Melbourne Free Tram Zone

Melbourne's Free Trams – a product of history
- Coverage: The Free Tram Zone covers the major areas of the Melbourne CBD, including key streets such as Flinders Street, Collins Street, Bourke Street, and Spring Street, as well as parts of the Docklands precinct.
- Riding Rules: Traveling by tram within the Free Tram Zone is completely free. You do not need to tap on with a myki card or purchase a ticket while staying within this zone.
- Popular Routes: Numerous tram lines operate within the free zone, including routes 11, 12, 35, 86, and 96. Of these, Route 35 is the famous City Circle Tram; it follows a loop around the city center and passes many major tourist attractions.

- "You’re in the Free Tram Zone": This means your travel is free and you don't need to tap on.

Melbourne Transport Card: The Myki Card

Myki Melbourne Online Ptv MYKI CARD QUICK CHECK OUT $20 VALUE $6 ...
If your itinerary takes you beyond the Free Tram Zone, you will need a myki card (Melbourne's public transport card).
This card works just like Sydney's Opal Card, Singapore’s ez-link, or Hong Kong’s Octopus card. Whether you plan to take a single trip or use public transport for an entire week, you must first purchase the card itself for $6 AUD (Adult) or $3 AUD (Child aged 5–18). Once you have the card, you can top it up with credit based on your travel needs.
How to Buy a Myki Card?

Myki and 3G – Daniel Bowen
You can pick up a physical card at hundreds of locations across the city.
- Melbourne Airport: Use the myki machines in Terminals 2, 3, and 4, or visit the SkyBus ticket booths.
- Major Train Stations: Staffed windows and myki machines are available at hubs like Flinders Street and Southern Cross Station.
- Retail Outlets: Almost all 7-Eleven stores and many newsagents with the "myki" sign sell and top up cards.
- PTV Hubs: Dedicated service centers at Southern Cross Station and other central locations.

Melbourne city flinders station , busy connection train station . close to ghetto river and cafes , 👍

awesome flinders station, that is a real iconic building at the central of Melbourne!

5/5
An iconic landmark, built at a time when Melbourne was one of the richest cities in the world due to nearby gold mining. The station mostly caters towards local suburbs rather than longer distances, but worth taking a look anyway.

It’s too bad that the breakwater where penguin watching can be done is under renovation. However fishing here is good during rising or high tide.

Nice laidback beach that gets crowded on hot summer days. It's easily accessible by tram from the city and there's a nice boardwalk.

4/5
It's really great to watch the sunset there. I think it's worth a visit.

5/5
St Kilda is about half an hour from the city, see the beach, the city from a distance, great sunset!

St. Kinda Beach is the nearest beach to Melbourne city, Melbourne is really a day to enjoy the spring, summer, autumn and winter four seasons, the morning in the city is very cool, to noon can be hot to the beach to swim, the sun is very good, the sun shines St Kinda Beach, the whole beach many handsome men and women enjoy sunbathing, and St. Kinda Pier can see penguins up close.

How to Get to Melbourne CBD from Melbourne Airport?

Category:Melbourne Airport - Wikimedia Commons
Getting from Melbourne Airport (MEL) to the City Center (CBD) is straightforward, but it is important to note: there is currently no direct train or tram line from the airport. You must first take a bus or shuttle to reach the city’s rail and tram network.
Here are the best ways to reach the CBD, including how to connect to the tram system:
Melbourne Tram Map | SkyBus
The SkyBus "Melbourne City Express" is the most popular choice for travelers. It runs 24/7 and takes you directly to Southern Cross Station, the city’s major transport hub.
- Route: Melbourne Airport $\rightarrow$ Southern Cross Station.
- Duration: 20–30 minutes.
- Cost: Approximately $23.90 AUD one-way.
- Connecting to the Tram:
- Southern Cross Station is located within the Free Tram Zone.
- Once you exit the bus, walk to the tram stops on Spencer Street or Bourke Street.
- You can board routes 86 or 96 (Bourke St) or 11 or 12 (Collins St) for free to reach your hotel, provided your destination is within the CBD.

