An iconic landmark, built at a time when Melbourne was one of the richest cities in the world due to nearby gold mining. The station mostly caters towards local suburbs rather than longer distances, but worth taking a look anyway.

How to Get to Melbourne CBD from Melbourne Airport?

How to Get to Melbourne CBD from Melbourne Airport?

Category:Melbourne Airport - Wikimedia Commons

Getting from Melbourne Airport (MEL) to the City Center (CBD) is straightforward, but it is important to note: there is currently no direct train or tram line from the airport. You must first take a bus or shuttle to reach the city’s rail and tram network.

Here are the best ways to reach the CBD, including how to connect to the tram system:

Melbourne Tram Map | SkyBus

The SkyBus "Melbourne City Express" is the most popular choice for travelers. It runs 24/7 and takes you directly to Southern Cross Station, the city’s major transport hub.

  • Route: Melbourne Airport $\rightarrow$ Southern Cross Station.
  • Duration: 20–30 minutes.
  • Cost: Approximately $23.90 AUD one-way.
  • Connecting to the Tram:
    • Southern Cross Station is located within the Free Tram Zone.
    • Once you exit the bus, walk to the tram stops on Spencer Street or Bourke Street.
    • You can board routes 86 or 96 (Bourke St) or 11 or 12 (Collins St) for free to reach your hotel, provided your destination is within the CBD.

The skybus is highly convenient, cheap and reliable way to travel between Melbourne Airport (MEL) and the CBD. Moreover, it's operating 24/7 with high frequency
review picture

Overall, it's good and convenient, but you must leave early. I encountered a vehicle breakdown and had to wait for the next one, which delayed me by 20 minutes. So, you need to be mindful of timing, not just make sure it's perfect. If something goes wrong, it's not good! Overall, it's good and faster than a taxi. Many taxis, in order to save money, don't care about people rushing to catch their flights and will only try to avoid paying fares. Skybus, in cooperation with the government, doesn't have this problem. However, the difference between friendly and unfriendly staff is significant!
review picture
5/5
Very convenient and hassle-free. We purchased our SkyBus tickets online and simply showed the QR code for scanning before boarding. The process was quick and smooth, allowing us to hop straight onto the bus without any issues. Highly recommended for a stress-free airport transfer.
review picture
5/5
SkyBus is a very convenient and reliable airport transfer service between Melbourne Airport and Southern Cross Station in the CBD. The buses are frequent, usually clean, and have enough space for luggage, making the journey smooth and comfortable. The trip takes around 20–30 minutes depending on traffic, and the service runs almost 24/7, which is very helpful for early morning or late-night flights. Tickets are easy to purchase online or at the airport. The bus arrives at Southern Cross Station in Melbourne city center, which is very convenient for connecting to trains, trams, and other transport. Overall, it is a fast, affordable, and stress-free way to travel between the airport and city. I also recommend sitting on the upper deck front seats for a great view of the city during the ride. Highly recommended for both tourists and business travelers.

Melbourne Tram Map | Public Bus + Train

If you are on a budget and want to use the standard public transport fare ($5.30), use this method.

  • Route: 1. Catch the 901 Bus (towards Frankston) from the airport terminal.
    2. Get off at Broadmeadows Station (approx. 15-20 mins).
    3. Transfer to a city-bound train (Craigieburn Line).
  • Cost: $5.30 AUD (Price of a 2-hour myki fare).
  • Connecting to the Tram:
    • Take the train to Flinders Street Station or Melbourne Central.
    • Once you exit these stations, you are in the Free Tram Zone. You can jump on any tram (like the Route 35 City Circle) without tapping your myki card.

Melbourne Tram Map | Rideshare / Taxi

  • Cost: $60–$80 AUD depending on traffic and surge pricing.
  • Connecting to the Tram: Have the driver drop you at your accommodation. Once you've dropped off your bags, you can walk into the street and use the Free Tram Zone for all your city exploration.

