An iconic landmark, built at a time when Melbourne was one of the richest cities in the world due to nearby gold mining. The station mostly caters towards local suburbs rather than longer distances, but worth taking a look anyway.

This trip to the Melbourne Museum was really a surprise! The museum is so big that you can walk for half a day. My favorite is the new "Our Wondrous Planet" pavilion. It is not a dull slab, but is divided into four areas: Reef (coral reef), Forest (forest), Ice (glaciers) and Soil (soil). I appreciate its immersive projections, which are very realistic and spectacular! Also "Melbourne Gallery" (The Melbourne Story) is very exciting. It restores the way Melbourne used to be, you can see old houses, nostalgic trams and understand how the city has developed from before. As a tourist, you will feel more friendly to Melbourne after walking through this pavilion. The facilities are very new and the air conditioning is cool enough, definitely worth recommending!

How to Get to Melbourne CBD from Melbourne Airport?

How to Get to Melbourne CBD from Melbourne Airport?

Category:Melbourne Airport - Wikimedia Commons

Getting from Melbourne Airport (MEL) to the City Center (CBD) is straightforward, but it is important to note: there is currently no direct train or tram line from the airport. You must first take a bus or shuttle to reach the city’s rail and tram network.

Here are the best ways to reach the CBD, including how to connect to the tram system:

Melbourne Tram Map | SkyBus

The SkyBus "Melbourne City Express" is the most popular choice for travelers. It runs 24/7 and takes you directly to Southern Cross Station, the city’s major transport hub.

  • Route: Melbourne Airport $\rightarrow$ Southern Cross Station.
  • Duration: 20–30 minutes.
  • Cost: Approximately $23.90 AUD one-way.
  • Connecting to the Tram:
    • Southern Cross Station is located within the Free Tram Zone.
    • Once you exit the bus, walk to the tram stops on Spencer Street or Bourke Street.
    • You can board routes 86 or 96 (Bourke St) or 11 or 12 (Collins St) for free to reach your hotel, provided your destination is within the CBD.

It's not cheap, but since transportation options from Melbourne to the airport are limited, I think this bus is the best option. If you're lucky, you might even get a seat in the front row on the upper deck, so it's a fun ride like an amusement park ride!

    2. Get off at Broadmeadows Station (approx. 15-20 mins).
    3. Transfer to a city-bound train (Craigieburn Line).
  • Cost: $5.30 AUD (Price of a 2-hour myki fare).
  • Connecting to the Tram:
    • Take the train to Flinders Street Station or Melbourne Central.
    • Once you exit these stations, you are in the Free Tram Zone. You can jump on any tram (like the Route 35 City Circle) without tapping your myki card.

Service: The service was great, and the front desk staff were very enthusiastic. They even asked if I had a preferred room number or numbers I wanted to avoid, which was very considerate. Environment: However, the overall room size was very small. The room I was given seemed to be a disabled-access room, with a very large bathroom, but I didn't like that there were so many rooms on that floor. Facilities: There's a gym and a swimming pool, but the pool is tiny, almost not suitable for actual swimming. The hotel entrance is a bit hard to find, located in what's essentially an alley. But the surrounding area is quite lively, with plenty of coffee shops and shopping options.

The hotel is a bit old, but its location is a big plus – super convenient for shopping! The bed was comfy and soft, and the in-room facilities were well-equipped. No one offered to help with luggage, and the hotel has two entrances, but the staff didn't tell me which one was easier for catching a ride. When I came back by taxi, they didn't open the door for me, but when my friends dropped me off, they were very enthusiastic, opened the car door, and greeted us!

The room was decent, and the bed was incredibly soft, a real 'white-people bed' as they say, with excellent blackout curtains perfect for sleeping. We booked a one-bedroom suite, and the staff thoughtfully added an extra bed for us. The only downside was the somewhat chaotic front desk management. When we checked in, they told us the suite we booked was unavailable, claiming it was double-booked and offering us a standard room instead. It was the first time I'd heard of being downgraded because a room wasn't available! 😂 After I showed them our confirmation, they fiddled around a bit and eventually 'found' a suite for us. However, our booking included breakfast, and after the room change, we couldn't access the breakfast area the next day. We had to go back to the front desk to explain the situation again, and they finally gave us a card. On the second morning of our stay, we again couldn't get breakfast and spent another half an hour sorting it out. It was quite a hassle, making me feel like the money spent wasn't really worth it. Throughout the whole process, there was no mention of compensation; they just fixed the immediate problem. In previous hotels, when there was an issue, they usually provided a better experience after resolving it. As for the restaurant teacups, honestly, they weren't clean; many had coffee stains.

The rooms were spacious, well-equipped, clean, and tidy, with attentive service. My husband and I met our son, daughter-in-law, and grandson in Melbourne for a few days of sightseeing. We booked two deluxe king rooms, and the front desk staff warmly accommodated us by placing both rooms on the same floor, which was very convenient for us. The hotel's breakfast was high quality and plentiful, though perhaps slightly less extensive than some five-star hotels. The service staff were very attentive. The restaurant is on the top floor and offers expansive views. The hotel's pool water temperature was just perfect, which was a pleasant surprise! The hotel's location offers excellent transportation links; it's just a few minutes' walk to the free city circle tram stop, which can take you to many attractions.