The skybus is highly convenient, cheap and reliable way to travel between Melbourne Airport (MEL) and the CBD. Moreover, it's operating 24/7 with high frequency
4/5
Overall, it's good and convenient, but you must leave early. I encountered a vehicle breakdown and had to wait for the next one, which delayed me by 20 minutes. So, you need to be mindful of timing, not just make sure it's perfect. If something goes wrong, it's not good! Overall, it's good and faster than a taxi. Many taxis, in order to save money, don't care about people rushing to catch their flights and will only try to avoid paying fares. Skybus, in cooperation with the government, doesn't have this problem. However, the difference between friendly and unfriendly staff is significant!
5/5
Very convenient and hassle-free. We purchased our SkyBus tickets online and simply showed the QR code for scanning before boarding. The process was quick and smooth, allowing us to hop straight onto the bus without any issues. Highly recommended for a stress-free airport transfer.
5/5
SkyBus is a very convenient and reliable airport transfer service between Melbourne Airport and Southern Cross Station in the CBD. The buses are frequent, usually clean, and have enough space for luggage, making the journey smooth and comfortable.
The trip takes around 20–30 minutes depending on traffic, and the service runs almost 24/7, which is very helpful for early morning or late-night flights. Tickets are easy to purchase online or at the airport. The bus arrives at Southern Cross Station in Melbourne city center, which is very convenient for connecting to trains, trams, and other transport.
Overall, it is a fast, affordable, and stress-free way to travel between the airport and city. I also recommend sitting on the upper deck front seats for a great view of the city during the ride. Highly recommended for both tourists and business travelers.
5/5
Very convenient booking with Trip! And the price is cheaper than other platforms. It’s not hard to use too you can just show the QR to the staff. And if you book 2 ways(+go back to airport) you can just show the same QR. It worked well and no problem.

If you are on a budget and want to use the standard public transport fare ($5.30), use this method.
- Route: 1. Catch the 901 Bus (towards Frankston) from the airport terminal.
2. Get off at Broadmeadows Station (approx. 15-20 mins).
3. Transfer to a city-bound train (Craigieburn Line). - Cost: $5.30 AUD (Price of a 2-hour myki fare).
- Connecting to the Tram:
- Take the train to Flinders Street Station or Melbourne Central.
- Once you exit these stations, you are in the Free Tram Zone. You can jump on any tram (like the Route 35 City Circle) without tapping your myki card.
Melbourne Tram Map | Rideshare / Taxi
- Cost: $60–$80 AUD depending on traffic and surge pricing.
- Connecting to the Tram: Have the driver drop you at your accommodation. Once you've dropped off your bags, you can walk into the street and use the Free Tram Zone for all your city exploration.

The hotel's location is pretty good. The one-day tour I booked met right outside the Windsor Hotel, which was only a few minutes' walk away. Both Red Apple and Green Apple supermarkets are within walking distance, and Chinatown isn't far either, making evenings very lively. The hotel facilities are admittedly a bit old, but the hygiene is decent. Breakfast is just okay, but it's filling, and surprisingly, they even offered congee. When checking out, since I paid a cash deposit, I had to wait a while for them to inspect the room before I could get my money back and leave. After the room check, I realized I'd left a piece of clothing in the room. The staff brought it down for me, neatly folded and presented it with both hands, which I really appreciated!SOLD OUT

The hotel is a bit old, but its location is a big plus – super convenient for shopping! The bed was comfy and soft, and the in-room facilities were well-equipped. No one offered to help with luggage, and the hotel has two entrances, but the staff didn't tell me which one was easier for catching a ride. When I came back by taxi, they didn't open the door for me, but when my friends dropped me off, they were very enthusiastic, opened the car door, and greeted us!SOLD OUT