We loved our accomodation at Stamford Little Collins! Friendly helpful staff, great rooms, cot for baby, great pool & spa - indoor so warm enough in cold. Only suggestion for improvement is we had a 1 bedroom had a small kitchen which was great, but nothing to cook with - no small saucepan, container for microwaving, peelers, small cutting knife, chopping board, teatowels, it would be great if those things could be available so we could have made better use of the facilities. But otherwise, great staff - amazing location, can highly recommend right near everything - coffees, restaurants, theatres, shopping etc.

This hotel was the most satisfying stay during my entire trip to Australia and New Zealand. Its central location makes it incredibly convenient to get anywhere. The entrance is a bit small, so you might miss it if you're not paying attention. The guy at the front desk on the ground floor was tall and handsome – quite the eye-catcher! The room itself was spacious, with new and complete facilities. The bed was super comfortable, and everything was spotless.

The place is a bit dated, specially noticeable in the pool/gym amenities. However, what it lacks in newness, it makes up with excellent service. My child was celebrating her birthday and was surprised with a birthday treat during breakfast. This may be a small thing, but we appreciated it as she is anaphylactic to dairy and the staff made sure everything on her cake was dairy-free. We were also allowed to check in a bit later.

No microwave, which wasn't very convenient. Being right next to Chinatown, dining and shopping were super easy. You don't need to speak Chinese at all if you don't want to. You can hear the tram sounds 🚃. At night, you can also hear the street performers. For me, it was quite nice and actually helped me sleep. Two free drinks per stay. The gym is tiny and smells bad.

We regularly stay at this accommodation for our special occasions whenever we visit Melbourne, due to our previous enjoyable experiences, its convenient location, and the added benefit of discounted parking. However, our recent stay was disappointing compared to earlier visits. The level of service has declined, with no greeting or recognition as returning guests, which we had appreciated before. We were also assigned a very small room, the worst we have stayed in at this property. While the location and parking remain strong advantages, the drop in service and room quality made this stay less enjoyable than expected.

Honestly, I found it just okay... The facilities are quite old. On the first day, my room wasn't cleaned, and when I asked the front desk for some shower gel, it took them ages to bring it. Eventually, they knocked, and when I opened the door, I saw three small bottles just lying on the floor outside. On the second day, the trash can in the bathroom had its liner separated from the bin, and there was no trash bag inside; the liner was just sitting on the toilet. What was most frustrating was encountering a double check-in... Ugh, anyway, the front desk staff really weren't very enthusiastic... Maybe it was because they saw an Asian face.

This hotel is perfectly located if arriving into Melbourne on the train from Sydney. The hotel let me check in early at no extra charge. I found the staff to be cheerful, pleasant and very helpful. The room was spacious and very clean. The coffee and tea facilities were in the room but hidden in the cupboard next to the fridge and the drinking glasses were stored in the fridge! (Never seen that done before). The swimming pool was a nice added bonus and breakfast, although very basic, was adequate. [I only stayed one night, any longer that breakfast would certainly be classed as extremely boring!😜]. I did enjoy my stay and for one or two nights would definitely stay there again.

I booked this hotel during a Ctrip promotion, and honestly, the price was a steal at 1000/night. First, the pros: Location: It's right in the city center, first ring, free zone. You can take the tram for a free city walk. If you're on a day tour, the bus pick-up point is just a two-minute walk away. The front desk staff, Holy, and the senior gentleman from concierge were both very nice. Now, for the cons: The coffee spoon wasn't clean, it was dirty. The minibar fridge had cooling issues; the bottom was full of water. These, I could overlook. However, and seriously, as a Hyatt Globalist, I rarely stay at InterContinental, and I have never, in all my previous experiences, encountered an unlocked room door. I left my room early Friday morning for a day tour and returned at 9:30 PM to find my room door unlocked, just as pictured. I was shocked. The next day, I spoke to the duty manager, and they checked the surveillance footage, confirming that no one had entered my room. But my stay experience was truly poor. Such carelessness, forgetting to lock the guest's door after cleaning. Plus, this hotel's elevators don't require a room card swipe. At 9:30 PM, both the front desk and concierge were empty, making it easy for anyone to access any floor. I somewhat regret not spending a bit more to stay at the Grand Hyatt. Also, I heard this hotel is rebranding to Regent, oh my! InterContinental truly feels like a makeshift operation. To think they dare to rebrand to Regent like this! This hotel usually sells at the same price as the Grand Hyatt, and if it weren't for this promotion, I definitely wouldn't have chosen it. InterContinental left such a terrible impression on me; it's really hard not to come here and complain.