It's quite a long walk from Southern Cross Station, and some of the paths are narrow, making it difficult to pull luggage. The front desk is on the second floor, and self-check-in is available. Since I arrived early and wanted to check in sooner, I paid an extra $25 per night to upgrade to a queen room with a desk. The deposit was $100. The room facilities were complete, though the shower head in the bathroom was fixed overhead and only allowed for direction adjustment. There were plenty of TV channels, including Phoenix TV for Chinese viewers. The staff on the ground floor were very friendly.

I recently stayed at Novotel Melbourne on Collins, and overall it was a great experience. Great hotel with excellent service and value for money. I accidentally left 700 AUD in the room safe after check-out and only realized it at the airport. The staff handled it quickly and professionally, and I got my money back without any hassle. The hotel feels very safe and quiet, the room is spacious and comfortable, and the front desk staff are friendly. The location is perfect — opposite Southern Cross Station, easy for trains and the airport, with a Coles supermarket across the street. The area is very walkable. We stayed altogether three nights here. The hotel was converted from a historical building dated back to 1890s . We enjoyed the stay-included breakfast at Alluvial restaurant. It got charming vibe. the King Classic room we stayed is spacious consider it is in zone 1 of Melbourne. The hotel is in walking distance to many of the Melbourne city attractions we are even able to take some rest in the room in our planned city walking trip in the middle of a very hot summer sunny day. The bathroom provides Byredo toiletries which we like. However, the decor is a bit dated and need refreshing and we are not happy with the service level of the staff. For example, the phone handfree function is not working properly; the safe is according to the hotel ”in the process of replacement” and not working either; the call to ”Instant Service” for help often took more than 5-seconds ring especially during the night time. There is even a false fire alert during one of the morning time of our stay. I doubt it is a standard of Intercontinental hotel or a 5-star rated hotel. For whom consider staying at this room type of this hotel, please note the windows is fixed and facing the hallway so the room has 1. no natural sunlight 2. no fresh air and 3. needs closing the curtains all the time if you prefer privacy. Another point worth noting is the bathroom floor is very slippery after bath, I would call it a death trap if you wear the one-off slippers that is provided in the room as you can easily get a slip and fall on the bathroom floor even for a grown adult.

The hotel's amenities are good; the room is spacious, and the bed and bedding are very comfortable. However, the minibar being located between the luggage rack and the bathroom is a bit odd and inconvenient, as you have to walk around to get hot water. The gym is excellent, with plenty of familiar equipment that's easy to use. There's also a swimming pool that looks to be about 20-25 meters long, and a tennis court on the 14th floor, which would be great for playing on a nice day. My room was on the 18th floor, and the view outside the window was nothing special. I'm sure there are rooms of the same type facing the church or garden, so I was a bit disappointed with the view I got. Breakfast was okay, but a bit lacking compared to what you'd find in China.

We stayed at the hotel as a family with two children for 4 nights and had a wonderful experience overall. The staff was very friendly and attentive, which made our stay even more enjoyable. The swimming pool, complete with a Jacuzzi, was a highlight for both the adults and the kids. The beds were comfortable, and the room cleaning service was thorough and efficient. The hotel’s location is excellent, making it convenient to explore the surrounding area. The only downside was the cost of laundry services—$8 in total ($4 for washing and $4 for drying)—which felt a bit steep. Overall, a great stay with excellent service and amenities. Highly recommended for families!

The facilities are complete and it's right next to a free tram stop, making transportation very convenient. However, check-in took quite a while. Even though I arrived early, I didn't get into my room until almost 3 PM. The room itself was a bit small and dark; the lighting wasn't very bright, and there was no openable window, so it felt stuffy. Cooking would definitely make the smell linger.

I booked my room for Australia Open very early back in September 2025 via trip.com. First they won't be able to check me in till after 3pm although the check-in time is 2pm. When they finally checked me in, they gave me one of the worst rooms, low floor, next to the elevator and housekeeping storage room. But the housekeeping people have done a great job daily!

Stayed here for a night out with friends. Hotel and room was lovely. Great location for us. Fleet bar was great, expensive but great although you do feel rushed through your food and drinks as they need you out on time for the next booking and they tell you 30mins before the end of your two hours that its last orders for drinks for you. Not very relaxing. Breakfast was great and plentiful. Staff very friendly and helpful, especially the front of house girl, she was lovely. Only negative they don't give you complimentary water in your room. $5 for a small can of still water. That's a rip off. They should provide free bottled water to their guests, its standard everywhere else. All in all a good stay and did what we needed it to do.