The room was decent, and the bed was incredibly soft, a real 'white-people bed' as they say, with excellent blackout curtains perfect for sleeping. We booked a one-bedroom suite, and the staff thoughtfully added an extra bed for us. The only downside was the somewhat chaotic front desk management. When we checked in, they told us the suite we booked was unavailable, claiming it was double-booked and offering us a standard room instead. It was the first time I'd heard of being downgraded because a room wasn't available! 😂 After I showed them our confirmation, they fiddled around a bit and eventually 'found' a suite for us. However, our booking included breakfast, and after the room change, we couldn't access the breakfast area the next day. We had to go back to the front desk to explain the situation again, and they finally gave us a card. On the second morning of our stay, we again couldn't get breakfast and spent another half an hour sorting it out. It was quite a hassle, making me feel like the money spent wasn't really worth it. Throughout the whole process, there was no mention of compensation; they just fixed the immediate problem. In previous hotels, when there was an issue, they usually provided a better experience after resolving it.
As for the restaurant teacups, honestly, they weren't clean; many had coffee stains.FromAU$235

Affordable and great service and really great spaces in the room.
Only thing I’d nitpick is the shower pressure (and temperature - it’s hard sometimes to find the perfect temperature sometimes too hot sometimes too cold), and the bed frame was flimsy.

I recently stayed at Novotel Melbourne on Collins, and overall it was a great experience. The location is unbeatable — right in the heart of the city, with easy access to shops, cafes, and public transport.
The rooms were clean, modern, and comfortable, with large windows overlooking Collins Street. The bed was very cozy and ensured a good night’s sleep. Staff were friendly and helpful, especially at check-in — they made everything smooth and welcoming.
Breakfast had a good variety of options, and the dining area was bright and pleasant. The gym and facilities were well-maintained, though the pool was a bit small.
Overall, it’s an excellent choice for both business and leisure stays. The combination of great location, comfort, and professional service makes it one of the best value stays in Melbourne CBD.SOLD OUT

Honestly, I found it just okay... The facilities are quite old. On the first day, my room wasn't cleaned, and when I asked the front desk for some shower gel, it took them ages to bring it. Eventually, they knocked, and when I opened the door, I saw three small bottles just lying on the floor outside. On the second day, the trash can in the bathroom had its liner separated from the bin, and there was no trash bag inside; the liner was just sitting on the toilet. What was most frustrating was encountering a double check-in... Ugh, anyway, the front desk staff really weren't very enthusiastic... Maybe it was because they saw an Asian face.SOLD OUT

The hotel was well-located and the staff were friendly, so overall we had a pleasant stay. However, there were a few disappointing points. We booked a family room for six people for three nights, but we were actually given adjacent connecting rooms. Also, the connecting room's key was not unlocked, so we had to ask someone to open it for us after we entered. Amenities were not provided for the number of guests, so we had to ask for more. Great location only two or three minutes from Southern Cross Station. Staff lovely and welcoming. Room small but comfy as was the bed. Bath in the bathroom but no plug (none for the hand basin either) so what's the point? Grouting on tiles where the shower is needs scrubbing or replacing, not hygienic. No milk in the fridge but was available from reception - BUT had to be paid for (never in may years of travel had to pay for milk in a hotel). No Hotel directory either physical or on the TV so didn't know if breakfast was still a available in the ground floor cafe and WiFi details not provided (my device located it for me) So a bit of attention to detail is needed to make this a very nice experience because it is a good hotel and easy to get to.SOLD OUT

The bathroom design wasn't very practical. The sink in the toilet was too small to be useful at all, and the vanity outside was a waste of space, so my friend and I ended up using the kitchen sink to wash up. The hotel's location is great, but being close to the railway, you inevitably hear train noises. It was very loud in both bedrooms. Also, not every room has air conditioning; only the bedrooms do. If you close the door to other rooms while sleeping, there's no AC, which led to me getting hotter and hotter one night and sweating a lot. Opening the window was too noisy, which was a really awkward situation. The front desk is only open from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM, which means if you leave your luggage, you have to pick it up promptly in the evening, otherwise you'll have to wait until the next day. I think the hotel's pricing, considering it's an apartment hotel, offers great value for money, especially with its excellent location. It's very convenient to get anywhere. There's a free tram stop right outside, and South Cross Station is just one street and one intersection away. Plus, both one-day tours we booked had nearby pick-up points, which was a nice surprise we didn't know before booking the tours.FromAU$28