The hotel's concierge service was very efficient, from helping with luggage upon arrival to valet parking, everything was quick and seamless. Unfortunately, the room I was assigned on the night of my check-in was very noisy, especially noticeable in the latter half of the night with noise levels exceeding 50dB. Initially, the hotel claimed they were fully booked and had no other rooms available. However, it wasn't until 3 AM that they informed me someone hadn't checked in and I was then moved to a room of the same category.

Great location only two or three minutes from Southern Cross Station. Staff lovely and welcoming. Room small but comfy as was the bed. Bath in the bathroom but no plug (none for the hand basin either) so what's the point? Grouting on tiles where the shower is needs scrubbing or replacing, not hygienic. No milk in the fridge but was available from reception - BUT had to be paid for (never in may years of travel had to pay for milk in a hotel). No Hotel directory either physical or on the TV so didn't know if breakfast was still a available in the ground floor cafe and WiFi details not provided (my device located it for me) So a bit of attention to detail is needed to make this a very nice experience because it is a good hotel and easy to get to.

Good location right opposite Flinders Street Station and on the free tram line, spacious rooms and lots of bathrooms available, friendly staff and lots of free activities to get involved in which was a good way to meet people. Lift to all floors and staff on site 24 hours. Rooms and bathrooms didn’t seem to be cleaned much however, showers had hair in the drain the whole time, and general mess on bedroom floors not ever hoovered up in the 5 days I was there. The unit we stayed in was huge and clean aside from black moulds in the shower , the bath tub was quite high and it is easy for anyone to fall or hurt themselves especially when feet are wet from having a shower. The small rubbish bin on the toilet was rusty. The fridge was clean but the 6 little tubs of milk that was in the fridge were off . We visited the gym and pool, the stairs going to the area has strong smell of chlorine and no ventilation. Feels a bit claustrophobic and suffocating. The smell gave me headache and a respiratory issue, been coughing the whole night .I love the cafe and restaurant, the butter chicken was good. The hotel don't provide drinking water bottles, they said they sell it for $4.50 for every 500 ml bottle which is pricey. The receptionists need to put a smile in their face they look very serious, kinda freaky especially in the hotel or unfamiliar place, peace to the receptionists. Good location. Just in front of the tram stop Russel Street on Bourke. There's a Thai & Japanese Restaurant downstairs as well. Front desk is extremely helpful & jolly. Bed is just right. Room is clean. There's a hair dryer, iron, safe, but no toothbrush, I didn't ask, but maybe it's upon request. The good thing about Citadines on Bourke is they have a full kitchen with plates & silverware. We didn't use it, but having a microwave is definitely a plus. They didn't clean daily, but maybe you can ask. But it wasn't an issue for us. We didn't need it anyway. Overall it was a good place to stay in Melbourne, we feel it's very central and near good places to be at.

I had a wonderful stay at this hotel. The staff were incredibly welcoming, professional, and always ready to help with anything I needed. The room was spotless, comfortable, and well-maintained, with all the amenities I could ask for. The location was also excellent — convenient and close to everything I wanted to explore. I especially appreciated the peaceful atmosphere and the attention to detail throughout the property. Overall, it was a relaxing and enjoyable experience, and I would happily stay here again. Highly recommended for anyone looking for comfort, great service, and a pleasant stay.