The hotel website stated parking was $35, but it actually cost $40. Self-parking involved driving our own car to the adjacent parking lot, and valet parking was $95. The hotel's location was very convenient for transport, and the unique breakfast was a definite highlight. However, despite requesting a high-floor, street-view room away from the elevators, we were assigned a room right by the elevators with only a limited street view, which somewhat diminished the five-star experience. There was no in-room washing machine, and we had to send out laundry at an extra cost, which was quite inconvenient. I only booked this hotel because I wanted to experience a five-star property; however, despite its five-star rating, it just felt like something was missing.

The car park is challenging to access, it took me awhile to get the lift door opened and to get in, really need to align the car properly. The room itself is comfortable, with great views of crown tower. The pots are not cleaned well though. The washer and dryer comes in handy. Good place to stay on the whole.

The Savoy Hotel was a jewel find after much searching for a convenient accommodation near the Southern Cross Station. It was just across the road! The staff were friendly and efficient. The room was spacious and clean. We had to request for slippers as some amenities are provided on request. Dinner was delicious 😋

It's a serviced apartment with basically no services. If you stay for a long time and prepare to cook your own food, you can. There are large supermarkets and Chinese supermarkets nearby. You can clean the bathroom yourself, wash the bath towels yourself, and there is a dishwasher and washing machine, which is also convenient.

The bathroom design wasn't very practical. The sink in the toilet was too small to be useful at all, and the vanity outside was a waste of space, so my friend and I ended up using the kitchen sink to wash up. The hotel's location is great, but being close to the railway, you inevitably hear train noises. It was very loud in both bedrooms. Also, not every room has air conditioning; only the bedrooms do. If you close the door to other rooms while sleeping, there's no AC, which led to me getting hotter and hotter one night and sweating a lot. Opening the window was too noisy, which was a really awkward situation. The front desk is only open from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM, which means if you leave your luggage, you have to pick it up promptly in the evening, otherwise you'll have to wait until the next day. I think the hotel's pricing, considering it's an apartment hotel, offers great value for money, especially with its excellent location. It's very convenient to get anywhere. There's a free tram stop right outside, and South Cross Station is just one street and one intersection away. Plus, both one-day tours we booked had nearby pick-up points, which was a nice surprise we didn't know before booking the tours.

The room was a bit small and the facilities were outdated. Besides one bottle of shampoo and body wash, no other disposable amenities were provided. The room's cleanliness was mediocre, comparable to a no-star guesthouse in China. However, the location is excellent, which is why I extended my stay for another 4 nights.

Our stay in a Luxury King Room at the Sofitel Melbourne on Collins was absolutely fantastic. The room was spacious and bright, with floor-to-ceiling windows offering expansive views of the Melbourne city skyline. The bedding was incredibly comfortable, ensuring a wonderful night's sleep. The executive lounge provided excellent service, with a wide variety of breakfast options, and the afternoon tea and evening snacks were equally delightful. The hotel's location is superb, right in the heart of Collins Street, making it easy to walk to major shopping centers and attractions. Public parking was also a great convenience for us as we were driving. We would definitely choose to stay here again on our next visit to Melbourne!

Melbourne City Backpackers is a top pick for solo budget travelers like me exploring Melbourne. Centrally located near Southern Cross Station and Queen Victoria Market, it's perfect for hopping on trams or the SkyBus from the airport, and just a short trip to Phillip Island penguins. Friendly staff shared insider tips on local cafes and sights, while the free breakfast kickstarted my days. The spacious dorms came with lockers (bring your own padlock), power outlets, and decent cleanliness—common areas stayed sociable without feeling chaotic. Kitchen facilities were well-equipped for self-catering on a student budget. Only minor downsides: street noise at night (earplugs helped) and no elevator, so pack light. Overall, unbeatable value at ~$30/night—highly recommend for backpackers wanting convenience and vibe! 9/10.

The room is big enough although a bit dated. The hotel is in a good location with different trams close by and just 15 minutes to the CBD. The gym is present with a fantastic view although very small. Our main issue was the strong cigarette smell for two nights in a row coming from the corridor into our room-we flagged this twice to reception but nothing was really done.

FAQs about Melbourne Tram Map

  • Are trams in Melbourne free?

You can use trams for free within the Free Tram Zone map [PDF], which includes the CBD and Docklands. You don't need a myki when only travelling within the Free Tram Zone, including on the City Circle Tram route. If you accidentally tap on with a myki card, you'll be charged a 2-hour fare for Zone 1+2.
  • How do tourists pay for trams in Melbourne?

To use public transport outside of the free tram zone, you need to purchase a myki card. You can purchase a myki card from retail outlets displaying the myki sign, visitor centres and at train stations. Use your myki card on trains, trams and buses. You'll need to load your card with some money to cover your fares.
  • Can I use my credit card instead of myki?

The introduction of ticketless travel was part of the contract awarded to Conduent when it took over the myki system, but it has faced delays. Victorians will soon be able to pay for public transport with a credit card or a smartphone, with a contactless payment trial entering the final stages of testing.
