How Many Digits in a Hong Kong Phone Number?

The short answer is eight, not counting the +852 if you’re dialling from outside the country. When you add that country code, you should be dialling 11 digits in total.

There are a couple of exceptions to that rule though. Hong Kong’s toll-free numbers starting with 800 have nine digits, and then there are the short codes like 999 (emergency services), which contain only three digits.

So if a regular number of a hotel or tour contact you've saved only has seven digits, you’re missing a number, so you’ll have to go back to check it against the original.

Hong Kong Phone Number Examples

You'll see the same Hong Kong phone number written a few different ways on websites, booking confirmations and business cards. For example, here we have the Hong Kong Tourism Board's visitor hotline:

  • +852 2508 1234

My advice is to save every Hong Kong number you need with +852 in front of it. Your WhatsApp, still tied to your Aussie number, will pick up the contact straight away, which is handy given how many restaurants and tour operators take bookings by WhatsApp in Hong Kong.

The windows were forcefully locked, and there was a very strong odor. As soon as you stepped out of the elevator, there was a stale carpet smell, and the room had a medicinal wine smell. The next day, I changed to a slightly better room, but it still had a very strong odor. The air conditioning was old and noisy; it was stuffy without it and loud with it. If it weren't for the good location and the need for reception, I definitely wouldn't stay in such an old hotel. The service was inflexible. I left my card inside, and housekeeping couldn't verify my information and open the door; I had to go down in person to verify and get the card. On the first day of check-in, there was a coffee stain on the bottom layer of the pen holder, which clearly hadn't been cleaned. They're just relying on their old age and brand to sell rooms.

Facilities: The room was smaller than expected and not very new, but I guess that's to be expected in a place where space is at a premium. Environment: The location is excellent, not far from the MTR station, and within walking distance of the Avenue of Stars. Service: Very good. The front desk was efficient and thoughtfully provided a universal adapter. The cleaning staff were also very enthusiastic.

The room was as good as ever, and Tim or Timothy at the front desk provided excellent service. He even let me go ahead when another guest tried to cut in line during check-in, which I really appreciate. I chose this place for its convenient location and because I love the breakfast here. This time, I also checked out the hotel bar, and guests get a 15% discount on food and beverage services, which is a nice touch. The gym is well-equipped. I've stayed here several times but haven't had a chance to join the morning Tai Chi class by the pool yet. I hope to experience it sometime in the future.

This hotel is located in Mong Kok East, not too far from the MTR station and conveniently close to bus stops. The biggest advantage for us was the exceptionally spacious room, which is a huge plus when traveling with children! I carefully checked, and thankfully, there were no bed bugs, and the bed was very clean. We even got a free upgrade. The only minor point was the lack of bottled water, only filtered water, but it's drinkable if boiled. Overall, it was excellent, and I would choose this hotel again when visiting with children.

Great experience! The location is excellent, just a few minutes' walk to Jordan MTR station. I was surprised by the low ratings I saw previously, as I personally think it meets a 4-star standard. For this location, a price of around 400 is definitely worth it, and it's certainly better than a guesthouse. The room is a bit small, but it's very clean, and there's no old hotel smell like some mentioned. The air conditioning runs 24/7, which is very comfortable. I recommend a nearby place called ”Milk Ice Room”; the food is delicious and affordable (50 RMB per person is enough for a meal, and you get free milk tea with a main course). It's open from 7 AM to 9 PM, so you can eat there anytime.

It’s pretty OK for a shorter vacation stay, location allows convenient for exploring with a lot of public transportation points within 10-15 min walk. So, be out all day, shower, sleep, repeat. Had a chance to see two rooms, as originally I was checking-in to a room with a mirror instead of window (while I booked a city view room), which was spacious, tile floor, overall OK. I asked for amendment and was “upgraded” to the room in the pictures with huge windows and carpet which can be tricky in humid weather and overall a hell to keep clean in hotels. Tricky part is that some rooms are smoker rooms and the ventilation is shared throughout the whole hotel (or the room nextdoor ignored the ban) and at one point it hit the room. Would I pick the hotel for a week stay? Most probably not. But I keep it as a backup for 1-2 nights.

