📍 231 Canongate, Edinburgh
★★★★ 8.9 (256 reviews)

"We stayed in an apartment, was really happy until we got back to our room at 10.30pm to a freezing cold room. No heating! And it’s was at least -3 outside. Rang down to reception to be told they would reset the heating?! After 30 min I rang again and let them know that hadn’t worked, they sent up some extra blankets at 11.30pm. Not really acceptable, as we were cold all night and morning and It really spoilt the experience and being out in the cold all day to then come back to a cold flat wasn’t very nice. I spoke to the manager in the morning who offered to refunded the cost of our breakfast and apologised and said there was nothing they could do as there is no maintenance on weekends ?! Not good enough really. Wouldn’t recommend."

Destiny Student - Holyrood (Brae House)

Destiny Student - Holyrood (Brae House)

📍 Brae House, 31 Abbeyhill, Edinburgh
★★★★ 8.2 (117 reviews)

"We needed somewhere central to explore the fringe festival that didn't break the bank, this ticked all the boxes! The 24hr reception was a godsend, so we got there early doors & put our bags in reception for a fiver & didn't check in until midnight so that we didn't miss any planned shows having to come back & check in at 3pm. Student dig rooms so obviously not too spacious, but suited us fine, only complaint would be the heat, extremely warm in the room, but leaving the window open means you here the trains all night so not ideal.Fans were available to hire at reception though in case our become too much, which or didn't for us thankfully."

"The room was excellent, very new. The location was superb, within walking distance of all Edinburgh attractions. It was also very close to the train station. While within walking distance of the attractions, it wasn't too crowded or noisy; there was a supermarket and shopping mall within 200 meters. A very good experience."

"Great hotel in a fabulous location. Only a minute's walk to the well photographed picturesque Victoria Street and then a little bit further to the castle. The Grassmarket area is lively with bars and eateries and had a market on while we were there at the weekend. The hotel is very clean and well presented. The breakfast was amazing and had beautiful views out to the castle. The staff are all very helpful. Rooms are comfortable and warm. It didn't have a bar or restaurant, but it's sister hotel just 10 seconds walk away, had both these and a pool which guests could use. I highly recommend the hotel."

"Loved this hotel. They offered free early check in at 10am if we register as Accor member. Thats really helpful and we appreciate it. Not the biggest aparthotel we had during this trip but its enough for three people. They have kitchenette and everything for cooking. free laundry detergent but the washer and dryer are payable."

"Hotel was university dorm rooms. Small but comfortable and had toilet and shower. There is a shared kitchen (shared between ~6 rooms). Walls were thin which is a problem if neighbours are noisy. Location is decent, plenty of restaurants and pubs within walking distance. Overall it's an ok place to stay, not cheap but not bad value compared to other places in the city. Note that hotel charges £5 per bag if you want to leave things behind the counter until check in time."

Holiday Inn Express EDINBURGH - LEITH WATERFRONT by IHG ★★★
"Location: Very conveniently located right across a couple of bus stops and also a few steps away from Ocean Terminal tram stop. The Oean Terminal has a few well known brand outlets which we did not visit but if you have nothing else to do, it could be a nice way to spend your time. Also the Royal Britannia Yacht is right there. Cleanliness and facilities: just as expected from IHG, very clean and also the facilities that we wanted: luggage storage, a simple bar/ restaurant and hot breakfast. Nothing extraordinary but absolutely essential. Note: scrambled eggs could be better. Service: OK, as expected. We had already sent a note saying we were going to arrive between 1 AM and 1:30 AM, and when we came to the reception around 1:15 AM, they promptly delivered the keys and on the inside of the card was written "no show". Which means the reception doing the night shift never saw our note and had already marked us as possible "no show". It did not hurt us, but I did not like the fact they never read our note, it shows the impersonal nature of their service. Therefore I deducted one star. Note: The cranberry tea is a nice selection. It helped my headache. Thanks."