The unit we stayed in was huge and clean aside from black moulds in the shower , the bath tub was quite high and it is easy for anyone to fall or hurt themselves especially when feet are wet from having a shower. The small rubbish bin on the toilet was rusty. The fridge was clean but the 6 little tubs of milk that was in the fridge were off . We visited the gym and pool, the stairs going to the area has strong smell of chlorine and no ventilation. Feels a bit claustrophobic and suffocating. The smell gave me headache and a respiratory issue, been coughing the whole night .I love the cafe and restaurant, the butter chicken was good. The hotel don't provide drinking water bottles, they said they sell it for $4.50 for every 500 ml bottle which is pricey. The room comfortably accommodates 6 people with three double beds, and the bedding is very clean. Each floor has a desk with charging points. The WiFi speed is decent. Breakfast includes sandwiches, toast, milk, coffee, cereal, and unlimited drinks. There's also a gas stove, which is great if you like to cook your own meals, like boiling an egg. The living room on the first floor is spacious enough for dozens of people to have meetings or chats. A major plus is its 8-minute walk to Southern Cross Station, located right in the city center on King Street.
**Environment:** Quiet, safe, and convenient.
**Cleanliness:** The bathroom is very clean, gets daily cleaning, and has no unpleasant odors.SOLD OUT

I was pleasantly surprised by my stay here. It's about a 20-minute tram ride from Melbourne city center (which isn't too far, but the tram is quite slow), then a 3-5 minute walk. The area is very quiet. The double room was very spacious, I'd estimate around 30 square meters. Even with two beds, there was still plenty of extra space. There's a walk-in closet-like area connecting to the bathroom (which is relatively small). The fridge is tucked away in a cabinet. All toiletries were provided except for a toothbrush and toothpaste. For Melbourne, where space is at a premium, this location and room size at only 500 RMB a night is a fantastic deal. I had to pay a 100 AUD deposit upon check-in, which was refunded on the day of check-out.SOLD OUT

Because my friend's house is in the apartment opposite, I chose to book this hotel. It looks like an ancient building, but the actual guest room department lives in the building behind. There are many guest rooms on the first floor, so the room is small, but it is very clean and has a lot of hot water. Anyway, I just come back to sleep every day. The location is good and it is convenient to travel.SOLD OUT

The hotel kitchen is fantastic, well-stocked with all sorts of amenities. The living room is also great, with plenty of space and a comfortable, open feel. The bathroom is excellent too, providing a variety of toiletries. While the hotel doesn't have its own private parking, it has a partnership with First Parking for AUD 30 a day, offering unlimited in-and-out access, which is convenient. You just need to walk a few minutes to reach the hotel. It would be even better if the washing machine and dryer were separate units.SOLD OUT

FAQs about Melbourne Tram Map
Are trams in Melbourne free?
You can use trams for free within the Free Tram Zone map [PDF], which includes the CBD and Docklands. You don't need a myki when only travelling within the Free Tram Zone, including on the City Circle Tram route. If you accidentally tap on with a myki card, you'll be charged a 2-hour fare for Zone 1+2.How do tourists pay for trams in Melbourne?
To use public transport outside of the free tram zone, you need to purchase a myki card. You can purchase a myki card from retail outlets displaying the myki sign, visitor centres and at train stations. Use your myki card on trains, trams and buses. You'll need to load your card with some money to cover your fares. Can I use my credit card instead of myki?
The introduction of ticketless travel was part of the contract awarded to Conduent when it took over the myki system, but it has faced delays. Victorians will soon be able to pay for public transport with a credit card or a smartphone, with a contactless payment trial entering the final stages of testing.