I found this hotel on Ctrip and booked an executive suite. After checking in, I was pleasantly surprised by how spacious the room was, complete with a sofa, coffee table, and a desk. Breakfast was also very extensive, exceeding my expectations, making it great value for money. The hotel's location is convenient for dining and shopping. Spacious and Modern Rooms: In the notoriously compact Hong Kong, this hotel's rooms are frequently praised for being ”spacious,” ”new,” and ”clean.” Many guests mention being able to get out of bed from three sides and fully open their suitcases, ensuring a comfortable and unconfined stay. Views and Soundproofing: Most rooms feature 180-degree floor-to-ceiling windows, offering excellent mountain or river views. The hotel also boasts excellent soundproofing; even during typhoons, guests report barely hearing any wind, guaranteeing a quiet and restful environment. Comprehensive Facilities: Rooms typically come equipped with a mini-fridge, electric kettle, and coffee capsule machine. The hotel also provides a communal kitchen, a 24-hour study room, a gym, a heated swimming pool, and a self-service laundry room, catering to guests' various needs.

1. **Super convenient transportation.** Just a 5-minute walk from Tin Hau MTR station Exit A. It's also great for a stroll to Causeway Bay (only 20 minutes at most), letting you soak in the authentic Hong Kong vibe along the way. 2. **Plenty of food options nearby, and many convenient stores.** Around the corner, you can find a cha chaan teng (Hong Kong-style cafe), a must-try when visiting Hong Kong, as well as old-fashioned bakeries. 3. **The staff are incredibly nice and friendly, with prompt and efficient service.** This is precisely why, after all these years, I still choose to stay at The Empire Hotel Causeway Bay. From the moment I walked in, through check-in, and until departure, every interaction was friendly. The staff's age range is quite broad, but everyone I encountered was so nice. I truly admire their constant energy. See you next time! o(*////▽////*)q (I didn't take any pictures of the room, so here's a photo of some delicious food I had at a nearby cha chaan teng.)

Tsim Sha Tsui Hong Kong|2.13km from downtown
I stayed at this hotel over 10 years ago. Although it has been renovated, the service is noticeably worse than before. Here are a few points: 1. At 3 PM check-in, no rooms were available. We only got our room key at 4:30 PM. 2. Upon entering the room, we found a used band-aid from the previous guests still on the floor (which was quite unpleasant) and not cleaned up. 3. Loud music from a club downstairs went on until past midnight, making it impossible for us and our child to get any rest. Even though it was a weekend and there might have been events, it was simply unacceptable. 4. There's also something that made us very angry, and although it's not directly related to the hotel, I want to share it so future guests can be aware. The taxis outside the hotel – we might have encountered an extreme driver, not necessarily representative of most, but I'm just sharing my personal experience. We took a taxi from the hotel in Tsim Sha Tsui to Sogo in Causeway Bay. Without informing us, the driver took a detour over the cross-harbor bridge. I only found this out later when the price seemed wrong. He didn't take the usual tunnel, and as a result, the fare was HKD 193. Taking the tunnel usually costs around HKD 65, which we had paid before. So, I want to remind future guests to be careful when taking taxis. However, there was one thing we were satisfied with: the housekeeping staff on our floor had surprisingly good service. They always smiled, greeted us, and said hello.

We had a great stay at The Kowloon Hotel in Tsim Sha Tsui. The location is definitely one of the best things about this hotel—it’s very convenient and close to the MTR, restaurants, shops, and many places to explore around Tsim Sha Tsui. It made getting around Hong Kong so much easier. The room was comfortable and had everything we needed for our stay. The staff were also helpful and accommodating. Tsim Sha Tsui Hong Kong|1.85km from downtown
My stay at B P International in Hong Kong was, overall, a very pleasant experience. The hotel's biggest advantage is its excellent location; it's incredibly convenient for getting to Tsim Sha Tsui, West Kowloon, or Jordan. And for the price, it really felt like I was getting a lot of bang for my buck. The biggest surprise was that my room even had a view of Victoria Harbour – it was especially beautiful at night, making it truly great value for money. The hotel itself does show its age a bit, and the facilities aren't exactly cutting-edge. However, the room was actually very comfortable to stay in. The bed, air conditioning, and everything else were perfectly fine. Especially given Hong Kong's warm weather, the AC in the room was very powerful, which I really appreciated. The overall cleanliness and comfort were also good; despite the hotel being a bit older, it didn't feel unpleasant to stay in. The only slight drawback was that not all disposable toiletries were provided for free. So, if you're planning to stay here, it's best to bring your own toothbrush and toothpaste. This is quite common in many Hong Kong hotels now due to restrictions on single-use plastics. I also have to give a special shout-out to the front desk staff. Their service was incredibly enthusiastic, always willing to help with any issues, and their attitude was excellent – it really enhanced the entire check-in experience. Overall, while the facilities are a minor weak point, the location, view, comfort, service, and value for money are all exceptional. If I visit Hong Kong again, especially if I want to stay in the Tsim Sha Tsui/West Kowloon area, I would definitely consider staying here again.