Location is fantastic, just a few steps away from the tram line and city loop. Strong artificial scent at the foyer - I wasn’t a fan. Bathroom was wet when we came but we were so late to check in after flight delays that we left it and cleaned it ourselves. Next day, upon our return to the hotel after a long day we found the same mess plus toilet bowl soiled. Noisy AC with a dripping annoying sound at night. Wouldn’t recommend it apart from its location.

The hotel is clean and very busy during the morning time. Dont say about the reception area because it just too crowded. The fact that they provide luggage storage before check in also very helpful for us. The only cons is the hotel is too busy and full with people, there were people open/close the door non stop for 10minutes with loud voices in front of our room around 5pm.

The neighbours made a noise complaint which resulted in a letter from management! We let the front desk know our friend was coming over to visit since we haven't seen him for a few years.. we were reminded by the manager on duty that only 2 were staying in our room.. he obviously didn't get the memo that he was only visiting and maybe the Savoy isn't the place for couple to visit if the walls are so thin the neighbours can't sleep! The second night was way louder in our room when It was only the 2 of us making (couples noise) (if U know what I mean) but nobody came knocking on the door or give us a written warning for being too loud!! Not aloud to have guests over and laugh with them! We didn't put our room next to the world's lightest sleeper and grumpy! We only picked the room off the website

The room comfortably accommodates 6 people with three double beds, and the bedding is very clean. Each floor has a desk with charging points. The WiFi speed is decent. Breakfast includes sandwiches, toast, milk, coffee, cereal, and unlimited drinks. There's also a gas stove, which is great if you like to cook your own meals, like boiling an egg. The living room on the first floor is spacious enough for dozens of people to have meetings or chats. A major plus is its 8-minute walk to Southern Cross Station, located right in the city center on King Street. **Environment:** Quiet, safe, and convenient. **Cleanliness:** The bathroom is very clean, gets daily cleaning, and has no unpleasant odors.

This is a great hotel! While it's not in the city center, the nearby tram station makes getting around incredibly convenient. The interior is very clean and well-maintained. The front desk staff were warm and helpful. Being able to book a special offer room for around 400 a night makes it incredibly good value for money in Melbourne.

It's about 20 minutes' drive from the city center. There are many trams available, so the transportation is quite convenient. The room is quite clean, the space is large, and the environment is quiet. Some rooms have washing machines and simple cooking utensils, making it convenient for long-term stays. Unfortunately, there are no large shopping malls nearby. For shopping and dining, you have to go to the city center or distant towns.

Traveling with my parents, they were incredibly pleased with this apartment hotel. We had a two-bedroom, one-living room unit with a small kitchen, and the amenities were incredibly comprehensive. It had everything: a microwave, washing machine, dishwasher, refrigerator, and more, making it super convenient for laundry and cooking. The location was also excellent, with a trendy cafe right across from the hotel. The hotel staff even gave us a welcome gift upon check-in, which was a lovely touch! We were very satisfied!

FAQs about Melbourne Tram Map

  • Are trams in Melbourne free?

You can use trams for free within the Free Tram Zone map [PDF], which includes the CBD and Docklands. You don't need a myki when only travelling within the Free Tram Zone, including on the City Circle Tram route. If you accidentally tap on with a myki card, you'll be charged a 2-hour fare for Zone 1+2.
  • How do tourists pay for trams in Melbourne?

To use public transport outside of the free tram zone, you need to purchase a myki card. You can purchase a myki card from retail outlets displaying the myki sign, visitor centres and at train stations. Use your myki card on trains, trams and buses. You'll need to load your card with some money to cover your fares.
  • Can I use my credit card instead of myki?

The introduction of ticketless travel was part of the contract awarded to Conduent when it took over the myki system, but it has faced delays. Victorians will soon be able to pay for public transport with a credit card or a smartphone, with a contactless payment trial entering the final stages of testing.
