes, makeup, stage design, and lighting for 'Song of Everlasting Sorrow' are incredibly beautiful and exquisite, and the performance is breathtaking❗️ Both the à la carte and buffet breakfast at the hotel are delicious and authentic. The buffet breakfast offers a wide variety of items, and most importantly, the quality is very high. My family loved it 😀. In the morning, you can enter Huaqing Palace directly from the hotel before other tourists arrive, making for a leisurely and pleasant visit. After exploring the park, you can head straight to breakfast – a perfect start to the day 😊. The hotel includes hot springs, including carbonic acid springs, which are very comfortable for soaking. There are also hot springs in the room, so you can enjoy a relaxing soak before a good night's sleep, which is very refreshing. Whether it was in the lobby, guest rooms, shuttle bus, restaurant, hot spring SPA, or with the doormen, every staff member we encountered was incredibly thoughtful and polite. They remembered guests, proactively identified our needs, and provided precise service, which deserves high praise 👍. The complimentary small gifts and welcome fruits were not perfunctory; they were all of high quality 👍. The hotel also provides a complimentary 'Jinghong' photo shoot where you can choose three free photos. The makeup, props, and follow-up photography were meticulously done, and the quality was excellent 👍. In summary, I am extremely satisfied. Thank you to every staff member. This was a spontaneous, short trip, a perfect reminder that plans often yield to the unexpected. Here I am in Xi'an, at the foot of the Qinling Mountains, longing to open my arms and embrace nature. I soaked in the cool breeze, the fragrant blossoms, and the gentle chirping of birds that seemed to whisper secrets. Every tiny flower here possesses a unique beauty; they don't need to be dazzling, yet their charm is utterly irresistible. It served as a beautiful reminder: you don't need to please anyone, and true happiness isn't given but earned through your own smile. I cherished the tranquility, the white swing nestled among flowers, and the vibrant green pomegranate trees adorned with their distinctive red blossoms. The shaded courtyard was a delight, featuring brightly colored rocking chairs, sun umbrellas, and a small pebble-built stream with stone and wooden bridges. In the stream, around twenty fluffy, super cute ducklings swam playfully, even hiding under lily pads when the sun grew strong. Two brown goats contentedly grazed on the lush green grass. I even playfully called out, 'Hello there, goat, can we be friends?' Haha, a unique soul indeed! The 'Eight-Point Black' rabbits were a constant favorite with the kids, and a proud white fox enjoyed its spacious cage – perhaps not its ideal home, but certainly one where its neighbors posed no challenge! Then there were the flocks of big white geese, honking away with gusto. There's also a vegetable garden, still growing. I hope to taste its fresh produce when I return – what a lovely thought! The evening scenery was enchanting, with countless small lights twinkling like stars in the sky. If you're feeling musical, you can even grab a microphone and sing a few songs. The rooms themselves were very comfortable, clean, and hygienic. For those with energy, brewing a pot of tea and chatting about life is a wonderful option. I love this place so much that I'll definitely be back. It's a perfect spot to record life's beautiful moments and ponder its many inspiring mottos.
**Facilities:** Excellent, adorning the rooms like works of art.
**Cleanliness:** Impeccable, with great attention to detail.
**Ambiance:** Beautiful and spacious. I particularly enjoyed brewing tea by the floor-to-ceiling window while admiring the natural scenery outside.

Once, there was a minor issue with the AC in my room, and after I called the front desk, staff came up to fix it almost immediately – the response time was excellent. This is by far the best hotel I've stayed at in recent years!
The entire hotel staff is highly professional, and their excellent service is evident at every step of your stay. While waiting for a ride-hailing car in the lobby, staff members would proactively approach me to ask about my destination and offer guidance for travel if I had questions. When I was taking photos in the lobby, staff members would also come over to help me find good angles and assist with the pictures. Whether it was checking in, having breakfast, or being at the hotel's pool or bar... in every scenario during my stay, I felt meticulous and thoughtful service, with many proactive and attentive touches that made for a very comfortable experience.
I especially want to thank Flora Qiu Jianyue from the concierge team. We had three suitcases with us, and the booked car couldn't fit all of them, so we needed to move luggage back and forth. It was the scorching midday sun in Xi'an, and I was waiting in the shade with my three children. I called her over to avoid the sun, but she insisted on staying in the scorching sun to look after our luggage, helped us move it back and forth, and arranged for a different car. This small detail was truly heartwarming.
The hotel's predecessor was the historic People's Grand Hotel, now part of the Sofitel Legend brand. The building itself boasts a rich historical heritage, but it's impeccably maintained. The furniture and public areas are kept in pristine condition, appearing new and polished, and everything is meticulously cared for, striking a perfect balance between old and new.
The breakfast selection is abundant, and the taste is excellent. The toiletries provided in the room are Maison Caulières 'L'Aube des Sens,' with a sophisticated and gentle fragrance that I really enjoyed.