The location is impeccable, with the subway station and a shopping mall right downstairs, making travel extremely convenient. The two large beds are spacious enough for anyone to toss and turn freely. However, the room facilities are noticeably outdated, and all the finishing details are quite poor, which really doesn't live up to a five-star standard. From the corners of the walls to the floor seals in the shower, toilet, and bathtub, everything is very rough and feels haphazardly done. Additionally, the room and its surroundings are very humid; upon entering, there's a noticeable musty smell. Although there are several dehumidifiers on each floor, they don't seem to be quite enough.

Pros: During the peak summer season, the price is quite good value for money, and they offer family triple rooms. If you want to experience authentic Hong Kong local life, you can book this hotel. There are also many local eateries nearby. The room space is quite large, and there's a sink right by the entrance, which is convenient for washing things. The bay window provides good natural light. In terms of transportation, both buses and the MTR are conveniently located within 500 meters, making it quick to get to the Yau Tsim Mong area. There are also tram terminals and the Chun Yeung Street tram stop nearby. Food deliveries are left directly on the counter at the hotel lobby's group reception. Staff will ask for verification when you pick up your order, so they do a good job with security. Cons: There are many seafood shops around the hotel, so it's inevitable that the hotel lobby, both inside and out, smells of seafood. However, the smell disappears once you go upstairs. The bathroom is quite small, making showering a bit cramped. The room does not provide drinking water or toiletries like toothbrushes (I looked it up, and Hong Kong has a plastic restriction policy). The tissues are also just toilet rolls.

Traveling from Xiamen to Hong Kong, it seems that due to environmental protection policies, hotels in Hong Kong no longer provide disposable toothbrushes and toothpaste. This hotel is conveniently located next to Prince Edward MTR Station, making transportation easy. There are also many shops nearby, which is great for shopping. The room was larger than expected; we, a family of three, chose a king-sized bed (1.8m), and the movable sofa could be used as a barrier next to it. Overall, it was quiet, but when actually sleeping, the air conditioner seemed a bit loud – something that could be improved. There were earplugs in the room, but I wasn't sure if they were complimentary since it wasn't specified, so I didn't use them. A universal adapter was provided. It would be even better if disposable slippers were offered for children. Check-in is after 3 PM; before that, you can only store your luggage. It would be nice if early check-in or a later check-out around 2 or 3 PM were possible. The hotel staff were very friendly and patient, and could communicate in Mandarin. Finally, I recommend a dim sum place near the hotel called 'Hot Spot Dim Sum' (热点点心); the prices are reasonable, and the food is delicious.

Location: Approximately 160m from Tsim Sha Tsui East Station and 540m from Tsim Sha Tsui Station. It's very convenient to walk to the Avenue of Stars, K11 MUSEA, Harbour City, and the Star Ferry. Room: Considered a ”large room” in Hong Kong, with standard rooms around 40sqm+. Some rooms offer Victoria Harbour views or partial sea views. However, the hotel is a bit older, and the decor leans towards a classic, established style. Service: Shangri-La-style service is a major plus – the bell staff proactively handles luggage, and there's turndown service. Suitable for: First-time visitors to Hong Kong, those who want to explore Tsim Sha Tsui's dining and shopping scene and see Victoria Harbour, travelers with elderly family members or children, and those who prioritize ”location + service + space” over brand-new decor. The room was a bit old-fashioned, and there were only two power outlets. Luckily, I brought a couple of multi-port adapters, otherwise charging my phone and camera would have been a hassle. No bottled water was provided in the room, only tap water. While it's eco-friendly, it's not very convenient and detracted from the experience. The hotel's surroundings are excellent. There are many bars and restaurants downstairs, and a Wellcome Supermarket and 7-Eleven nearby. The bus stop is right in front of the hotel, making it very convenient to get to Central and the West Kowloon Cultural Corridor. Just a heads-up, the MTR station is quite a distance, so it might not be convenient if you have a lot of luggage. I'd like to praise the front desk service. On my first night, I was on the 4th floor, and the 3rd floor was the swimming pool. The room was incredibly damp. When I woke up in the morning, I had two bites, probably from some insect. After I reported it to the front desk, they immediately moved me to a room on the 16th floor for the remaining two days! Oh, and the hotel breakfast was decent. However, getting the room took far too long; I didn't get it until 5:30 PM. The air conditioning system stopped working in the morning, and it took 30 minutes for the technician to arrive for repairs, which was a bit slow. The swimming pool was clean. For the main pool, children are required to wear life jackets, which is quite inconvenient for kids who already know how to swim, regardless of their age. Please consider changing this rule. The room was advertised as 13 square meters, but it felt even smaller. The cleanliness was significantly worse than Hanting hotels on the mainland. The room was damp and had an unpleasant odor, and the air conditioning was too noisy. It's considered a cheap four-star hotel in Hong Kong, and now I understand why. The room was too small, the hallway was narrow, and any noise made it hard to sleep. I didn't dare use the towels, and the bedsheets and duvet covers were very old. I stayed here for 5 days and 4 nights because I heard it had good access to Hong Kong Disneyland. There wasn't much difference in price between a taxi and the train from the airport to the hotel, so I took a taxi. The room was simple, and the amenities were truly minimal (just a toothbrush and slippers), but since I only needed a place to sleep, I was satisfied. The slippers were quite thin and flimsy, so I recommend bringing your own if that bothers you. I also stayed at the end of August, but the room was quite cold; it was chilly even with the air conditioning off, so I suggest bringing a jacket or cardigan. There were two rolls of toilet paper, but once one ran out, it wasn't replaced. Hand towels and bath towels were replenished daily. I could hear some noise from the adjacent room, but there are a lot of international guests, so I guess that's to be expected given the clientele. The building where the hotel is located has a supermarket and many Japanese restaurants, so you won't have trouble finding food. I only noticed it later, so I couldn't use it, but there was information in the room drawer about discounts available at Aeon (apparently, you just need to show your room key). The access to Disneyland was good, and for about 10,000 yen per day for two people, I was satisfied with the price as well.

Pros: 1. **Hygiene:** Overall, the hygiene was quite good. I was worried about bed bugs before coming to Hong Kong, but I didn't encounter any at this hotel. Plus, the room had tile flooring instead of carpet, which I really appreciated. While many hotels use carpet for aesthetics, it tends to hide dirt and is harder to clean, so the tiles were a big plus! 2. **Dining:** The breakfast was quite varied, and the dumplings were delicious. There were also plenty of options for kids. 3. **Service:** I mentioned at the front desk that I had a child with me, and they kindly upgraded our room type, which was very spacious. 4. **Location:** The transportation was convenient. We could walk to the MTR station, bus stops, tram stops, and shopping malls. Cons: 1. **Hygiene Details:** There's still room for improvement in hygiene details, for example, there was quite a bit of dust on the light switches. 2. **Noise:** In the middle of the night, we could clearly hear the extremely loud slamming of doors from the adjacent room, which scared us and kept us from sleeping well.

I had a 14-hour layover between flights and chose this hotel. If you're just looking for a place to sleep, it's a great hotel that's compact and offers excellent value for money. They do have a shuttle bus, but in the evening, it only runs every 30 minutes, so walking is definitely faster and more reliable. The route to the hotel is covered, so you don't have to worry about the weather, even on rainy days, and you can get there smoothly.

+852 Country Code: Is It an Area Code?

+852 is Hong Kong's country code, not an area code. Hong Kong scrapped area codes back in 1989, so Central, Kowloon, the New Territories and Lantau all share +852, and there's nothing extra to dial between the country code and the eight-digit number.

Is +852 China’s Country Code?

+852 is Hong Kong only. Mainland China uses +86 and Macau uses +853, and calls between them count as international, which does catch a lot of travellers out.

For example, if you’re using a Hong Kong SIM and want to call a hotel in Shenzhen, you'll need the +86 code first, and the same goes for +853 if you want to call somewhere in Macau.

What Does a "+" on an Incoming Call Mean?

Once you have a Hong Kong SIM, any incoming call from outside Hong Kong shows a "+" in front of the caller's number. If you’re getting a local call, they display as plain eight-digit phone numbers.

How to Call Hong Kong from Australia

From your Aussie mobile, first dial +852 and then punch in the eight-digit Hong Kong number.

From a landline, first dial 0011, then 852, and then the eight-digit Hong Kong number.

For example, to reach the Hong Kong Tourism Board’s visitor hotline:

  • Australian mobile: +852 2508 1234
  • Australian landline: 0011 852 2508 1234

Before you go calling Hong Kong though, make sure to check your phone plan’s international-call allowance. Using your Australian SIM card to call Hong Kong from home and to call a number within Hong Kong are also different; the latter involves international roaming, which isn’t automatically covered if you have an international calling pack.

If you’ve got a Hong Kong SIM or eSIM installed for a trip to Hong Kong, you can call numbers after you arrive (as long as your chosen plan includes calls and not just data). You won’t have to input the country code, you can just dial the eight numbers.

Do You Need a Hong Kong Phone Number for Your Trip?

No, you don’t need a local Hong Kong phone number for a typical holiday in Hong Kong. If you’re mainly after maps, translation tools, online bookings and messages or calls through WhatsApp, a data-only eSIM or a suitable Australian roaming plan will cover those needs.

The important thing to note is that you can keep using WhatsApp with your Aussie number while your Hong Kong eSIM supplies the data.

A local +852 number becomes useful if you’re expecting to make regular calls to restaurants or hotel landlines, you want businesses to call you back locally, or you need a particular service that requires a Hong Kong number for SMS verification.

Staying Connected with a Data-Only eSIM

Trip.com’s Hong Kong eSIMs are data-only and do not come with a phone number. You can use the data for maps, email, browsing and calls or messages through apps such as WhatsApp. The plan does not provide ordinary voice calls or SMS, so it won’t let you dial a restaurant’s landline or receive verification texts on a new +852 number.

If those internet features cover what you need, explore Trip.com's Hong Kong eSIM Guide to compare data options for your trip. You can also keep your Australian line alongside a travel eSIM on a compatible dual-SIM phone; calls and texts on that line remain subject to your Australian provider’s overseas service and charges.

How to Get a Hong Kong Phone Number

If you decide you do need a Hong Kong mobile number, look for a prepaid SIM or eSIM from a local telecom provider that explicitly includes one.

When purchasing, you’ll want to find out what kind of call allowance it has (i.e. how many minutes?) and whether SMS is also included.

Buying a Local Prepaid SIM

A physical SIM is an option if your phone does not support eSIM, or you would prefer help from a shop. However, you will need to make sure your phone is unlocked.

For me, the easiest option for a physical SIM card is the 5G Discover Hong Kong Tourist Sim card. It’s built for travellers, giving you a local number to make calls, and some data for browsing and using your apps. You can pick it up after you arrive at csl shops, 1O1O Centres, and participating 7-Eleven and Circle K stores.

Your other option is to buy a SIM from a staffed telecom shop. To do so, you’ll need to bring your passport, and it can be a bit more time consuming than simply picking up the tourist SIM.

Can You Get a Hong Kong eSIM with a Phone Number?

Yes, some local providers offer Hong Kong eSIMs with a phone number and calls included. For example, csl sells an eSIM version of its Discover Hong Kong Tourist SIM, including a seven-day option with local voice calls. You’ll need a compatible, unlocked phone and must complete real-name registration before using the service.

Can You Keep Your Australian Number with a Hong Kong eSIM?

Yes, if your phone supports the required dual-SIM setup. You can retain your Australian line and add a travel SIM or eSIM. Device support varies by model and where it was purchased.

If you’ve set up an eSIM before travelling, you’ll want to make sure the settings are changed as you land. Decide which line will handle the mobile data (your eSIM), and which line will handle calls and texts (your Australian number).

Here’s a walkthrough:

  • Label the lines clearly, such as “Australia” and “Hong Kong”.
  • Select your travel plan for mobile data.
  • Turn off data roaming on the Australian line if you do not intend to use its roaming data.
  • Follow the travel provider’s instructions for roaming on the travel line; some travel eSIMs require it to be enabled.
  • Check your Australian provider’s rules for receiving SMS and calls overseas.

Hi, I'm James, an Australian travel writer based in Europe. Years of trips across Asia, Europe, the US and back home in Australia have taught me that good travel comes down to having the right information beforehand: knowing the details of transfers and public transport, which queue to skip, what's worth it and what's not. I'm bringing all that knowledge and research to my travel guides for Trip.com so you can spend less time working it out and more time enjoying your trip.
